Not really except you'd have to run a higher FSB to keep the CPU speed up.

That, and also it means that you need better RAM (especially if you're overclocking), since the slowest RAM divider you can select is 1:1, meaning if you use a 7x multiplier and clock your chip at 2.8 GHz, the slowest you can run your RAM at is DDR2-800, meaning you either need modules rated for that speed, or DDR2-667 modules that can overclock to that speed. If you want to go higher than that at a 7x multiplier, then you need either DDR2-1000 modules, or overclockable DDR2-800 modules.

I'm actually hoping to be able to do 7x500 on my P5B, once a new BIOS revision makes it stable at that FSB setting. At the moment though my board is topping out at about 450 MHz on the FSB.

P5B vanilla? What chip? I just got a vanilla P5B and an E6600 is on the way

P5B Deluxe/Wifi, with the E6600. The multiplier on my chip is unlocked downwards in the 507 BIOS, so I can set 9x, 8x, 7x, or 6x. Like many people, my board is not stable with FSB settings between about 320 and 380 MHz. I am currently running 425x8, for 3.4 GHz on the CPU, and DDR2-850 on the RAM. The CPU is stable at 3.5 GHz too, and the RAM is good to DDR2-1000, but the board starts to become unstable if I take the FSB above about 430 or so (even if I set the multiplier down to 6x). So for now I'm at 3.4 GHz/DDR2-850, but I'm hoping a future BIOS revision will net me 7x500 for 3.5 GHz/DDR2-1000.

Try 1.4vcore
400Mhz FSb
1.9v memory
1:1 ratio
add .5 to all the voltages you can adjust other than the 2 I mentioned above.
You will run 3.2Ghz on your CPU (assuming you didn't change the multiplyer). I'm hard pressed to find someone unable to run their 6400 at this speed.

You said you went to 425 stable so far, but if you lose stability go to 400Mhz and move up from there. Or you can add voltage to the CPU and see if it becomes stable.

I seem to be having problems with memory. How do you set it in jumperless config? I set it to auto and on bootup it says PC-4300. When I set it to ddr800 or ddr850 (I'm trying 400-445 atm), it doesn't even post, with memory at 2 volts. I'm using corsair twin2 5-5-5-12 ddr800. It won't post if I try and manually overide SPD settings, and SPD settings are like bad, 6/6/6/18/34 or something.

Currently I'm at 445 FSB but with a X7 multi. It will run 3dmark06 at X8, but isn't prime stable. Unfortunately 445 X 7 doesn't seem to be prime overnight stable, albeit it ran fine for a couple of hours.

What are default values for north/south/ICH, and what's safe to take them to?

Thanks!

I am having similar issues my configuration. I was able to be stable running two instances of Prime95 and Orthos at the same time for about 10 hrs with the cpu temperature reaching about 50C. My setting is the following:
7*428=2996MHz
DDR2-800 XMS2-6400 5-5-5-12 @ DDR-856 with 2.0v

Stability is very important for me since this is my everyday use computer; do I need to run two instances of Prime95 for two hrs to be considered stable?

Any help will be appreciated

well I just changed to an E6600 and got even weirder stuff than I did before.
The cpu/memory at stock is 266/533 ok in windows that reports 1:1

at 300 freq the memory in bios says 833. WT hell and it shows 1:1 in windows
at 333 freq the memory in bios says 966. in windows it shows 1:1
at 350 cpu freq the memory in bios says 11XX( its over 1100 something I forgot to write it down)where the hell is it getting these memory multipliers for 1:1 ratio???

IF I lock the memory to 800 in the bios,,, in windows I get 2:3

now if 400 cpu should be 800 memory timings for 1:1 why is the bios setting the multipliers sooo damn high

MAN is it me or is this bios a dud?

thanks for any thoughts on this it doesn't make any since to me

I am thinking about getting this motherboard after having the worst possible time with the p5w dh and my drives being forced into PIO mode.

What i want to know is has anyone using the p5b had these PIO issues?

Ok. Well I've tried setting FSB to 400 on a P5B, machine doesn't boot up at all.
Pushed Vcore to 1.4175v as well as RAM to 2.0V, disabled Spread Spectrum and nada that wouldn't work.
Looks like I did a mistake trying to save some pennies not going for the P5B deluxe

Regular P5B also completely passively cooled AND heatsinks on it or not?!:

The P5B Deluxe is completely passively cooled and also has some kind of copper heatsinks to take aways heat.

Can anybody please tell with certainty whether the regular P5B is also completely passively cooled AND if it also has those copper heatsinks or not.

The picture of the mobo on the Asus site is too small to see it and they don't mention any of the above, even not that it is passively cooled!! If they do place fans on it, how many can there maximum be on the mobo cause I've heard that mobos can have multiple fans.

Also, do those heatsinks make alot of difference or can you use a silent Zalman cooler also if it doesn't have those heatsinks. What's the reason for the heatsinks? Are those chipsets exceptionally hot or something?

NOTE: if people speak about the "vanilla" P5B, are they reffering to the regular P5B or is that a special board or something?

Vanilla = regular, non-Deluxe P5B.

The vanilla P5B just has a standard passive heatsink on the NB and no heatpipe or fan. The Deluxe has a heatpipe (no fan) that cools it a bit better, but you can add a cheap, quiet 50mm fan to the vanilla P5B's NB.

Some additional questions I hope somebody can help me with:

1/ Does the regular P5B also have that "8 Phase Power Design" which the Deluxe has or not?!

Does that make alot of a difference in heat or does a silent Zalman (or other brand) cooler provide enough cooling anyway.

2/ Aside from the passive heatsink on the northbridge, is there no fan anywhere else on the regular P5B, like is it completely silent?!

Does it have passive heatsinks on other places, like Southbridge? I believe sometimes mobos have fans on other places also and don't have passive heatsinks everywhere like on the more expensive mobos, therefore I am asking.

3/ Does the regular P5B let you read and monitor the temperature of your CPU or not?! How do you do this?! (is some kind of software included with which you can do this?..). Is it true that the Intel 965 mobo doesn't have the possibility to monitor CPU temp?!

Thanks to anybody who can help with above questions!!

1.) The non-deluxe P5B does not have 8-Phase power. I can't see why it would make a difference in heat output. But for overclocking, 8-Phase power is more stable.

2.) No fans exist on the vanilla P5B. The passive heatsink on the northbridge is fairly large and there is a much smaller one on the southbridge. Both do get very hot under heavy load.

3.) The P5B comes with temp monitoring software: ASUS Probe 2 and Ai Suite. These, however, aren't very accurate. Core Temp is one program I use to monitor the temp of both cores.

I've had a chat with some guy from the xtremesystems.org forums and I've asked him what to do to overclock a E6600 + P5B non deluxe and from what I gather what I need to do is set multiplier to 8x and then push FSB to 380+ and see if it works.

My setup :
P5B non deluxe
Core 2 Duo E6600
Aerocool GT-1000
2x 1GB Crucial PC6400 (no SPD and using 4-4-4-12)
Zalman 460W PSU

When I boot with FSB > 330 and x9 multiplier using latest bios my machine will crash straight away after power up, I pushed CPU vcore up to 1.5v to no avail.
So far the maximum stable speed I've managed to get is 2.97ghz using x9 multiplier which is 330 FSB.

I was wondering if my problem was due to the Aerocool GT1000 but because the machine crashes straigth away I think this is not my problem..

Any insights ?

Cheers

Can anyone get onto the Asus FTP site? I've heard they have a newer soundmax driver on there. Could someone post the link for me if they can get on?

Anyone else having issues with the P5B Deluxe and Logitech Z-640's?

Are there any issues with the IDE port on this board, does it recognize PATA drives right off the bat?

Im asking because with my P5W whenever i plugged anything into the Jmicron IDE port it needed to recognize the drives, and wouldnt boot into windows after multiple restarts. As well will my dvd and dvdrw drives be properly recognized as IDE drives, because with the p5w they would be recognized as SCSI drives in device manager.

Thanks.

I haven't had any issues with the IDE port. I think there is an issue if you install the Jmicron PATA controller drivers. Check to make sure all IDE controllers are running in DMA mode in device manager.

Thats what im wondering, because with my P5W once i installed the jmicron raid controller i got alot of problems. So if i hook up my dvd drives to the IDE port, and just let windows use its generic PATA drivers everything will be good?
