Andytaro, i'm having the exact same problem. Have you been able to solve this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Just use the standard 4-pin ATX12V connector (providing no less than 13 A for Pentium 4/EE and no less than 16 A for Pentium D/EE). The 8-pin connector may be required for future processors, 4-pin (peripheral) additional connector in case of a PSU with a 20-pin connector (mandatory for SLI mode)

About 2 weeks ago I excited ordered the parts I thought would make a great, overclockable, and quiet Conroe system:
- Asus P5B Deluxe/WiFi
- E6400 processor
- Zalman 7700 cooler
- Seasonic 430W PSU
- GeForce 7600GS (silent and helpfully limits my gaming
- 2 x 1GB RAM AmpX/Wintec 5400
- Antec Solo case
- Sony DDU1615 DVD Drive (quiet DVD reader)
- Pioneer DVD+-R/RAM
- Existing 250 GB PATA Seagate drive
- New 320 GB SATA Seagate Drive

** Step 1

When I (finally!) received all the parts from Newegg, I put them together. Everything seemed to power on, all fans running, MB LED are lighted, but otherwise nothing happened, no POST, no nothing. I checked and rechecked that all the connections were secure, etc. without success. Although my monitor has always worked, I tried the D-sub cables and tried another known working monitor in case it was a display problem. No dice.

I called Newegg and ultimately Asus to investigate. I figured the RAM or the MB would be the problem. The Asus tech had me clear the CMOS (battery removal plus jumper reset), remove the RAM, then the CPU. I do not have a PC speaker in my case, so he had me plug my computer speakers into the sound output on the motherboard. Even without RAM and/or CPU the MB did not produce beeps. BUT, I wasn't (and am still not) totally sure if the MB would beep without a PC Speaker. The Asus tech concluded that the MB was dead so I RMA'd it back.

** Step 2

After waiting many anxious days I received my replacement P5B Deluxe/WiFi and I figured the problem would likely be resolved. With great anticipation I turned it on..... no such luck: no POST, no beeps when RAM removed, etc. Everything appears to power up just as before, but nothing else. All connections and basic things seem ok.

** Step 3

I figured at this point that it was almost certainly the RAM, since many people seem to be having RAM compatibility problems and this would prevent POST. Today I picked up for testing 1 GB of Kingston RAM KVR533D2 that is on Asus' list of QVL RAM for the P5B Deluxe MB. I picked up some Corsair value RAM 1 GB for good measure. I tried testing with each of these RAM DIMM's, Kingston, then Corsair, then my original AmpX/Wintec and still no POST in any scenario. At the same time I picked up an ATI X1300 just in case the video card was the problem. Still, no POST.

** Step 4

The system at this point is just the Monitor, Case, PSU, MB, CPU and fan, and Video card. Since I'd replaced everything other than the CPU, I just picked up a new CPU, the same model E6400. Again, no POST, no nothing other than powering on.

I've had the PSU running with my old system (Athlong 1.33 GHz - old I know), so I don't think that's a problem, besides everything seems powered in the system. The monitor I know works. The case does nothing functional, and every other component I've replaced. Yet, the system still will not POST.

The only thing I can think of is that the case is shorting something so I will try building the system outside of the case, but if that doesn't work, what do you all recommend? Is anyone else having this hard a time? I am seriously frustrated and not sure what to do next. Thanks for any help/advice!!

Place the board on top of the mylar shipping bag and then place that on top of the box and try booting the system. Ensure you have the cleared the CMOS and properly inserted the 24-pin and 8-pin ATX power connectors. Let us know what happens next.

Gary Key -- thank you so much. I am embarrassed to say I am such an f'ing idiot! 8-pin ATX connector?????? I didn't know there was such a thing and certainly had not plugged it in. God I wish I had realized that a week ago before I had done so much work. Now it is POSTing. I will plug everything else (e.g. HDD's) in and see if it works. THANK YOU!

Actually if you look at server boards that have 2 CPU sockets it's an 8pin EPS plug that provides the 12v power to each CPU. I've read that Intel specifies the EPS plug for C2D to provide power for each core. Although it's not necessary to run, I feel it's better to use it if you can.

Even though you made an error, isn't it a GREAT feeling when things finally start working and the board posts??

That 4or 8-pin ATX power connector is a show stopper at times, wonder how I would know that.....

After running the board for over a week I am overall happy with it!

It has run stable for me, the temps all seem fine too. (I don't overclock, at least not yet).

The only main issue I have with it is the onboard sound:

I have surround sound which I run through the analog outs for the front and rear speakers, after driver issues to get them running properly (relative term) I found that while playing Oblivion the sound was kind of muffled, and I got clicks and other minor but annoying corruption of the sound.
I hooked my system up at my friends place and used the optical digital out, and found the sound was alot better and free of those issues, so I am wondering if something is not quite right with its analogue outs for surround sound.

I gave up and got a Creative X-Fi soundcard, and my sound has been fine since

Isn't there some updated drivers for the onboard sound that fix those problems? I thought I saw them earlier in this thread.

I'm spec'ing out parts for a system build using the P5B Deluxe, and wondering if my existing power supply will work ok. It's an Antec Truepower 430 (classic, not 2.0).

Reviews-

I plan to get the E6400 and overclock a bit, but will NOT be running any SLI or Crossfire. So, am I safe to stick with this psu, or should I spring the extra $$ for something beefier?

Thanks,
M

Personally, I would spring for something more. Of course my opinion is a bit biased concidering my last system was hosed by a bad PSU (Fortron 400W). Also if you are OC'ing, that extra juice wouldn't hurt. In the end its up to you.

Keep in mind that the power consumption of the Core2 chips is supposed to be 30-40% less than the Pentium 4 chips. So I would think that a power supply in the 400w range would be fine. I'm running a 400w Liberty with the system listed in my sig (4 Hard drives! ) and have had no problems. I've overclocked a little (upped it to a 2.7ghz) and I'm still stable.

As for brand, I can't help too much. I tend to stay with Enermax.

I agree, because it is the video cards that requires the most power, and even with a single card it is better to have a bit more. For example, for a single Radeon X1900 card, ATI recommends at least "450-Watt capacity and 30A current on 12V rail"

You mean p5b vanilla won't recognize your IDE DVD drive?
If so, I've RMAed to newegg and picked up p5b deluxe which solved my problem.
I strongly recommend to get another board.

Yeah there are the 4570 drivers which I tried initially and the sound was outright hopeless the volume was messed up for surround sound on the analogue outs. Someone suggested going back to an earlier driver the 4530 which I did, and that was a huge improvement, however several sounds were coming out a bit quiet and kind of muffled, along with crackles and clicks at times.
This has been my experience with it anyway, I'm guessing most people will be using surround sound through the digital connection and wont experience these problems?? (I didn't have a problem with the digital out when I tried it at a mates)

aaarrrrrrrggggggghhhh!!

I cant figure out how to setup a RAID 1 fresh XP pro install?!

1. I started the BIOS setup, and went to the IDE menu and set the Sata RAID stuff
2. I reboot, and press <CTRL+I> and go to the Intel Matrix menu andc create a RAID 1 volume.
3. Reboot again, and I'm trying to let windows setup do an install, but it's just treating the drives as IDE

can someone tell me what the steps are???? PLEASE!!!

Out of curiosity, what is your sound configuration? Mine was analogue front and rear channels, so I had the speaker setup as Quadraphonic via that speaker wizard.

Hi All,

when i placed the 2X1GB OCZ PC6400 memory module in slot 1/3 or 2/4, Memtest86 give errors. But if i test them separately on Slot 1, they do fine.

Also my AI NOS hang every time when it asks me to reboot. The program hang, but window is OK.

is something wrong with my board?

Thanks

Alright, well I bought a brand new system this week.

Here is my config:

Core 2 Duo E6400 with Stock Cooler
Asus P5B Vanilla
Corsair Twin2X 2048 6400C4 2GB kit
With BFG 7600GT
with an OCZ ModStream 450W powersupply

My current results are quite nice, I'm able to run 8x410(3.28Ghz) on the P5B with 509 BIOS. I'm currently trying to run 2x Prime95, but maybe I'm doing something wrong but it won't go 100% no matter how I change the affinity (0 or 1) on either instances . My temps are pretty decent at 47 degrees idle, and 57 Max load.

Just a Note: I had OCZs 2 GB PC6400 Kit and was getting Prime95 and Memtest errors even at stock settings (non-overclocked) on the newest BIOS. I switched to Corsairs..

Anybody using bios v.0614 yet? I upgraded from 0302 to the 0614 version when I got my board assembled recenntly. The problem I am trying to cure is the compatability of my Corsair cm2x512a-6400, which is listed on the QVL. The BIOS detects the size(2x512) correctly, but no way will the system boot any kind of operating system.
(see thread here).

Has anyone tried this RAM with the P5B vanilla?

http://labs.anandtech.com/alllinks.php?pfilter=3034
Crucial PC-6400 2x1024mb Ballistix

There is one report on a newegg.com review that it works with the p5b deluxe once you manually set the RAM voltage to 2.2v in the bios. But I wanted to check here with you folks. It's currently $189 AR, which is quite a bit cheaper than the best Corsair price I've seen for a comparable stick.

There is a Crucial stick on ASUS's QVL (http://usa.asus.com/100/download/products/1295/1295_10.pdf), but it's a different part number...

Thanks!
-B

Edit: Just realized it's out of stock, and the rebate is only good through Monday. So it's unlikely to be of much value anymore, unless newegg gets more in somehow or they do another round of the rebate. Ah well. These RAM prices are killing me.
