I am using a new Conroe E6600,Corsair XMS2 800 ddr2(2x1 gig sticks),EVGA 7900 GT,Enermax Liberty PS, all in an aluminum Thermaltake Armor JR. case.

I'e tried everything i can think of, including a regular P4 640 and some older ddr2 533mz ram i had in my old machine and that made no difference whatsover.

Has anyone had a similar expirience or maybe have any advice on a possible solution?

Asus tech support was no help and didn't ofer anything beyond what i have already tried.

I have the exact same motherboard, CPU, and RAM with the exact same problem. I'm using a Radeon x1900xt and an Ultra 600w PSU. Nothing I've tried worked either. Thought it might be an older BIOS version that doesn't work with Core 2 so I ordered a cheap Celeron to try, but since you tried a different CPU, maybe it is the board itself. If this Celeron doesn't work I might RMA the mainboard after trying a couple more final things.

I tried installing the Celeron CPU, and still had the same problem. Since everything I've tried comes up with the same result, I think it is the board itself that is the problem, so I packed up the board and am going to RMA it.

Update on my situation:
Got the replacement board today, hooked everything up, with the Celeron first. It booted right up. So I'll put in the E6600 later and hopefully that'll work too. (It did)

The board doesn't let me put my ram to the right settings It keeps knocking up the memory timings to 5-3-3-15 instead of 3-3-3-12 like how it should be. I hope their new bios will make the board really good, maybe they will add in memory timings to their bios too. I idle at 42C and load at 55C with the stock intel hsf. Is that normal?

That's weird. I idle at 36c most of the time with my 6600 and the same fan. What thermal paste did you use?

AS5 like every other geek in here. There have been multiple threads about the temp readings. AFAIK, people could not figure out if it was the chip or the board that was the problem.

Problem being that it's reading the temp wrong? or problem being that it's overheating?

Because if it's just a wrong reading, then it's not THAT big a deal.

I see so many people getting temps in the high 30s and low 40s??? What kind of cooling are you using? I havent been able to get less than 50 c using stock or aftermarket. Right now I am using a Coolermaster Vortex TX and I still get 50s at idle. I am using artic silver 5 too. is there a better HS/Fan out there I should be using?

I have checked my temps using PC Probe and TaT. They both show 58 c under no load.

This is a new build with a brand new P5B but the CPU has been used on my DS3. I never used the stock HS|Fan on this board. When I had this chip on my DS3 with the stock HS|Fan I got temps in the 30s.

Cal,
I finally got around to running the HD Tach on my Raptor. It showed up with 123.7mb/s burst speed and around 8ms random access. I did the same test on a 7200 RPM Samsung SATA and got 118mb/s burst speed. Do these numbers seem consistent with SATA? Or is sometihng not quite right?

Yeah, I'd say those scores are about right. When you take the long test in HD Tach, you will get an option to 'Compare Another Drive'. Select that option and you can scroll down a list to see what other similar HDD's have been rated at. According to that list, a 36 GB WD Raptor comes in at around a 100mb/s in burst speed and 8.8ms random access. Your higher burst speed of 123.7mb/s and slightly better random access is likely due to the Core 2 E6600 from the CPU testing part of HD Tach, and possibly a newer model Raptor. So it looks like you're right were you should be there. I also checked the SATA Samsung HDD's at 7200 RPM that came close to 118mb/s and got the Samsung SpinPoint P 7200 RPM which came in with a burst of 121.3mb/s, so the 118mb/s isn't an unreasonable number to get at all, depending on the system it's running on of course.

Also, thanks for the tip about running my drive in AHCI mode. I had to do a reinstall of windows, but that was no problem as I had all my data on backup anyways. Got the driver loaded and my harddrive running in AHCI now. It increased my burst speed a little bit and now has the drive rated as operating in UDMA - 6 as opposed to 5.

I?m stuck on deciding for Ram with this board (p5b Deluxe\ E6400\cnps9500)

I noticed everyone here has got Corsair and has amazing results with it but

I can get OCZ 6400 Platinum REV2 4-4-4-15 2v with 2.2 EVP for 300$ Canadian
Or XMS2 6400 Black Spreaders 5-5-5-12 1.9 for 340
Or XMS2 6400 Pro Spreaders 5-5-5-12 1.9v for 400
Or XMS2 6400 Black spreaders 4-4-4-12 2.1v (with EPP) for 400

Which one should I get for Best OC results?
Unless the difference is huge vs. corsair and the OCZ. The OCZ is the best deal especially considering it has the EVP up to 2.2

But you tell me? Are there any better deals online that ship to Canada?
I?ve seen the OCZ gold on NCIX but I hate the GOLD series they have compatibility issues and high timings

Good to hear you got AHCI going! I did an install of Windows Vista on the Samsung HD and everything on the motherboard had native Vista drivers. The performance of Vista with my system is actually slightly more responsive than XP. May have been optimized for dual core...I don't know.

Hmmm.....I downloaded the floppy matrix app, in order to create the floppy driver data...When I start the matrix app, it says my system does not meet the minium system requirements. Any idea on how to create the floppy with the drivers I need for the F6 process?

The trouble is the system just seems really unstable in windows. Ive looked in the event viewer and it lists a huge number of errors about the cd drive and j micron. I know its a long shot but does anyone have any ideas whats wrong or should i just start taking out components until it stops crashing? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you updated to the latest BIOS? Not sure that would help, but its worth a shot. I do have a question for you though. Where do I find this "Event Viewer"?

What he means is the "Event Viewer" in Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Event Viewer>System

You basically see what kind of errors are halting the system, albiet very brief and not detailed but at least you know if it's unstable and what's causing it.

This sounds to me like the same problem I was having with the OCZ memory, even at stock settings I was having memory errors. Try running Prime95 or Memtest86 to confirm this problem. The P5Bs DH and Vanilla are known to have memory compatibility probslems. I switched to Corsair Twin2X PC2-6400s and now it's finally stable.

BTW, Does anyone know how to run Prime995 in 2 instances to create 100% CPU usage? I googled it and haven't found a solution despite running the command -a1
still gets 50% usage no matter what I do.....anyone?

I might have the same problem with my P5B (vanilla) and the OCZ PC2-6400 ram I'm using right now. The system keeps crashing (BSOD) in games at random. Actually, my problems were more severe when I first assembled the system. For some reason it wouldn't post because the default bios didn't see the 800MHz ram. The computer is new so the guys at the shop flashed it for me to the latest bios 0509. Then, my comp started to be very very unstable. It would crash in less than 2-5 minutes of use. The guys at the shop ran memtest86 and decided to change the memory sticks with new ones, of the same type obviously. But even so, now, when i run games on the rig I get ramdom crashes out of the blue. (ohh... the painful to watch BSOD).
So I took the comp back at the store to have a look at it again.

If nothing improves, I think I'll change te mobo to an Asus P5N32-SLI SE Deluxe (which is a shame cause I was going to wait for the new 590 chipset but I can't live with this mobo anymore). Or maybe I should change OCZ with Corsair and wait for the P5N32-SLI Premium release.

Cheers

These boards have had problems with the high speed OCZ modules. Switching to Corsair or Kingston would probably solve the issues.

Just got my P5B Deluxe 2 days ago, and yesterday I'd finally got some spare hours to get my HTPC up and running. I got this board for many reasons, one being the integrated gigabit ethernet controllers.

However, when installing the driver for the ethernet controller the installation program terminates with some obscur message telling me "failed to configure driver for installation".

I've tried both the driver on the CD (which by the way was barely readable on 3 different CD-ROM's - too bad Asus), as well as the newest driver from Asus web siste. Same result.

WTF ?
By the way - the OS is MS Media Center edition...

I went through the same problem with my p5b and OCZ pc2-6400. No posting. An easy way out is to try only one stick of your 6400 ram or even better to put in one stick of a slower ram (I used 533 Mhz). You will be able to post with that. Than you have to upgrade the bios to the newest version (the mobo manual has instructions how to upgrade bios). good luck

Which BIOS revision are you running? I've heard that a lot of boards were shipped with OLD bios revisions meaning that it has to be updated at the store or with a non-Core2 chip installed.

Just a note, my board shipped with a 302 BIOS and posted first time with an E6400.

Does anyone....anyone have an idea why the FSB is causing Windows to blow up?

Hi Darkryft, the pins he is refering to are the power supply 8 pin socket located near the cpu socket, it has a small black plastic tab covering 4 of the holes you can remove the plastic tab and place the 8 pin connector or 2 for 4 pin connector from your power supply into the holes.

One thing I noticed with the ram is that my system when it boots only shows it as pc 6400 ram, I thought it would say PC 8500, minor issue as it is running at 1066 anyway in the bios.

Another thing I noticed is that this board when you overclock it and you dont set a vcore voltage the bios chooses to run it higher then what is needed on my board, this is probably why I see people complaing about high temps set your own Voltage as low as you can. I have my E6600 runing on 1.25 volts @ 46 celcius. Bus speed 426. Before I manually set it the cpu temp was running 53 celcius and hitting 62 playing games. I havent tried raising the FSB past 426 as I only have the boxed heat sink and fan. Hope this helps some Good luck.

I'd steer clear of the asus p5b series. Too many folks having critical issues with these cards. the dq6 sounds good

Can you elaborate on this a bit? I'm in the midst of builing a machine with almost the same parts (p5b dlx, e6600, audigy2z).

Also, can anyone recommend what would be the best pci slot to run the Audigy card if my only other device is my pci-e vidcard (xfx 7950gt xtreme). How does the onboard audio compare to the Audigy?

Thanks,
M
