Harddrives not showing up in the BIOS and listing them on the second page of the POST probably means you set your SATA controller to AHCI. You need to have the AHCI drivers on a boot disk and hit F6 during install so windows can see them. If your SATA is set to IDE it will show your drives in the BIOS.

Hope this helps.

Just a question for those using Vista RC1, what program/utility do you use to monitor voltages and temperatures? I've got the P5B-Deluxe/WiFi edition, and the latest version of Speedfan appears to only monitory my HDD temperatures. No voltage readings or CPU/Mobo temps. Thanks in advance.

I'm planning on building my new system using this motherboard. But I've read in several articles this board has issues with several different types of memory. I'm planning on using Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400C4. Anyone know if this memory works well for this board?

Anybody running this board successfully with 4GB of memory?
If so, which BIOS version?

I'm using P5B Deluxe WIFI with 4x1GB G. Skill HZ CAS 4 memory, E6600... on 0711 bios revision.

The motherboard is showing 3008MB of memory instead of 4096.
Any ideas??

Only a 64 bit OS like XP64 will show more than 3GB of memory. Anything above that is ignored by a 32bit OS (or at least Windows XP Pro).

Right on... thanks fishy007.
What I'm most curious about it that the BIOS actually states 3008MB, before the OS has even booted.

I know I can add the /3GB switch to the bootloader to help with Windows XP Pro. I'm unclear about whether that will get me up to 4GB, or just 3GB.
I'm assuming from your post that it will only get me 3GB, which is fine, but this is also to be a Linux box (multi-boot), and probably a 64-bit distro (gentoo 64-bit).

Any ideas about the bios memory reporting? It seems like the BIOS should say the correct number (at least, it has on other motherboards I've tried, even if Windows only "sees" a smaller amount).

Thanks for the help,
- zevo

I have a P5B Deluxe purchased new last month. I've got an E6600 C2D with a Zalman S9500 HSF on it, idling temps are about 30-34 so heat's not an issue at all. I've flashed to the latest BIOS and checked everything over and over.

When I try to install Win XP SP2 clean on my 320gb SATA Seagate HD, I get a BSOD shortly after selecting the Intel drivers on the floppy.

If I configure SATA as IDE in the bios, I can get through the XP install process.
However, after I install the Intel INF package and my drivers, the computer seems to run slower and slower, occasionally locking up. If I try to run HDTach it locks up or reboots the whole machine when doing the final set of tests (sequential read test).

I've tried 3 sets of RAM (Corsair, PQI, K-Byte) in both single stick & dual channel configs, two different SATA HDs and two video cards.

Any ideas? A bad board perhaps? Should I try another P965-baed board or go with a tried & true 975x?

Is it just me, or is anyone else experiencing extremely long boot times when the High Definition Audio driver is enabled? Without the driver enabled (meaning no sound) my boot time is about 36 seconds from first pushing the power button to a fully functional desktop. With the HD driver enabled though, my boot time is 1 minute and 48 seconds...

This is only in XP and only with the Soundmax High Definition audio drivers though (I've tried the Realtek HD audio drivers, hoping they would work better, but no such luck). In Vista RC2, my boot time (with the default Vista sound drivers for HD audio) is about 36 seconds again. Unfortunately I can't seem to find an XP counterpart to match the Vista default HD drivers, otherwise I'd just use those.

Has anyone else encountered this? Is my only hope of reining in my boot time to get a sound card?

I've heard bad things about the onboard audio + drivers for this mobo. I haven't enabled the audio myself, so I can't help too much. I would suggest that you just get a Creative X-Fi card though. I can get them for about $84 canadian here and the sound quality + performance difference is worth the price imo.

the Audio drivers are to blame, i have the same issue, just wait for a driver update, nothing much to do till then or remove the audio drivers and regain your fast boot time.

on another note, i se eyou have the same CPU/MB/Memory as i do, however when i set my memory timing to manual and set it to 5-5-5-12 i cant pass memtest, while in SPD i can.
I think its an issues wiht the other setting that are not the same as in SPD (the lower part of the bios screen memory settings e.g Trfc, Trcd)
can you please provide your bios settings in full espacially on the memory/CPU part ?
and have you passed memtest and ORTHOS/Prime with thos overclock settings ? if so what was your temp on ORTHOS test.

thanks in advance

Yeah, I ended up disabling my onboard drivers (there was also a boot conflict that would halt my bootup on occasion). I'm getting a Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Music soundcard on monday, so I won't be without sound for too long. My boot time also skyrocketed to 28 seconds from a cold boot to a fully functional desktop.

P5B, I hadn't run ORTHOS under those memory settings (or any stress testers for that matter) until just today after seeing your post. It didn't go very well. After about 2 minutes, I got an error. So, I set myself the task of trying out different fsb speeds and RAM speeds/latencies to see what worked best. What I came up with (that has been running stable) is the following BIOS settings:

Advanced
JumperFree Configuration
- AI Tuning [manual]
- CPU Frequency [340]
- DRAM Frequency [DDR2-680MHz]
- PCI Express Frequency [100]
- Spread Spectrum [Disabled]
- Memory Voltage [2.00V]
- CPU VCore Voltage [1.3375V]
- FSB Termination Voltage [1.200V]
- NB VCore [Auto]
- SB Vcore (SATA, PCIE) [Auto]
- ICH Chipset Voltage [1.057V]

Chipset
--North Bridge Configuration
- Memory Remap Feature [Disabled]
- Configure DRAM Timings by SPD [Disabled]
-- DRAM CAS# Latency [4]
-- DRAM RAS# to CAS# Delay [4 DRAM Clocks]
-- DRAM RAS# Precharge [4 DRAM Clocks]
-- DRAM RAS# Activate to Precha [12 DRAM Clocks]
-- DRAM Write Recovery Time [5 DRAM Clocks]
-- DRAM TRFC [42 DRAM Clocks]
-- DRAM TRRD [ 10]
-- Rank Write to Read Delay [ 10]
-- Read to Precharge Delay [ 10]
-- Write to Precharge Delay [ 10]
- Statuc Read Control [Auto]

- Initiate Graphics Adapter [PCI/PEG]

Using the above settings on my P5B Deluxe motherboard, with my current memory and CPU, I've been ORTHOS stable for almost 9 hours now and counting. And my temps currently are:

CPU: Idle - 32 Celsius
CPU: Load - 45 Celsius

Motherboard (continuous): 35-38 Celsius

Hope that helps.

Oh, also... Though I know it is for a different board (the P5W) there are many BIOS settings that correspond to the P5B Deluxe that I found very handy here. It gives more detailed descriptions of the various BIOS settings and helps to optimize it better.

I have the vanilla P5B with a C2D E6600. I recently updated from the 0507 BIOS to the newer 0701. I now have a problem when I tell Windows XP Pro to restart, Windows will shutdown ok but then it just gets stuck at a blank screen and I have to shut off the power at the PSU to get it to boot again. Once that is done it will do the typical "double post" thing and come right up. What's really odd is when I soft shutdown from Windows and then power back up it no longer does the double post and comes up fine. The old BIOS would double post whenever it would restart. So it seems like it's trying to avoid the double post now when I do a restart but gets stuck and can't. Anyone else having this problem or know a solution besides going back to the old BIOS?

I bought this motherboard because of the reviews put on Internet for this motherboard. I am very much disappointed, esp from Anandtech for this driver issue I am sure was with them too, then why did they not mention it? It will take long time from ASUS and SOUNDMAX now to come up with fixed drivers. We hear no word on Internet about this problem in the reviews. Just point me to one review stating this problem or may be the review sites don't dare doing it as they won't be able to get "FREE things to test" from ASUS then? I say again, I am so much disappointed. I ask Anandtech reviewers to please look into this matter and post officially on your website or ask ASUS about this matter as you guys will be replied as VVIP than us.

Everyone who is using the onboard audio device instead of a seperate sound card like X-fi etc. Please contact and send e-mails regarding the said problem to,

Mr. Gary Key
gary.key@anandtech.com

and

Mr. Wesley Fink
wesley.fink@anandtech.com

As they reviewed the Board for Anandtech here:
http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=2797&p=5

Send both of them e-mail and complain about the said issue in audio drivers of P5B Deluxe and please ask them to have a review again or atleast mention of the driver problem publicly so ASUS and SOUNDMAX do it fast. There is no mention of the audio problem anywhere in this whole review. I blame all the review sites including Anandtech for not mentioning this problem in their reviews which made me buy this board. I usually have never went from INTEL Motherboards, I went this time. I should have perhaps sticked with Intel but I wanted to overclock this time...

Paying a premium price because of the reviews and you get stinky drivers. Disappointment from Anandtech too.

I don't have that problem. The only issue I have with the 0701 BIOS is during a restart, where the machine will power down for about 2 seconds and then power back on and post. The 0509 BIOS didn't do this. The cold boot issue is fixed with the 0701 BIOS. These problems go away as long as you don't set the FSB any higher than 299. But that's no fun if want a moderate to large overclock.

Afew suggestions and thoughs on overclocking and my experience.
First if you want to use the 800Mhz Capability of your RAM , u should set the FSB to 400Mhz (choose a 1:1 Divider )

choose a multiplier of 8 (400Mhzx8=3.2Ghz)

the important thing here now is to USE the SPD ENABLED function., i'm not sure why but i cant pass memtest when i set SPD to manaul even if i go and set teh settings as reported by CPUZ when set to SPD in bios (e.g 5-5-5-18)

and i think you can use 1.95V on the memory.
(i dont fully rememebr but yo might need to raise your NB/FSB termination voltage abit.

It worked for me , BUT i was ideling at 51c and loaed went too high too quickly, so i gave up, i might have a cooling issue on my CPU as i'm no where near getting 45c on load
btw i'm using CPU core to test the temp.

your temps are REALLY low compared to me at stock (this also of course dependent on you ambeint temp, I have around 40c case closed and ORTHOS fully loaded i get to 62-65c

i'm using stock HSF

On initial power up of a new system I'm getting no warning beeps and nothing on the monitor. I wonder if anyone can help.

The system is as follows;

P5B Deluxe
E6700
MEM 1Gx4 CORSAIR VS2GBKIT667D2
4x250 WD SATA II (2 connected for now)
CASE THERMALTAKE VA8000BWS
CPU FAN ZALMAN CNPS950
PSU HIPER HPU-4B580-MS 580W
DVD_BURN SAMSUNG SH-S182D
VGA MSI A RX1600PRO-TD256E

Initially the power seemed to cut off for a second, then the MB reset and started up, but no beeps during post and no video. 2nd power cycle it didn't reset, but still no beeps or video.
Turned everything off and rechecked my connections, same as before.
I've reset the CMOS according to a FAQ on the ASUS site, no change except that it no longer does the reset 1st time it starts up.
I've reset the power supply according to the same FAQ, no change.
Swapped the SAT cables to the 2 HDDs that are connected and powered in case the 1st is bad to avoid a HD error.
Pulled 3 of the mem sticks, no change, exchanged 1st 2 for 2nd 2, no change.
Removed all, no change.

Monitor is on and is a good one running on an older system.
Mouse and KB also run OK on my older system.
All the fans are running OK, including the CPU.
Power is getting to the DVD (drawer opens)
The MB LED is OK (blue in standby and pale red when running).

Could have a bad video card and I could check that out next weekend when I can get my hands on an old one of mine.

Anyone else had this problem or have some good ideas?

Thanks,

Mike

Have you ever flashed the bios and had the machine fail to POST afterwards?

I used the windows flash utility and upgraded my BIOS to the new 0710 version and, stupid me, didn't create a boot disk first. But even if I had ... the computer isn't even attempting to boot (no hard drive access, no floppy drive access, nothing).

That's not entirely true. After attempting to power off and on several times (sometimes by simply holding down the Soft Reset for 4 seconds, sometimes by pulling the plug) I finally decided to try pulling the battery out. Well... the first time I did this, it finally showed info on the screen. It said checksum was bad. And was attempting to boot off the floppy. (of course, I didn't have a floppy prepared, so no go)

I have since gotten a floppy disk together ... but I must have tried the same trick 20 more times to no avail. I've let the thing sit, unplugged, no batter, jumper set to drain the memory, for an hour. And after putting everything back, it still fails to POST.

Any ideas on how to get it going again? (should flashing the bios have incapacitated the MB like this?)
