I have Corsair TWINX PC5400 with P5B (Vanilla). It works great, no prob. I'm running it 782MHz @4-4-4-12 at vdimm 2.0 stably ( > 4 hours of Orthos ).

No problems. If you installed the drivers for it then it should be working fine. If not then it's probably bad.

The Abit RX700 256PCIE Pro might be causing me grief with the restarts I think. My coworker sold it to me with a bad fan on the heatsink. I've replaced the fan since but I'm not sure if it's a compatibility issue or what. What video card are you running? I'm thinking of a video card under $100 from Fry's. Any recommendations?

I'm using this video card:

For around $100 I'd look for a 7600GS or an X1600 Pro.

I just got one of these, and of numerous issues pointed out by bterrill in his well justified post, the most immediately annoying was horrible popping and crackling on the onboard audio. I fixed it by disabling all DTS options. Went away instantly, worked like a charm. Just sharing.

Wow, I wish you had posted this a week ago. Your story sounds identical to mine, except that I ended up RMA'ing the motherboard. It was brand new so they replaced it for free. But ... I paid for the overnight shipping to get the replacement! <argh>

Ok I finally got it fixed. I had downloaded the wrong INF file from INTEL. I needed the P956 Express chipset update. After doing that everything appears to be working. I'm running some benchmark tests on it to see how things go. One other problem I'm having is why does my IDE DVD/RW drives show up as SCSI?!?!??! Is it going to be a problem for me to use it in that state?

Update: I ran 3Dmark on it this build (abit RX700 256PCIE Pro) and I get 4fps! What am I doing wrong? Did I forget to set something in the BIOS for it to be this slow?!?!?!?!

Here's the hardware for my comp ...

Mobo:
Asus P5B,

Processor:
Intel "Conroe" E6600 2.4 (with N.O.S 2.6Ghz.)

Graphic card/gfx.:
Asus GeForce 7900GTX PCI-E x16

RAM:
1024MB. OCZ Platinum PC6400 800Mhz. CL4

PCI-device:
Creative SB Audigy 2 ZS

My problem is many things actually:
-> Problems first start to occur, when flashing BIOS to ver. 0701 <-

1: When overclocking more than 10% with N.O.S it won't make a WinXP startup (this is after updating/flashing BIOS to ver. 0701 date: 10/02/06)

2: Sometimes when I turn on the power button, my computer runs, but my flat-panel doesn't show anything on the screen.

3: BF2: Special Forces won't install. It tells me that there's not enough space available ---> http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f36/MunZen/BF2-SFinstall.jpg (I got PLENTY of space)

4: My keyboard sometimes halts when entering/in BIOS (and no, there have not been any problems with my MS Multimedia keyboard lately)

... and last but not least:

5: Can someone confirm on this: on-board sound is NOT something to do with a PCI-device (unless its a PCI-device)? When entering WinXP, it told me that a PCI-device was found. I couldn't see how it could find a PCI-device, when the only PCI-devices I've got, are PCI-E (VGA-card) and Creative SB Audigy 2 ZS.
Then I installed the sounddriver for the on-board sound, and that helped. But why? Again: the on-board sound, is NOT (in my definition) a PCI-device. It can't be ...

Depends on what test you're looking at. the video card you're using is not a DX9 part so it will probably be crap slow anyway.

Anyone else having problems with P5B with BIOS 701 and SB X-Fi ?

Seems like everytime I try to put my X-Fi into the machine and boot up the only thing
that will happen is the "black screen lock-up", meaning that after that I have to rip
all devices off from mobo and boot it just with CPU and mem to get PB5 booting again.

Then it will work again if I just use my Geforce in PCI-E slot and nothing in the PCI slots.

With BIOS 509 everything worked just fine, so sounds a bit ridiculous that it seems like
I have to downgrade BIOS now to get better compatiblity/stability.

ANSWER (to my own question): Doh!, The only thing I need to do was to change X-Fi to another PCI slot after upgrading BIOS from 509 to 701. Still this seems to be a bit silly but anyway..... It worked for me.

This thread is huge and I have alot of reading to do. Just hoping someone can give me some info to get me started.

1. Thinking of getting the Deluxe version of this board. I don't need wifi so no sense in getting that version unless there is something else I have overlooked.

2. I see some issues with the onboard sound. I do have an Audigy (I think it's the original, not Audigy 2) I can use with it. Is there a fix to the sound issues or is the regular Audigy better than the onboard sound anyways?

3. Wasn't there a P5B e Plus that was coming out but not definately in the US? Is that or is anything else coming soon that I should hold off? I know there's always something around the corner but I am thinking of buying within a months time (if I can hold off that long).

4. how is this board for overclocking on a scale of 1 - 10? 1 being horrible, 10 being excellent? BTW I am leaning towards the 6400 dual core chip.

5. I also need video card, RAM (2GB), power supply for this build. I already have case/SATA hard drives, DVD burner/Etc. Still doing research on these components but would like to hear suggestions if you can offer them?
I don't play alot of game sbut would like it powerful enough that I do have the option to play some recent games. I do a moderate amount of video editing.

Thanks for any advice.

I have been using mine now for about 3 months and have a problem with the usb.

I have the front usb's on my case plugged into usb 7-8 and it works fine but I also
have to back panel that came with the board to plug into usb 5-6.. I can't get it to work
no matter what I do.

Anyone else seen this...I have 9-10 that is on the wi-fi turned off...ok I disabled the wifii
and I assume this also turns off 9-10 but not sure...does anyone know for sure if this ONLY controls 9-10

thanks big time for any help ...there are just toooo many plugs LOL

1) no difference except the wi/fi card

2) Audigy is much much better than onboard...in fact any aftermarket card will be better.

3) The P5B-E is basically the normal P5B but with the new C2 chipset. The Deluxe still offers more than this board.

4) overclocking? 10! So far this board has achieved the highest FSBs of any P965 board to date.

5) For video I'd say a 7900gto would do fine, or even an x19xx (a midrange card not the high end) for memory I recommend Teamgroup memory. The only retailer I've found it at was tankguys.com. It's pretty cheap anyway... DDR2-800 4-4-4-10 for $287 (2GB). Other choices may include Patriot, G.Skill (HZ series ONLY), OCZ Platinum EL (not gold or anything else), Mushkin (anything they offer), Crucial Ballistix Tracer series, or Corsair (not the best overclocker unless you buy high end). Personally I'd go with Teamgroup...they're probably the only manufacturer that does not hide what chips they use in their memory. They use Micron D9GMH. The Higher end OCZ, Mushkin, G.Skill (HZ Series), high end Corsair, and Patriot memory uses these chips too. They provide the best compatability with the P965 BIOS (before a flash upgrade) and better overclocking than infenion etc.

When it comes to PSUs it's more about how you feel about particular brands. Enermax, Seasonic, OCZ, Corsair, and Fortron all have good models out there. Just remember, Seasonic builds many if not all of the OCZ and Corsair models. So in effect, you're buying a Seasonic PSu if you go with one from either manufacturer. This is a good thing, Seasonic is a good name and has a solid reputation. I'd probably go with a PSu in the 500-600watt range so you have room to grow. I am not a fan of telling someone "you don't need that much power" because it's always good to have reserves on hand if you can make it into your budget.

Thanks for all the info cmdrdredd.

I had my eye on the 7900GTO @newegg but I didn't act fast enough. If they come back in stock I may go ahead and buy everything.

I have heard of teamgroup and will take a look at tankguys.com. Memory is pretty high priced all around now but I can't wait forever for it to drop.

I know it may be a hard question to answer but about how much better (gaming, video editing) will a E6400/pb5 deluxe/2GB RAM and a 7900gto (or equivalnet) be compared to a pentium 3.2e/3GB RAM and XFX 6800GT???

Teamgroup is the most reasonably priced and readily available memory I can find. I'd recommend it first and foremost and you ALWAYS know you're getting the D9GMH which are the best out there right now. Others you have to wait for a specific model to get in stock or buy one of the high end and hope you get it. Teamgroup memory is pretty cheap. DDR2-800 with 4-4-4-10 timings for under $300 is a steal right now.

As far as the performance difference it's like night and day. That's all I can say.

One other problem I'm having is why does my IDE DVD/RW drives show up as SCSI?!?!??! Is it going to be a problem for me to use it in that state?

I noticed the same problem on my machine. It turned out that I had the JMicron controller set to RAID. Setting it to IDE fixed it. (Note: This setting is in the BIOS)

I don't know what you would do if you're using the JMicron for RAID. I use the Intel RAID.

Hi
Sorry, I know this might be answered 100 of times here, but this thread is so long I have no chance...

Look, I'm completely new to overclocking but have a high technical knowledge. I want to overclock my DAW and it is important that it is stable.

Does anybody have satable overclock settings for my configuration (see signature) and can you tell me where I can set up all this stuff? I'm asking because in the asus AI utility I can not set the voltages, and in the bios I can't setup everythin either.

Thank you for your help.

Here are the BIOS settings I'm using currently. CPU temps using a Zalman 9500 are around 46C idle and 63C load with chipset temps around 39C constant. RAM is Crucial (Micron) DDR2-800. As time permitts, I still need to go back and fine-tune these voltages by reducing them each one step at a time and retesting stability to see if I can get any lower.

Wow! great. Thank you very much. Thats a big help already.

What CPU do you use? You dont overclock a E6600 (2.4Ghz) to 3.6ghz, do you? Or do I get something wrong, because my multiplyer is 9, with your external frequencey of 400 that would make 3.6 ghz... oder did you lower the multiplyer to 8? I never touched the multiplyer so far.

Why don't you push the ram higher? Did you experience problems?

At the moment I have set the external clock to 337Hz and have the e6600 running stable at 3.03ghz. Ram is on 889Mhz, voltages on auto.

What is your PCmark 05 CPU score? Mine is 7784, and the memory is 6552

You have to pay for Pro (no thanks) to get those scores from PC Mark.

Oops - I should have put all that into a signature (added).

My plan has always been for an easy 24/7 overclock with the RAM running a straight 1:1 ratio. Testing higher speeds/lower latencies hasn't yet been a priority as I've only had the system running for a couple of weeks. Anyway, I derived my various settings from all the accumulated settings I've seen posted on various forums.

I don't know about yours but my copy of PCMark05 includes 16 tests only a few of which appear to be tied to CPU speed alone (video encoding KB/s, for instance). Generally, the tests appear to be composite in nature with scores looking nothing like the figures you quoted above so I'm unsure how to answer your question about that.

The PCMark score is a composite score based on an average of the tests, If you pay for the pro version you can get more tests and individualize them.

Transparent Windows 713.84 Windows/s
3D - Pixel Shader 87.54 FPS
Web Page Rendering 5.47 Pages/s
File Decryption 83.68 MB/s
Graphics Memory - 64 Lines 1137.34 FPS
HDD - General Usage 8.17 MB/s
Multithreaded Test 1 / Audio Compression N/A
Multithreaded Test 1 / Video Encoding Test failed
Multithreaded Test 2 / Text Edit 205.85 Pages/s
Multithreaded Test 2 / Image Decompression 42.9 MPixels/s
Multithreaded Test 3 / File Compression 11.81 MB/s
Multithreaded Test 3 / File Encryption 33.36 MB/s
Multithreaded Test 3 / HDD - Virus Scan 5.81 MB/s
Multithreaded Test 3 / Memory Latency - Random 16 MB 14.61 MAccesses/s

It's the fastest HD speed I ever had, but I think it's way to slow for SATA2 Raid.. I don't know why

Clones123, that's funny, but I have a comp with almost the same specs. The only difference I can see is the case (Antec NSK 6500), the cpu heatsink (Arctic Cooling Pro 7) and the memory (some cheap Kingston ValueRam DDR-667). I managed to get the same overclock but without the horrendous voltages you applied to the components frying on your mobo. The CPU runs with 1.32V, memory with 1.95 (FSB: 401MHz, DDR-802), everything else set to auto. With the performance profile enabled I got a pretty quiet and stable system (59 C load in TAT, 39C on the NB). There is absolutely no need to set the voltages so high! My comp has been running without a single problem for 5 weeks now.

Graphics Memory - 64 Lines.......................... 2293.587 FPS
HDD - General Usage................................... 5.513MB/s
Multithreaded Test 1 / Audio Compression...... 3347.593 KB/s
Multithreaded Test 1 / Video Encoding............ 582.777 KB/s
Multithreaded Test 2 / Text Edit..................... 229.390 Pages/s
Multithreaded Test 2 / Image Decompression. 44.870 MPixels/s
Multithreaded Test 3 / File Compression......... 7.709 MB/s
