Which specific "horrendous" voltages are you referring to?

My Crucial RAM is spec'd at 2.2 volts so I chose 2.25 instead of 2.15 - no big deal.
My FSB Termination, NB, and SB voltages are each one step above minimum.
Running my E6400 at 3.2 GHz and 1.35V, I got a corrupted video encoding session (H.264) so, without any experimentation or troubleshooting, I just bumped up one step to 1.3625V and haven't seen the error again. I -DO- plan at some point to reduce each setting one step at a time and test again looking for errors but that's going to take time.

With chipset temps around 39C, it hardly seems like I'm "frying" anything, dude.

BTW; Doesn't the NB strapping issue kick in at your chosen 401MHz FSB? Have you compared your 401MHz benchmarks against 400MHz benchmarks?

Hi,

1/ Does the P5B vanila only have digital outputs (called S/PDIF or something) or does it also have analogue stereo outputs?

1/b/ Is that the same with the Deluxe version and most motherboards in general?

2/ Will I need to install a soundcard if my speakers only receive analogue stereo inputs?

I set 401MHz exactly for the reasons described by Tony. I prefer things relaxed instead of running into trouble for 1% of extra performance.

Memory Voltage...............2.25 (default is 1.8)
CPU VCore Voltage..........1.3625 (default is 1.248)
FSB Termination Voltage...1.3 (default is 1.2 on auto)
Northbridge VCore...........1.45 (default is 1.25 on auto)
Southbridge VCore...........1.6 (default is 1.5 on auto)

I can understand rising the VCore, however all the other things run just fine at their standard settings, including the memory at 2.15. For pits' sake - Crucial claims that their memory runs fine at 2.15. What do you need 2.25V for? And rising FSB, NB and SB I won't even comment. Overclocking is not a rocket science and with Conroe it has never been easier to get 50% extra power without too much playing with the voltages. Well, do what you want, but you can get the same stability with much healthier settings.

One more thing - you can get much more from you 7900GT. My Asus 7900GS with the same cooler runs at 579 core, 770 memory.

P.S. Last time I checked I wasn't your "dude" so please stop calling me that.

You might try posting in the thread below to tell them how jacked up their settings are. Many of them are running even higher voltages than myself.
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=115217

My understanding of the chipset engineering is that on "Auto" the chipset voltages are set to scale with FSB speed (FSB Termination Voltage in particular) and thus high-overclocks can result in excessive voltages. In overclocking one strives to find the smallest fixed voltage settings that will work for the FSB/CPU speed desired. It strikes me as counterintuitive that rock-bottom minimum voltages would work on a high overclock with no problems as you've indicated. This is the opposite of what many people on the XtremeSystems forums have posted. However, I'll have to give those minimum settings a try myself one day just to see if they really work. If so, then I've been listening to a bunch of seriously misinformed people and thank you for pointing out the error.

Why does it matter if he runs 2.25 instead? 2.25 may actually allow different (i.e tighter) timings to be used. Although you may not find any errors in your setup someone else may by stressing a certain component just a bit differently and get a BSOD.

401Mhz FSB is slow memory performance and the "trouble" you claim is there is actually non-existant for me. So thanks but no thanks.

Hello there,
I've just built my new PC, based on the Asus P5B Deluxe, with an Intel E6600 CPU @ 2.4GHz, with 2GB of Geil DDR2-800MHz RAM.
I've had no problems with it at all, everything is running great.
I have a question about getting the RAM to run at the specified 800MHz. At the moment, with an FSB of 266MHz, the RAM is running at 533MHz.
Ok, how do I get it to run at 800MHz? Do I (a) overclock the CPU to 3.6GHz (multiplier 9) giving me a 400MHz FSB which gives me a 1:1 ratio, which as I understand it, is preferable?
Or (b) can I change the multiplier to 6, and up the FSB to 400MHz to give me 1:1 ratio with RAM running at 800MHz without overclocking the CPU? Are there any negatives to this method? (apart from the obvious lack of speed increase for CPU)
I've built lots of computers, but never overclocked one. I'd like to get the most out of these sticks of RAM and I'm told that they will happily run at 800MHz with 4-4-4-12 timings @ 2.1 volts.
I would prefer not to up the CPU freq yet, as I'm still using the stock Intel CPU Fan.
Can anyone give advice on this? can anyone suggest a good CPU cooler which is compatible with this board? I'm thinking about a Zalman CNPS9500, Is this a good choice?

Thankyou.

You can set the DRAM speed independently of any other settings in BIOS even with everything else on Auto.

I have the 9500AT and it's certainly nice-looking and very well made. However, it's 92mm fan doesn't provide the cooling/quietness that a different heatsink with dual 120mm fans in a push/pull configuration would.

Thanks Clones123,
I've experimented with setting the DRAM speed to 800Mhz....but that gives me a FSB ratio of 2:3. What I would like to know is can I use the multiplier to achieve a 1:1 ratio, by LOWERING the value to say 6, which if I raised the FSB to 400MHz, this would give me optimum 1:1 ratio & ram running at 800MHz....without having to Overclock the CPU (E6600 @ 2.4GHz) or am I missing something here???
Thanks

Anyone have problems using a bootCD to ghost their system? I used one of my bootCD's that has never failed on any of my old systems but can't seem to load correctly on my P5B (vanilla) box. I don't know if this is related to the fact that Device Manager in WinXP shows it as a SCSI drive. I was thinking that even if I get a floppy disk drive installed in this box that I'll still have the problem with it trying to load the drivers for the IDE CD ROM drive. I was also considering creating a USB flash drive boot w/ ghost.exe on it so I can ghost my system. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

This is a MUST read for anyone wanting to reduce their CPU multiplier on a P965 chipset:

hiya guys. hoping for a little help

i just got this mobo today (p5b deluxe) and am running it with a PD 805 (till quad core is cheap) and have 2 diff sets of RAM to test with.

1 stick of 256mb crucial ddr2 and 2gb of elixir pc5300 ram. i have tried with 1 then the other and whatever ram i use, the pc boots but after a short time (10 secs to a minute) it will reboot itself.

i tried the crucial ram in the first yellow slot and the pc wouldnt boot at all at that point - just beeps. 1 semi long beep with 2 shorter beeps after. put that stick in the 3rd ram slot and that doesnt happen

is this mobo like the dfi nforce mobos where you 'have' to use the orange slots for the most part?

what about the black slots?

Has anyone had any success in using either SpeedFan or Asus Probe software to control fan speeds? No mater what I do, the fans are running fast and noisy.

I'm using S-FLEX SFF21E fans with 3 pin connections - I'm not expecting these to work with the 4pin CPU fan connection on the P5B-Deluxe, but i would expect them to work with the 3-pin chassis/power fan connections.

A quiet computer is important to me for home audio recording - unfortuantely, I have to fix the fans speeds to 5V or 7V to get them to a quiet enough level. By, dynamic fan speed control seems to make so much more sense and I'm getting frustrated now that I can't work it out.

Cheers,
Stuart.

i got my replacement P5b deluxe wifi from RMA. put AS5 on NB/SB and put a fan on NB. got a zalman 9500 on and temps are coooooool now. 40 idle vs 60 before. up to 480 fsb vs 472 stable previously on orthos etc.

i have my zalman on another fan header and i control fan with its rheostat. for the cpu header, i put my arctic freezer pro fan near it to blow air across the RAM sticks. in bios, i have it set to silent and RPMS dropped form 2k to 500.

Has anyone here experimented with the new 0804 BIOS for the P5B deluxe from the ASUS website? (2006/10/30 update)

P5B Deluxe Release BIOS version 0804
1. Support conroe L processor
2. Update JMicron option rom 1.06.22
3. Modify CPU fan low limit speed from 800 RPM to 600 RPM
4. Implement ASUS CGI performance with ATI 1950 graphic cards

Cheers. (Thanks Clones123 for the info)

If you are having audio issues (crackling, popping, etc.) check to make sure that your drives are running using DMA. There seems to be a problem with these 965 boards, where the ports go into PIO mode after some time.

I checked mine & sure enough my boot drive was running in PIO mode - as soon as I changed it, my audio problems went away.

PS - There is a handy little VBS script on this page that resets all your drives back to DMA

Update: I keep seeing these timeout errors in my event log; so I need to find a long term solution or keep running the script every few days

The simple solution for "black screen" problem.

1. Rip off everything else that CPU and GPU-card from MB
2. Power up and then Power down
3. Install 512Mb DDR2 533Mhz memory DIMM (Single only!!!)
4. Power up and then power down
5. Remove temporary memory and install your desired ram and peripherals and power up
6. There you go

I have crackling and distortion anytime there is a remotely loud sound and it is severe if I set system high, and still there with main and wave volume low.
I checked and my drives are set to run in DMA, I am booting from SATA. I do have an optical drive and another hard drive with the PATA connector, do I need to set DMA there as well as I cannot find a setting with the controller?
I have a P5B Deluxe. Is there anything else I can try or how can I check DMA for the PATA controller.

Thanks

Can anyone tell me the "safe" operating temp for the P5B Deluxe motherboard?
I've just installed mine in a new Akasa case, with 2 case fans (front/rear) and according to PC Probe 2, the motherboard is reaching temperatures above 45 degrees (46/47).
With Q-fan turned on, in optimal mode, the fans should speed up to produce more airflow and better cooling, but they just seem to stay at a constant 850RPM approx.
If I turn off Q-Fan control and run the fans flat out (1250RPM), I get no problem alerts in PC Probe 2.
Has PC Probe got it wrong? The 45 degree threshold was set by the software (60 degrees for CPU). I have no problems at all with CPU temps (below 50 degrees)
Why does Q-fan not raise the RPM of the fans BEFORE reaching ASUS's suggested cut off point?
Q-fan does not seem to be doing it's job.
This system is NOT overclocked...not until I figure out this issue anyway!
Any suggestions??

I have just built a new PC, based on an ASUS P5B Deluxe mobo

Everything was going well, I had the system running XP perfectly. I was advised on another forum to flash the BIOS since the latest BIOS offers some good overclocking features (I thought I might want to later)

I downloaded the 8.04 BIOS ROM from the ASUS site as directed and used the new ASUSUpdate tool. It seemed to work and verified the flash as successful.

It then asked me to reboot.

Upon POSTing, a warning came up telling me that the "Overclocking was not successful" or something similar. It gave an option to revert to previous settings, which I did.

Now the PC wont boot past the blue ASUS splash screen, pressing TAB or DEL does nothing.

I followed the manual to the letter in resetting the CMOS (Clear RTCRAM), by disconnecting power, removing battery and moving the jumper etc.

It still wont boot past the ASUS splash screen.

I feel a bt sick, have just spent £800 on this new family PC....

Can anyone help???

Cheers

Jim

turn of Subwoofer in DTS options, should fix the distorted sound. May need to turn off DTS NEO and DTS Interactive as well.

DTS and 3d sound is currently broken. See this thread

Thanks cmdrdredd.
Is that 40c temp Idle or under load?
What is considered to be "safe" temperature? I've asked this question at the ASUS site and nobody seems to have an answer (yet). Surely it's not an unusual question?!

Hi, I was wondering if anyone knew if the 9500LED fit on the P5b-e? Just want to make sure as I'm going to order that board tomorrow.

@Rizlaboy

dont go over 60C thats borderline anything under is safe. so monitor your temps when you are running a game full screen or 100% cpu usage.

@Darknessxk

I dont recommend 9500 for cooling cpu maybe for looks. You be alot better off with the thermalright ultra-120 or tuniq tower, scythe ninja, noctua nh-u12 or the big typhoon they do a better job.
