I can't get the JMicron IDE connector to accept any hard drives. It sits during POST saying "Detecting drives..." for several minutes and then finally gives up. If I plug a DVD drive in instead, it instantly shows the name of the drive and boots up.

Nothing seems to change these facts; I tried different cables (both ATA 133 I think), DVD drives, hard drives, master/slave jumper settings, BIOS settings. I also used AFUDOS.exe to flash to BIOS 0804. The hard drives generate noise and heat, and the enclosure I tried shows both the "IDE active" and "IDE power" lights on, but never are recognized. The HD's I tried were 100 GB and 20 GB Western Digital 7200 RPM's.

you have a serious issue with perception.

i responded earnestly to your thread here:
http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=29&threadid=1992377&enterthread=y

and in fact it was YOU who failed to respond with information to me who was asking you questions trying to help you. the funny thing is that YOU are the rude person and yet are acting all high and mighty. even after you didnt answer me i still provided a link to the largest page of a p5b-deluxe thread that i found thanks to core 2.

my response about my ram was in response to a post just above on THIS PAGE where someone said they were using the same ram i had as well as the p5b-d and getting great results. i forgot to hit quote and hit reply instead.

either way you can take your misplaced attitude and shove it.

Then I apologize for my attitude. I honestly thought your repeatedly introducing Windows driver issues into the matter was some kind of joke, when my PC is already screwed up during POST.

eh no problem. sorry i got mad.

i really was trying to help you. i have heard of this issue when researching this board. some say it has to do with the jmicron controller drivers. some say install them some say not to and just let windows use its own drivers.

if you installed the asus disc and let it install all the drivers for you, then it did install the jmicron driver so uninstall them. you will find info on this in that thread i linked you in my last post.

good luck.

Hi everyone I need a little bit of help.

I just bought the P5B Deluxe along with a E6600 and a Thermaltake Big Typhoon CPU Cooler.

I am in the process of installing the Big Typhoon right now but it requires that I install a backplate onto the P5B Deluxe. (The backplate is the Metal support that goes on the back of the motherboard to support the Big Typhoon).

The problem I am having is that The P5B Deluxe Motherboard doesnt seem like it was designed for backplates, there are alot of those little chrome pins in the way interfering with the backplate installation.

There is no way around those pins. If I install this backplate it would have to go right over the top of them and put pressure on them????

So how can I properly install a backplate onto this motherboard?

Thanks for the help.

Hi,
How's everyone doing. I'm here to report compatibility with Windows Vista (32-bit Ultimate, RTM) with P5B Deluxe Wifi. Everything went great and recognized by Windows, including intel matrix RAID (no more F6 floppy!). Only thing that is not recognized is Wifi card. Latest driver provide by Asus works but not compat with WPA/PSK and you need to download previous v1212 (found at MG).
The real culprit is SoundMAX driver (as you could guess ). Windows does recognize the SoundMAX chip as generic HD Audio. The playback went fine and no cracking with MS driver. Front/rear jack sensing function also works fine. One problem, the MIC doesn't fully work. You can see the level and use it in speech recognition but all other apps does NOT recognize the MIC as recording device for some reason. This is happening on both front and rear jack.
So, I'm off installing Asus's SoundMAX driver. The latest version (dated 12/25/2006). The cracking/popping sound is back. It is on 'acceptable' level with regular volume but much worse at high volume level. The MIC works but MIC boost only works at front port (*sigh*). Jack sensing is unusable. Also, the driver make my machine unable to shutdown! It stuck at "Shutting down" screen for 15 mins before giving BSOD (saying about driver issue).
There you have it. If you don't need MIC, I suggest you stick with MS provided driver. Everything else are running great in Vista.

I have had severe problems with Intel Matrix RAID and loaded 32-bit Vista Ultimate RTM. For hardware, see below. I will never again use a motherboard RAID controller.

I set it up with RAID 10 (4 identical drives). But twice now the RAID settings have been lost. By "lost" I mean that on restart, my drives no longer belong to a RAID array. and no RAID array is defined.

When I set up the array in the BIOS again, all data is lost.

For the sake of saving typing, let's assume I followed the setup instructions very carefully. In fact, the second time through I was ridiculously careful. After that, it ran fine for about two months.

I am now trying to figure out how to recover. Do I redefine the same raid array and run Spinrite to recover the data? Or do I run Spinrite on the bare drives somehow?

well it took a couple hours because when i disabled SPD timings for my ram so i could OC this board it gave the last 4 timing settings a default of 10-10-10-10 when they are supposed to be totally different.

after finding this out via googling for awhile i am nowstable at 3.28 with temps looking sub 53 (as5 is brand new) under load, orthos stable.

nice, this took me 2 less days to set up than my 650i board due to sata errors and i am going faster at the same volties in bios.

i like the bios interface of the p5n-e sli but this one has more voltage options and other options.

time to go shoot some mofos!

temps seem a decent amount higher at the same volties as the p5ne-sli. but the oc is much stabler.

i wonder which is correc.t

My P5B vanilla got shipped with a 0205 BIOS. Booted up fine with OCZ Platinum DDR2 800s. Flashed to 0908 BIOS, and things are way more stable.

So far, I am able to do the tight ram timings at 4-4-4-12-4 (2.1v) and run at 400x8 = 3.2Ghz on a 1.35v Vcore. 1.325v fails for some reason in Orthos but boots up fine.

Since you're using the P5B deluxe, you should be able to get better overclocks according to overclocking databases (especially at HardForum).

Very Easy Guide for total noobs to intergrate Raid/Ahci drivers into your XP CD so you wont ever have to use floppy drive and F6 ever again.

The markymoo way - Takes 10mins

Lets Begin

1. Download net framework - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en
2. Install netframework
3. Download nlite - http://www.nliteos.com/
4. Install nlite
5. Make a folder on C drive called Xp
6. Make a folder on C drive called Intel
7. Get the latest Intel® Matrix Storage Manager driver here http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/imsm/index.htm - At this time the version is 6.2, the file is iata621_enu.exe.
8. Run this file but dont press Next yet! Instead browse to C:\WINDOWS\Temp\IIF\Winall\Driver and you find your unpacked ahci/raid drivers.
9. Copy ALL those 6 files to C:\Intel
10. Now click cancel and exit and you can now delete the iata621_enu.exe, you wont be needing it.
11. Get your XPSP2 CD, lick it clean, wipe it well then insert it.
12. Run nlite
13. Click Next
14. Select the Browse button and select the drive letter of your XPCD and click Ok
15. Then select where you want to save the XPSP2 files. Select C:\Xp
16. Wait for it to copy the files. lalala
17. Click Next 2x
18. Select Drivers and select Bootable ISO so they light up green.
19. Click Next.
20. Click Insert/Single driver and Browse to C:\Intel and select the file iastor.inf
21. Hold down CTRL key and click the 2 ICH8R so they both highlighted and click Ok.
22. Now click Next.
23. Click Yes ands start the process.
24. Wait until you see Finished then click Next.
25. Insert a blank 700mb disk.
26. In the box Label type XPSP2_RAID then click Make ISO and select C:
27. Wait lalala until you see ISO created sucessfully.
28. Burn the image with nero lite v7.5.7.0 Micro http://www.updatepack.nl/ or instead at step 26 also select Burn Image instead if available.
29. You now have a original XPSP2 with built in Raid/Ahci drivers
30. You can now bin your floppy drive.

Well I upgraded to new BIOS and I did not feel much difference.
Not a change for SoundMAX so far.
Same OC, same settings.
No big effects here.

I'm thinking about buying a P5B Deluxe and have a few questions I didn't spot the answers to scanning this lengthy thread...

- I'd like to put 4GB ram (DDR2-800) in the system. Is there any issues with doing this? I see above a recent BIOS says "support x4 DIMM": does that mean prior BIOS could only support 2 mem sticks? Does that imply that 4x DIMMs may not be fully debugged/stable yet? Will it hurt overclocking to have 4GB ram? Would 2x2GB sticks be better? Any recommendations for the ram to buy if I want to run with 4GB?

- I've seen stuff in some product reviews mentioning problems with IDE drives. I will have two optical IDE drives in my system, will this be an issue?

- Will the Zalman 9700 heat sink fit this MB without modification? What about the Zalman 9500?

- Besides WiFi, is there anything different between the Deluxe WiFi and the Deluxe boards?

Thanks!

Okay, guys, I just got my P5B and I need your help. The board seems solid enough so far, but at its current settings (9*333) it shuts down and restarts when you do a reboot. For example, when rebooting Windows, the system powers down and then back on again. It keeps the overclocking settings intact, though.

I haven't fiddled enough with it to find out exactly when it happens. I just thought I'd throw you the question to see if its a known issue.

>Will it hurt overclocking to have 4GB ram?

I haven't used 4 GB, but more hardware means more ways to be unstable and more testing required. If you want four DIMMS make sure they are Asus-approved, I used 2x1 GB non-approved DIMMS (OCZ DDR2-800 PC6400 1.9-2.1V 4-4-4-15) and got lucky I guess because it works fine. One possible problem could be if the chips can't boot at 1.8V (the DDR2 standard), then you would have to use some other DIMM temporarily to boot up and get into the BIOS.

I believe Windows XP 32-bit might not be able to take full advantage of 4 GB.

>I've seen stuff in some product reviews mentioning problems with IDE drives. I will have two optical IDE drives in my system, will this be an issue?

There's only one PATA IDE connector on the board, so you will have to use a master/slave combo. It's a bit awkwardly placed, but basically works. Don't install JMicron drivers in Windows; they may cause problems and don't seem necessary anyway. The real problem with this board is horrible, bug-ridden on-board sound and drivers. Look in the dumpster for any old sound card you can find and it will be better.

>see if its a known issue.

Yes, my PC starts, dies immediately, and then boots up EVERY time. I wonder how long this mobo and power supply will survive with this stupidity.

BTW, the JMicron connector supports RAID, but I wouldn't bother with that. I used the Intel ICHR0801 chip SATA connectors to do RAID 0, and it worked as advertised. In the end I decided I didn't like RAID that much though, so I went back to normal.

I don't know if this is a well known trick, but if you overclock wrongly and your PC crashes, and won't boot up again, try the following. Turn off or unplug the power supply, wait a few seconds, and then turn it back on. Hold Insert on the keyboard and while holding it down, press the power button. Keep holding insert until you hear beeps/disk access and it will be booting up normally.

That's right, Windows XP 32bit will not use all of the 4Gb memory, think it was that it use about 3Gb, had something to do with memory-controller and PCIe lanes I belive.

Windows XP 64bit has no such problems though.

Im using a Soundblaster X-Fi Fatality soundcard so I havent tried Soundmax yet but if you look at Anandtechs 965p chipset roundup they say it is fixed along with new drivers.

I think they said something like "the board is fixed, except for some users". I'm not sure if this is some kind of joke. Either it's fixed, or it's f'd up.

I've been using 0910 BIOS for a very long time now, and the various suggestions help but ultimately the rice-krispies sounds of this board drove me crazy. I resorted to a SoundBlaster Live 5.1.

FYI, it looks like a 1004 BIOS just came out.

Thanks.
I do OC and run Intel Matrix RAID. I couldn't really afford much risk
How's speedstep working after flashed?
