hi, i'm new here. i'd like to know what the latest bios is for this board and what you guys' experiences are with the bioses.

edit: if i'm not using the onboard audio, can i still use the supplied asus array mic? i'm not even sure if it was supposed to be included in the package as it appears to only work with the wifi/ap edition.

Hi folks,

I just built an e4300, P5B-E system and am stumped on debugging an error. Some details on the setup:
- BIOS is 1102
- all of the drivers are up to date (except the 3/9 post of the audio dirver)
- running XP SP2
- 37GB raptor is SATA running in IDE mode
- temps are great. cpu cores idle in the 30's and go to high 50's with TAT stress test. mobo temp creeps up to no more than 39C.
- 8800GTS 320MB card that idles at 52C and heat up to 60+C when cranking.
- power supply is corsair 520 - and this setup uses just a fraction of the power available.
- running stock speeds and voltages.

Failure mode:
- stable with low stress cpu use and 2D graphics. Started crashing while gaming. So, I started running stress tests.

- Hard drive test shows no bad sectors and in-line performance.
- TAT runs forever. Never gets above 60C.
- memtest 86+ runs forever without error.
- Microsoft's dos memory test runs forever.
- Prime 95 and Orthos run forever when FFT size is small (<512k - breakpoint might be lower). They give a rounding error halt when FFT size is large (512k and greater).

Any thoughts?

Are you overclocking at all?

Memory is Corsair CM2X1024-6400C4 4-4-4-12

Running default timing on board: 400MHz, 5-5-5-18
Note - I did increase the memory voltage to 2.1V.

OK! First test try to run just one stick of ram.
Then try to set the timings to spec. Set it manually.

What slots are you using? The yellow slots? Try to use that.

Good luck!

Yep - the board doesn't like to run at 200MHz CPU x 9 and 400MHz Memory clock...using one stick or two, default memory timings or forcing to the spec'd 4-4-4-12.

Tried a couple of other configurations - it booted at 300MHz CPU clock and 300MHz mem clock - ran fine with TAT (temp maxed in high 60's) but rebooted during the first run of Orthos...

I dialed the CPU clock down to 280MHz and running the memory at 350MHz 4-4-4-12 for a 5:4 ratio. Have run 2 cycles of Orthos without halting. TAT is reading 59C for the cores, Everest shows 42C for the mobo, and the Raptor shows 32C in SMART.

I'm using the black memory slots as the first yellow slot is occluded by my Ninja Samarai/fan...I could push the fan up a tad and the memory might fit...but then, less air going to the VRM chips.

In any case, it appears stable for now....I may mess aroun with it more later. Any additional thoughts are welcome.

Hi, long time reader first time poster.

My problem is that i'm smply a noob here. Or, indeed what is considered a success.

I'm currently running a 6300 @ 3Ghz stable, (1.2875v). My idle temp is 39/40C and load is 50/51C. Using a Zalman 9500 flower.

This sound about right?

Hi people, I bought a P5B recently after reading 20 review sites and after buying started finding about the problems...

So anyway, ill be setting my machine sometime today or tomorrow coz my gfx card is yet to arrive so I was asking that since ill be using only 1 HDD, should I install the jmicron drivers or not and if the sound problems have been rectified by the latest driver set.

thanks!

First of all welcome to AT casteve, jimfishybob and shubh!

Glad to hear you got it stable casteve. Keep working on that OC! Hehehehehehe

Jimfishybob, it seem right to me the temp. My friend got the same HSF as you, and it is about the same.

shubh if you are going to use a IDE drive then you will have to install the JMicron. Otherwise I think you are good to go.
I don't know about the sound.

Hello all. I think I have finally managed to read through this entire thread - lots of good info in here.

Anyway, I just switched from a Asrock 775 Dual-VSTA motherboard to the P5B Deluxe/WiFi for use with my e6600 and 2x1 GB Patriot DDR2 667 memory. Things are very stable. I am currently running at 9x333 = 3 Ghz. However, I have to run 1.32 volts for this. I have been able to run at 9x366 and 9x400 as well, but the voltage requirements seem excessive for me. I can't get the board to post at 366 unless I am pushing over 1.4 volts and the only way I can post at 400 is in auto, which overvolts to 1.55 volts. Am I missing something?

I have tried to mimick other user's settings, upping the NB, SB, termination voltage as well. It just seems odd that some users can get to 400 mhz at 1.3 volts, while I need 1.55. I have a Zalman 9500 cooler, but at 1.5 volts, my temps are at about 50 idle.

9x333@1.32 volts = 36 idle, 45 TAT load
9x366@1.4 volts = 43 idle, 55 TAT load
9x400@1.55 volts = 51 idle, 62 TAT load

These are bios settings, not speedfan readings (i know about Vdroop).

This is with new AS5 applied.

the latest bios (1007 or whatever). Does anyone have any advise on how to get it to post or be stable in windows at higher FSB, without needing to up the voltage so much? I read posts about people hitting 400 mhz with 1.36 volts. I can't get anywhere near that, unless I am missing some magical settings.

Thanks

I am using 4GB (4x1) of RAM with WinXP Pro; the computer sees 3007 MB.

I guess when I decide to 'upgrade' to VISTA, I'll be able to use all of it.

Good Luck!

Set the optical drive as the 1st boot device in the BIOS.
And when you install the Windows you will need to press F6 in the beginning of the installation.
Then you will install the drivers of the JMicron and the SATA drivers.
Just keep in mind to make the floppy disk with the drivers in it.

Try to set the FSB Termination voltage to 1.40 and the NB voltage to 1.45 and set the PCI-E frequency to 105.

And check if you got the x16.

I had problem with x1 PCI-E.

If you check a couple of my posts back you will see.
But try this.

Good luck!

hey, could you care to explain...

if the IDE drive requires the driver, how will it detect the windows.

also, how do I make the jmicron driver floppy? will the cd make it for me from another machine?

and,

could you give me a detailed guide on the process you gave me?>

should I enter bios using del or whatever and set 1st boot device to optical drive then restart with xp cd in the drive and the driver floppy in the floppy drive?
then as soon as install starts I press f6 and then what?

im not really a hardware techie so some detailed info would be great ^^

ps: im using a sony dvd writer

You don't need an IDE driver to install if the Bios is set to IDE. You only need a driver if the Bios is set to AHCI (or whatever). You can set it to ide, install your os, and go. If at some point you would like to set it to AHCI, you can plug the drive into the other SATA controller (intel), and set the Jmicron controller to AHCI. Then in windows, install the AHCI drivers. Reboot, plug the hdd back into the Jmicron controller and you should be all set.

I just did this last night, except I was installing the drivers for the Intel controller, instead of the Jmicron controller. It worked flawlessly. The Hdd booted from either controller.

Hey, my brother just bought a P5B standard and we're connecting it all up

Everything works untill we connect the hard drive and DVD Drive, at which point, the computer boots, nothing loads, there are no beeps, and it turns itself off and on again, and just stays like that doing nothing.

Anyone know why this is happening?

Can anyone confirm of the P5B Deluxe supports quad-core Kentsfield processors at this time? I swear I've seen rig sigantures with people using them, and the product specs say it supports it, but I want to confirm.

Also, I know you can OC to 1333MHz FSB, but will you be able to drop in a 1333MHz FSB Core 2 Duo and have it work natively? Maybe with a BIOS update?

Thanks

I'm ready to pull the trigger on a P5B Deluxe (paired with a E4300 or E6300). I've noticed discussion on the P5B-E about a certain hardware rev of the board which is undesirable to get, I am wondering if there is a HW Rev on the P5B Deluxe I would not want, what is the desirable HW rev for the P5B Deluxe?

Thanks

after reading through soooooo many posts and forums.. iv thought of the following - can it work?

make jmicron floppy

set bios 1st boot to cd, and jmicron to ide

start install xp press f6 with floppy in.

continue~

after load, download latest driver of jmicron : ftp://driver.jmicron.com.tw/jmb36x/Win2..._Vista/JMB36X_WinDrv_WHQL_R1.17.11.rar

install and restart, open bios and set jmicron to AHCI

reboot and all set

[sata hdd on intel chipset and dvd writer on jmicron ide]
