I've got a single 400GB Seagate SATA but it's weird that when I run the tests on different partitions I get different speeds. Still I'm confused as to why it's slow. My friend said because my power supply isn't enough.

How did yo manage to get the system to boot when you changed the IDE to AHCI? I don't have the JMicron drivers loaded and I just get a "Disk Error". I've got one drive that's SATA but I want to use AHCI on it. I have no idea how to get the AHCI drivers loaded on there correctly.

Thanks.

You need to unlplug the boot drive from the current intel controller, and plug it into the Jmicron controller.

Change the intel controller from IDE to AHCI in the bios. Boot into windows (since the Jmicron controller is bootable)

Install the drivers for the Intel controller (windows will detect the new hardware).

Shutdown. Plug the booting HDD back into the intel controller. Boot into windows as expected.

My question is this, it seems that running in AHCI mode actually hurt performance, since every review I read online seems to say that NCQ is slower than running with NCQ off. Does anybody really think running in AHCI mode is better? I am currently running in AHCI mode, and am thinking about switching it back to IDE.

Also, does anyone know, the Intel Storage Matrix utility states that my 36 Raptor supports NCQ, but the WD website says that it does not, so who knows.

I have 2 problems I couldn't figure out.

1) my "power" icon keep appearing on my task bar system tray every time I restart the computer. I set it to "Home/Office desktop" and I uncheck the "always show the icon on taskbar" every time but when I restart, it will come back.

2) my soundmax volume every time will reset to zero after a restart.

The 2 problems are similar but don't know if they are related. It seems like it just won't remember the settings.

thanks for any help.

Dizzymon you have the drivers in the disk, and also you can download in the Intel website.
Just download the ICH8R drivers.
I used IDE and switched to AHCI and the system booted and Windows found the drivers and installed and voiula!

Hello,
I just setup a new system but it keeps beeping (one beep) every time I startup the system. I tried removing the 2 IDE HDDs to see if that was the problem but after I removed them it still did the same thing.

I looked in the manual and it says that beep once = keyboard controller error, refresh time error or no master drive detected.
But I don't know how to fix this problem.
If someone could help me with this I would appreciate it.

My configuration is the following..

MOBO: P5B-Deluxe BIOS 1004
CPU: Core 2 Duo 6420
Mem: 2GB OCZ PC6400
GPU: Radeon X1650XT
HDD1: WD 36GB connected on SATA1
HDD2: Maxtor 80GB IDE master
HDD3: Maxtor 250GB IDE slave
DVDR: Asus connected on SATA3
DVDRW: LiteOn connected on SATA4

I have the sata configuration set to: IDE
should I change this to AHCI?

Can you get into the BIOS. If so, does it detect any drives?

It does. I'm using that heatsink with this board.

Sorry forgot to mention. I have WinXP running with no problem. Although I find the bootup a bit slow. It takes about 10 secs to go from windows loading to the windows login screen.
I also ran Prime95 for 7hrs with no problem.
I just find this a bit annoying.

You installed the ICH8R drivers after you have booted into windows? I gotta try that. I thought you had to do it during the bootup.

Yes I did that. I installed the drivers in Windows and then I changed in the BIOS to AHCI. Booted up fine, Windows found the drives, and etc.

Give it a try.

I have the same memory/board you do... have you been able to use faster timing settings? I never messed with the settings under 4-4-4-12 (tfrc, trrd, etc.); they are all stock.

Thanks for any info

graysky,

It is not worth it. Probably you will have to push too high on the voltage in your ram.
Actually depending on the application you are using you will get worse results than running your ram 4-4-4-12.

I've installed Windows 2000, and then installed all the drivers off the CD (using the InstALL thing) and what happened is that one of the two CD-ROM drives that were connected to the lone IDE connector on the board have disappeared. When booting up, the JMicron BIOS still sees the two CD-ROM drives, but when it boots into Windows, it only sees one. One is set to master, the other to slave. Before installing the drivers, however, I was able to see both drives. What happened?

Phoenix97,

Are you using RAID?
If you are not using it, try to remove the drivers from the JMicron.
Just install them if you are using RAID.
Many people had problems with it.

Alright, I removed the JMicron driver and replaced it with the Standard IDE controller driver. The other CD-ROM has now appeared again. And still, the burst transfer rate is about 27.7MB/sec, which is adequate for 18x-20x DVD burning.

Hey guys I just ordered the open box OEM P5B (regular) that doesn't come with any accessories. Will I need the Q-Connector to attach the power switch, reset, etc to the board? or can I do without it?

You don't need them. They are only an intermediate connection that allows you to keep all those wires plugged into a small block even if you have to unplugg the entire block from the motherboard. It is convenient if you unplug everything from your board regularly, but if not, you won't even notice that you don't have them.

Hi,
I hope nobody has asked this before. I couldn't find any results when i searched. I am having a weird problem. My computer doesn't boot in dual channel mode. Meaning when i have the Ram in the two Yellow slots it doesn't boot. and it doesn't boot in the 3rd(2nd yellow) or 4th slot(2nd black) when i place a ram in those slots individually. And i have been thru 3 motherboards and 3 pairs of ram sticks by now. But i haven't changed the processor. So i am thinking that the processor has some issue with this so i am planning on ordering another one to see if that solves the problem. Cause otherwise i don't know what can be wrong. And i haven't fixed the memory timings and it didn't help. I don't if i need to change something in the bios relating to the processor or something. I need HELP!

Is anybody running this board with 8GB of ram? I'd like to fill it up completely while prices are at rock bottom, but I'm unable to find any references to people doing the same successfully. If you're running 4x2GB, please stand up and be counted won't you?!

OK - here we go!

I'm a bit of a newbie overclocking these new boards...where should I start? Everything is just set to Auto except for the FSB.

Config:
P5B Deluxe, latest BIOS
e6600 @ 345 FSB = 3.1GHz
2x1GB Super Talent 667
Gigabyte 7600GT
WD SE16 250GB (system)
2x 150GB Raptors (for Video work, will be RAID-0)
LiteOn SATA DVDRW
Seasonic S12 430W
Antec P180
4x Nexus 120mm
Thermalright SI-128 (can't quite get the last clip down...likely a broken clip on the Thermalright, but the sucker is definitely on, its just not perfect)

CPU TEMP - 39-41 idle at 2.4GHz, 49-50 idle at 3.1GHz

Setting it at 350 boots but it seems to depend on if I "creep" up to it or not (i.e. 345 reboot, 346 reboot, etc).

But now I'm in Windows XP, and 345 is stable, and jumping to 350 won't boot. Where should I start in trying to clock higher?

First, disable speedstep, speed spectrum and EIST or whatever it's called (functions to throttle to save power). Second, set all your voltages/memory timings manually, AUTO will ramp them up with the OC and cause problems. What you want to do is set your memory to it's specified timings and voltage (should be able to find it on the mfg's website). If your memory isn't getting enough voltage, it will not boot at higher FSBs. FWIW your memory is only spec'd to DDR2-667MHz which means FSB of 333. However, if you relax the timings it will go farther (e.g. if it's 667 @ 4-4-4-12, relax it to 5-5-5-15 and try that).

You will want to increase your VCore voltage as you overclock, and possible VFSB and VMCH. Run Orthos to load test in WinXP.

Good luck.

Hi,

I have just added 2x1G ram to my P5B to a total of 3G. However, in Windows it shows only 2.5G. Any idea why?

Here's what I have:
Corsair Value Select PC2-5300 2x1GB DDR-667
Corsair Value Select PC2-5300 2x512MB DDR-667

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I can't get my system stable with 2 sticks of memory. With 1 stick of memory the system is stable.

my system:

Motherboard: Asus P5B (plain vanilla), 1202 BIOS
Memory: 2x Corsair 1GB 800MHz DDR2 (CM2X1024-6400)
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6320

I've tried different memorytimings, speeds, voltages, slots... but nothing. Most of the times the system wont even reach the bios before it freezes, other times it will work for some hours in windows before it suddenly reboots/freezes.

I got no idea what to adjust. Has anybody tried this memory?
