I just bought a Q6600 to plug into my P5B. Prior to doing so, I upgraded the BIOS to the latest revision. My problem is, I can't LOWER the multiplier. It's stuck at 9x. I want to run at 8x400, but if I set the FSB to 400, it boots at 3.6 GHz, despite the 8x multiplier being set. This used to work on the old revision of the BIOS I had (1102 I think), but that revision doesn't support the Q6600 G0 stepping. Is this a known issue? If so, is there a beta BIOS I can use? Or am I stuck waiting for Asus to fix this?

TIA!

Eventhough BIOS shows 3600 on POST, CPU-Z reports 3200 in windows.

Ok, so it's just mis-reporting it? I run FreeBSD, so I don't have anything like CPU-Z to report the actual system configuration. Although I suppose I could try running it in WINE lol

P5B Deluxe Wifi

My PC boots by itself after about 60 seconds in Hibernate or Standby. I can find nothing in the BIOS WAKE options that is enabled. It did NOT do this before.

The boot is fine, perfectly normal, as if I pushed the power button.

It does NOT boot if I put it in Shutdown.

I have a USB keyboard (Saitek Eclipse II - no WAKE functions) and a USB headset. I have tried unplugging both of these.

There is an earlier posting here:

I am thinking my USB is on 5vSB because the LED on my headset stays lit if the PC is in hibernate, standby or shutdown.

Is there a way to change this? Should I? What will it do/damage?

Nope, dmesg in FreeBSD reports 3.6 GHz even if I set the FSB to 400 with a (lowered) 8x multiplier. Definitely a BIOS bug. If I set it to 7x with a 457 FSB (to hit 3.2 GHz), it shows 4.113 GHz. So it's not just reporting it incorrectly.

Anyone else having this problem?

Trying to decide what is the best route to take from here.. My system was fine then just died out of the blue the other day... Now it won't post no matter what I do. At first the fans wouldn't even spin, so I got another (used) PSU... Now the fans occasionally will spin when I power on, but not every time... I don't have any spare parts to swap in and out to try and figure out what fried/died... Any suggestions?

Please Help - Cannot get Wireless to Work

It seems as if the install went OK, but I cannot get an internet connection. Here is what it shows:

Connection
- My SSID
- Speed 54.0 Mbps
- Duration 10 hours.....
- Signal Strenght Excellent

Activity
- Packets Sent = 384,000
- Packets Received = 0

Under Properties > Internet Protocol > Properties
- It shows Use the following IP Addresses and an IP of 192.168.0.1 and Subnet of 255.255.255.0, but there is nothing for the Default gateway. It also shows blank data for the DNS server addresses.

I compared this to my laptop that is running just fine on the network and I found that its wireless is configured for Obtaining an IP address and DNS servers automatically.

If I tell the IP Properties TCP/IP to select this info automatically, then then the connection says I have limited connectivity.

I went back to my setup for the ASUS Wlan and do not see anywhere for selecting automatic IP and DNS addresses.

I have also disabled WZC in services.msc

I have also removed and reinstalled the ASUS program from the ASUS website.

There are no issues in Device Manager.

I am really stumped and would greatly appreciate help and insights.

Does your system not post when it's hooked up to a monitor/LCD using a DVI cable? Mine posts most of the time but no video once in awhile. It's very random but it happens once in awhile.

Everything runs smooth as silk on Win2003 eval. Only things left are mobo and video card. The video card will come next after I've saved up enough forone.

Not sure but it may be because you have the controller set to IDE in the bios instead of AHCI mode.

"AHCI Configures the SATA controller to AHCI mode. Advanced Host Controller
Interface (AHCI) is an interface specification that allows the storage driver to
enable advanced Serial ATA features such as Native Command Queuing and
hot plug."

There is more reading on the Intel Web site about AHCI mode.

Well I am about to break down and buy a new board, and definitely from another manufacturer.. sheesh... I rma'd my non-posting p5b deluxe wifi/ap and two weeks later they sent me a plain used p5b deluxe in return, trying to pass it as a wifi (it said wifi on the sheet, but was just a used looking deluxe, and they didn't even put the wifi pieces on there). After a few days, maybe a week, this replacement deluxe board began random reboots and when it reboots it loses all its bios settings... I began a second rma and they are telling me that they "don't have any in stock". They won't give me any indication what it is they don't have in stock (whether its the deluxe or the wifi version, or both), or what they are going to send me if I send my board in...

I'm thinking of purchasing a P5B PLUS, with the recommended memory from NewEgg:
CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit TWIN2X2048-6400C4

But what processor??? I'm considering a Core 2 DUO E6600 (1066 FSB) or the faster E6750 (1333 FSB)

Oddly enough the faster chip COSTS LESS! on NewEgg - so it should be a no-brainer.
But... I've read that support for the 1333 FSB is BIOS version dependent.

Who knows what version of the BIOS I will get when I purchase the board - probably NOT the latest.

I'm worried that if I go for the higher speed CPU, I may be stuck in that it won't boot until
I update the BIOS, and I can't update the BIOS unless I install a lower speed CPU to
perform the BIOS upgrade (which I don't have). Seems like a 'Catch-22' situation here.

Am I worried un-necessarly?

(Win-XP in case you were wondering)

I am NOT sure, but I think it will boot, it just will not boot in the right speed and it will not recognize the CPU model correctly.
But as I said, I am NOT sure.

And another mobo is out of question? If you can afford I think getting a mobo with a P35 chipset would be better. I think you can find a P5K or other brand with about the same price.
You will get a little better performance, and support for Penryn.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I think that I was hung up on getting a motherboard with a parallel port on the motherboard (I intend to do hardware interfacing with it occasionally) but after some thinking I would probably be better to take your advice and get the latest chipset.

I'm now looking at the ASUS P5K-V which has a G33 / ICH9 chipset.
and will natively support the 1333 FSB.

Price is only a few dollars more which will be more than compensated by the less expensive (and faster) E6750.

I can always get a Parallel port on a PCI card if I really need it.

It also has built in video which I may end up disabling it since motherboard video is typically sub-par. (P.S. I'm not a gamer, but I do want to watch video)

My research indicates that the G33 is very similar to the P35. This chip supports the video.
Comparison P35 vs G33">http://www.neoseeker.com/Artic...arlake_p35-ds3r/3.html</a>

It also uses a heatpipe for cooling --- any real benefit for cooling - or just looks cool?

On the downside... what's the deal with the placement of the IDE connector? It's WAY far from where you need it to be.

I want to use my existing IDE HD and a DVD burner - I seem to recall that putting them on the same cable is not ideal. I havn't seen any NEW motherboards with TWO IDE connectors.

comments?

Hey BrianH,

BTW, welcome to AT!

Well, first of all let me just ask you one question, why are you looking at the P5K-V while the P5K since you may disable the video? Any specific reason, or feature that the P5K-V has that the P5K does not? Because the P5K is cheaper. But anyways...

About your questions...

The heatpipe is not just cosmetic, it really helps. It only will not help if you use a BTX case, that you will have to build the mobo up side down.

About the IDE, since Intel dropped the IDE support in the ICH8, manufactures had to put third party IDE controllers, which most of them use JMicron. And put only one IDE port. And the ICH8, ICH9, and probably the future southbridges from Intel will only support SATA.
Yeah I must agree with you that Asus has not done a good job with the design of the mobo.

But you might check other P35 mobo manufactures, Abit IP35-E uses the same chipset, has a better placed IDE port and it is cheaper than the Asus. But you will loose the heatpipe, what it is not all that bad at all.

Hope this helps you!

Thanks for the tips Rafael...

Why the P5K-V over the P5K...?

It's $139.99 for the P5K-V vs $134.99 for the P5K. (Newegg)

So essentially that $5.00 pays for motherboard video.

I want my PC to be as quiet as possible, so motherboard video means no additional video card fan.

Ok... I've seen fan-less video cards, but it still generates additional heat that needs to be vented.

Motherboard video just might be good enough for me.

But if I find that I'm unsatisfied with its performance, I have the option of adding a real video card later.

I'll look at the Abit too.

I see now!
Because you said you may disable the video.
But I understand what you are aiming for.
You might check other manufactures and see the design of others G33 or even G35 mobos.
So go for it!

hope I helped you!

Hi, I've got a very strange problem with my P5B Deluxe. I've been at it for a year trying to find a solution and I'm giving up hope.

Basically it has to do with dual monitors and a Sapphire X1950XT video card.

Whenever I boot up the monitors do a weird flashing thing back and forth, and one will be mostly blue and the other mostly red. It's really hard to describe so here's a video:

http://www.darkmatter.ca/flicker.avi

No flicker with only one monitor. And the very strange thing is we have 8 or 10 computers in the office with mostly the same config and they ALL do it, every single one.

Once the computer boots into some other graphics mode it seems to be fine, it's just in a text mode, or some lower resolution graphics modes (like booting from an Ubuntu live CD).

I've tried everything I can think of.. different power supplies, updated motherboard BIOS, playing with the BIOS settings, emailing Sapphire, etc. Since they all do it it can't be a hardware flaw.

Any ideas?

I can confirm it's the video card. I borrowed a friend's 1600 and the studdering problem disappeared. Now just to wait and pounce on a 8800GT.

hi i have the vanilla asus p5b and i want to get the Transcend aXeRam 2GB Kit (2x 1GB), TX800QLJ-2GK. specs: 240PIN, DDR2 800, Unbuffered DIMM, 64Mx8, 4-4-4-12 at 1.8V at 800MHz ... but i have a few things im confused about especially in the manual.

(nb:references to vanilla p5b userguide are to first ed 2006, edition # found on pg ii)

1) first of all, will this ram be suitable?
2) is it safe to leave my generic brand ddr2-667 1gb stick in there, and how do i place the new sticks in (yellow-yellow or adjacent yellow-black)?
3) since this is ddr2-800 and also CL4, on pg 2-14 of the userguide, it says it will be downgraded to ddr2-667, and that i have to adjust the memory timing manually, how do i go about doing this?
4)^^ do i have to go to jumperfree config and change the dram frequency to ddr2-800?
5) i noticed on pg 4-22, under northbridge config, it has dram timing config, is this where i would set the settings 4-4-4-12?

can anybody help me please.

First of all, welcome to AT Forums!

1 - You could check the QVL in Asus website, and check if the manufacture of the RAM is listed. If not listed it does not mean that this RAM is not compatible with the mobo. I am 95% sure that it will work with the P5B. You might just have to set some settings in the BIOS.

2 - I would test the 2 Gb kit alone and see if it works as it is rated. And then later started the complex part of adding the generic 1 Gb stick.

What the manual advise you is that if you running different RAM sticks, all the ram will run at the lower speed rated stick. So if you mix your DDR2-800 with your DDR2-667, the DDR2-800 will run at the speed of DDR2-667.

So you got 2 choices to achieve:

Overclocking the DDR2-667 stick to DDR2-800 speed, or underclocking the DDR2-800 sticks to DDR2-667 speed.

Underclocking would be the easier, since if you leave all the system in AUTO, it should run the system normally and choose the lowest speed of the RAM in the system. You might have to set up some settings manually in the BIOS.

Overclocking is more complex, and seems that you are not used to it. So I recommend reading some articles about it, because it involves some risks doing it.
But basically what you would have to do it, is to set the memory to run @ DDR2-800 speeds, and probably loose the timings and increase the voltage the RAM a little bit.

So, sumarizing it up:

Easiest - Run the the 2 Gb DDR2-800 only.
Easy-to-Moderated - Run the all 3 Gb @ DDR2-667.
Hard - Run the all 3 Gb @ DDR2-800.

Good luck!

thanks for your reply

yep i've checked the QVL list on asus, which is a very short list, nevertheless lots of other guys on here have ram that is not from this list either. i think i will get the 2 gb kit and sell off the 1gb stick i have at the moment (o/c sounds to difficult and could stress the generic brand ram).

running only the 2x1gb sticks, do i just put them in and boot up?
it says in the manual that "due to chipset limitation, ddr2-800 with CL4 will be downgraded to run at ddr2-667 at default setting. if you want to operate at lower latency i have to adjust the memory timing manually" therefore it sounds like if i leave the settings as they are and boot up i will only have ram running at ddr2-667 and at CL4. correct? or does it mean it will run at CL5 and ddr2-667?

"so to adjust the timing manually"
a) in the bios under advanced > chipset > northbridge config > it has dram timing config, is this where i would set the settings 4-4-4-12 or is this auto-detected?
and b) also under the bios advanced > jumperfree config > dram frequency config, is this where i would change it from auto to ddr2-800? or do i have to do both of the above?

sorry if these question sound stupid, i'm just confused about the part where it says "due to chipset limitations ....ram with ddr2-800 and CL4" which applies directly to me.

edit: all i want ia to get the maximum out of the ram at it's recommeded standard settings (ie no under/overclocking) of ddr2-800 and CL 4-4-4-12, thanks,.

Wise idea!

If you leave the settings in the BIOS in AUTO, it will do what the manual said. It will set the memory to run @ DDR2-667 and probably will run the SPD timings.
But you can set memory to run @ DDR2-800 and leave the SPD timings or set it manually where you pointed in the BIOS.

As long as you set just the memory to run @ DDR2-800, you will be running your system assynchronous. FSB 266 or 200 Mhz and your memory @ DDR2-800.
So you just change the memory settings and leave the FSB alone.
If you change the FSB you will be overclocking the whole system.
You can do this, it is not really that complicated, but it will require some reading first.
And then you will take the full advantage of your memory that you are buying.

Good luck!

Rafael
