Use my ram...the g.skill 2x2GB DDR2-1000 kit (5-5-5-15). i got mine for $80 or $85 (cant remember), and its taken my Q9450 to 450FSB (2.66Ghz to 3.6Ghz) without any issue.

also, im thinking if i should upgrade my bios from 803 to 1102/1201 whatever it is..wait a second what the hell? it was on asus' site like 10 minutes ago and now its gone! it only has up to 803..

Thank you for your reply. I have the 803 BIOS and didn't know of a newer one. So if I understand correctly I should make sure the CPU Cores don't get over 60 degrees Celsius?

pengo: Thanks for your suggestions.

secretanchitman: I appreciate your advice. I am sure your ram works fine but I was wondering if this might suit me better from newegg.com G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820231144

1. It is recommended by Asus's manual for this mobo
2. It is 2 gigs total which is what i want for XP

What do you think?

tr1kstanc3: I would get your recommendation but XP really won't see the full four gigs and Asus recommends less than 3 gigs in the manual. Also what software application currently out there would really need that much ram running *XP*.

Again thanks all !!!

yes you are correct. windows xp professional (32bit) will not see the full 4GB of memory. on my particular system it shows up as 3.25GB in system properties. the price of ram is so cheap that it made economical sense to upgrade to 4GB of memory despite the memory allocation issues with a 32bit OS. in the future when 64bit OS becomes mainstream then you will see the full benefits of the memory. i was making a recommendation based on value and future upgrades/OS.

good luck with your choices.

You make some great points especially about future upgrades and the better buy is currently 4 gigs instead of 2,... $85.00 verses $60.00 respectively.

Thanks!

I have used a variety of forums before but on this forum how do you get the name and quoted text of the person you are responding to to show up in that fancy bracketed box thingy. My previous post didn't quite fly the coup.

Okay now for my embarressed emoticon

haha thats okay...takes a little bit of getting used to when you're brand new to these forums!

on the topic of memory, i was actually considering buying two kits of 2x2GB for a total of 8GB...but then i realized that every time i use vista (i have vista ultimate x86 and x64), i ALWAYS revert back to xp (thats another issue entirely) and i dont really have many programs and uses to use 8GB.

same thing goes for laptops, some manufacturers include a 2GB stick and a 1GB stick for 3GB, but why not just include 2x2GB? it just makes more economical sense and even though most new laptops come with vista x86, that small extra bit of ram (3.25-3.5GB as opposed to just 3GB) will definitely help since vista has much steeper memory requirements/use more memory. oh well, im not in charge but whatever haha..

Likely I will be buying ASUS P5Q MB, probably Deluxe and I want to use the RAID 1 (Mirroring feature) of the Drive Xpert hardware built into this MB. I know the HDDs (mine are WD 640 GB) have to be set up as "data disks". Does this mean I need to have a 3rd drive as the boot drive?

I'd really prefer just to have the 2 drives and I guess after the first one is formatted and the OS installed, I'd like to have everything, OS and all the data I would subsequently add to the drive (pix, docs, etc) all mirrored to the second drive--such that if the first one failed, I could just boot off the other one and still also have all my data.

One poster I read (maybe on newegg) said something about formatting the first drive on one of the regular SATA ports and then plugging it into one of the orange Xpert SATA ports and then putting the second drive into the second orange Xpert SATA port and all would automatically be mirrored.

SO, I need help, please, from someone who has actually used these ASUS "Drive Xpert" ports and knows and can explain the sequence and correct way to achieve what I looking for.

Many thanks in advance.

You know I said it before almost two years ago now that i wasn't going to touch Vista (Vista: a far reaching mental view) with a ten foot pole. I will consider Windows 7 when it comes out but I have three networked computers (CAT5, MIDI and Lightpipe cables) running XP that I have built for my business and have had almost flawless performance. I run a multimedia company and need raw performance especially with recording digital audio with lots of plug-ins. XP screams and is stable for me to the core (no pun intended). I passed on Millenium too. Sorry Vista folks and I understand the concept of different strokes for different folks. I will pass on the eye candy though, thank you very much.

Ughh! I just read a rumor that newer motherboard bios' are being written more for 64 bit Vista with 32 bit legacy as more as an after thought. Any truth to that do you think? How is your P5Q Deluxe currently running under XP 32, 64 and/or Vista 32, 64? Anyone care to comment? Problems, issues, comparative analysis, etc. Thanks!

are you talking about the newer bios' for the p5q deluxe, or in general for every mobo?

i dont think there is any truth to that. if at all, they are tuning bios' to be stable in all sorts of O/Ses and configurations...

OLpal - vista sp1 is fine to use, but for me, i stick with xp cause its tried and true and again like i said in my earlier post, i ALWAYS end up reverting back to xp after a fresh install of vista. there isnt anything wrong with vista, but i just like xp way better and because of that, ill probably end up skipping and going straight to windows 7.

How about the 1201 bios for the p5q-e is anyone running it & having good or bad experience with it !!
My stuff all came but a couple small parts missing parts & egghead rec.d i call manf !!
This will slow down my build !!

Also on the cpu 4 pin or 8 pin power plug, have read where some rec'd using the the 8 pins.. Is there a set rule of thumb for this.. i think it's called the EPS/atx power connecter 8 pin.

From what you all say; stay away from windows flash of bios.. don't understand the memory stick method.. so i guess most of you still use the 3.5 floppy method.. I'll have to go to Asus site & read up on their procedure !!

I have plugged my psu into both the plug near the sata ports and the one towards the back near the cpu. No problems...

It takeas the 8 pin connector EPS and of course the 24 pin. It comes with half the 8 pin covered with a black plastic plug but it pops out.
Flashing via USB stick is almost the same as a floppy, unzip the file to the usb stick, reboot to bios, and you can flash it within bios with EZFlash which is actually In the bios I'm running on bios 803 with good luck so far.

Thanks Big Lar
Have you ever read an article [that i might be able to reference] on this EPS/ATX 8 pin plug !! As i build systems for friends & have never used it or questioned it , cause like you said there is generally a black plug covering the 4 not to use !! i just figured it was for future design or upgrade !!
I'd also like to find out if this 1201 bios is a final, & is stable & safe !! as i'd like to flash before i start installing all my software !!
I'll check out some more on this USB flashing, sounds cool !! Bios flash was main reason i insist on people putting 3.5" drives in !!
Ol'Pal

ps; as soon as i get my missing case standoffs & screws for mounting , i can get going on my build !! Murphys law is biting me in a-s !!
also trying to get ahold of zerotherm for a fan mounting bracket & missing anti-vibration tape strips for fan install on CPU cooler !! neat look'n cooler, the zen 120
