Thanks, that sounds like a plan...

Anyone else finding the Asus hardware RAID solution to be painfully slow?

Hey Big Lar or anyone..

As the BIOS file won't fit on a bootable formated floppy !
I see i'm going to have to use the USB to flash my BIOS newest ver. 1306
All i have is a new SAnDisk 4gig usb flash drive !!
It has a bunch of programs on it from sandisk !!
Can i leave them on there & just copy the ver. 1306 bios to the usb ????

Reboot with that usb & bios inserted
Hit ALT & F2
tools menu to EZ Flash2

Thanks Ol'Pal

It takeas the 8 pin connector EPS and of course the 24 pin. It comes with half the 8 pin covered with a black plastic plug but it pops out.
Flashing via USB stick is almost the same as a floppy, unzip the file to the usb stick, reboot to bios, and you can flash it within bios with EZFlash which is actually In the bios I'm running on bios 803 with good luck so far.

While the other 2 burners I want to connect to the extra 2 SATA ports provided with the SIL chip.

Is this possible, as the manual says the 2 SATA ports off of the SIL chip doesn't support ATAPI devices, on the other hand SIL website states that Sil5723 does support ATAPI devices [ http://www.sci-worx.com/products/product.aspx?id=103 | look under the 'Device Interface Features']; look's like ASUS might have gone cheap on a $200+ MB and deliberately left out ATAPI support, wither in BIOS or in real hardware!

So, how exactly am I to accomodate 5 HD & 3 optical drives, all SATA, on this MB; I have solved the same problem on a $40 ECS G31 mb with an add-in card but don't want to go the same route with a mobo that I've paid over $200 for & 8 SATA drives was the main reason for me buying this specific model!

Sorry I can't help you but do you absolutely need 5 Hard drives and 3 Optical drives all SATA? $60,000 question is why so many drives? No IDE drives I take it. Sorry but I cannot see you pulling this off.

1st - updated to 1306 BIOS from the original 06xx
2nd - downgraded to 0803 BIOS after having stability issues with all 4 RAM slots being populated

RAM = 2 X F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK / G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2-1066 (PC2 8500)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820231166

CPU = Q9550

PSU = Silverstone 850W Single rail

<*RAM was tested seperately, single module at a time & in pair with the CPU, PSU, ODD, HD, HD4850 in a ECS G31T-M without any of the individual components giving any kind of problems.

*Nothing was overclocked on the ASUS board, cept running the RAM @ DDR2-1066 speed

*RAM runs fine 2 modules at a time on the ASUS board, but was never able to test 4 modules with the 0803 BIOS because now I can't even use the MB with the "Chassis Intrusion Detected" warning!

I have 8 SATA drives in total & need them all!

5 HD's are as follows:
#1 - OS
#2 - VM-disk1
#3 - VM-disk2
#4 - VM-OS disk
#5 - SWAP / VM-SWAP disk

3 SATA ODD's, 2 are burners, the NEC/Optiarc for single layer disks, the Pioneer for dual layer disks & the Lite-ON is exclusively for scanning!

This board has 8 ports, but the problems are: the 6th SATA port, from the ICH10R, is placed so stupidly that a single Radeon HD4850 covers this port entirely, hence making it unusable! 2nd, the orange port from the SIL detects a drive attached to it, but the white port doesnt report a drive to the OS/BIOS.

Guess what, now I can't even use this board, every time I start it gets stuck on BIOS post with "Chassis Intrusion Detected!" message & will not post or boot into an OS. No amount of clearing the RTC/BIOS with batterry, jumper & power removed solved this problem. Even the Intrusion jumper on the MB is seated in its default location as I have not moved it.

I need immediate solution to this problem; as otherwise I have to return the board & lose $30 restocking fee + $$ shipping!

Another problem was installing 8GB [4 x 2GB] G.Skill DDR2-1066 ram, the board would be very unstable & reboot, yeah I bumped the NB & RAM voltages as necessary; even though I specifically asked & got a definite "You can populate all 4 RAM slots with 2GB dual sided DDR2-1066 [specifically the G.Skill] modules for a total of 8GB" from multiple forums, including here.

Now whenever I boot up the MB all I get is the fans & HDD's spinning but no video POST & the screen stays blank!

I would appreciate anyone helping me with the "Chassis Intrusion Detected" & if you can with the 8GB/4 RAM module problem. Thank you.

I use that, then after installing that, I plug the usb drive in and I unzip the bios file directly to the usb disk, it ends up to be my "G" drive. Then I boot to bios, go to tools and select EZFlash, then once in there highlight the rom file and click yes,etc...

So i can leave the U3 sandisk software on the USB flash & it'll be okay !!
& just boot into bios normally , by hitting delete ??
I understand your meaning that there is no need for a dos boot disk or any special formatting ???
Thanks for your Help Larry !! Ol'Pal Gary

It "Should" be fine, if not, EZFlash will throw an error as to file not found I would think. However if the info on the Sandisc is important to you, why not just copy the info to your Hard Drive, and then after you flash put it back? Seems like it wouldn't be too hard.

I have the P5Q Pro, couple of things.

#1 Ram didn't work at 1066, would boot but errors in Memtest86+
- Will work fine at 800mhz stock voltage OR
- Boosting DRAM voltage to 2.10 works at 1066.

#2 Windows BSODs instantly (even the boot disk) if I enable SATA AHCI.
- I have (only) the very first version of Xp Home (32 bit). Installed SP2 and SP3 and it still BSODs.. Does AHCI work in XP or do you need Vista/64 bit?

#3 Sound driver is missing "microphone gain boost" like my old Asus had (ALC850 or so) am I missing something or am I going to need a better (USB) microphone? It doesn't work at all unless I put the mic practically inside my mouth... Do USB mics work better?

Clarify "even the boot disk". Are you talking about the operating system installation bluescreening?

Yep, the XP install CD.

I set it to IDE mode for the install, (then SP2 then SP3...) then tried to reboot and change it but it BSODs a second after the XP logo screen pops up.

May be a moot point now because XP won't let me authenticate, says I've used the same key too many times... May have to spring for Vista64 instead - I assume this doesn't happen with Vista?

Do these temps seem ok for E8400, 40-42c idle (2ghz speedstep), 55-57c load (3Ghz)?
Measured with Speedfan (intel core temp).
Asus Probe reads 10-12c lower...

Perhaps AHCI requires SP2 in order to work properly... try slipstreaming SP2 with your Windows XP install CD, burn a new disc, and install from that. I didn't try with anything below SP2, but had no problem installing or using XP Pro SP2 and above using AHCI mode. Likewise with Windows Vista Ultimate x64. Just make sure that you install the OS using AHCI, because changing the mode between IDE and AHCI after OS installation isn't advisable.

easy RAID ports wont work in JBOD mode- only the orange SATAE1 port will work, as stated on page 4-49. Any one who has tested this can confirm?

The chassis detection may be circunverted by simply enabling it and keeping the detector wire always grounded to the chassi-it is worth a try. Otherwise its RMA ASAP.

The SATA port 6 that is backwards oriented and conflicts with the video card, but can still be used: get an angled SATA cable( if it is too short get a longer one- less than $5 !), install it BEFORE installing the videocard and bend it : it can run between the second and third DIMM slots or towards the south bridge. If this fails (hardly likely) you CAN use the second PCIE 16x slot for primary graphics, the only penalty is that it will run at 8x- a very small penalty for someone so determined to have 3( oh god 3?!!!!) optical drives.

"I have 8 SATA drives in total & need them all!

a dedicated SWAP/VM SWAP disk is great, but may i be crazy enough to dare to propose another disks setup for someone who soo fanatically demands 3 optical drives?

1-Use both easy raid ports for a RAID 0 OS drive, and put the dedicated SWAP drive ALSO on this partition- SWAP will be much faster on a RAID 0 than on a dedicated drive.
2-use an external drive for weekly/dayly backups of the drive image of this RAID 0- this way you will be able to rebuild the OS in less than an hour and ripe all the benefits of a RAID0 system drive
3-use the ESATA for one of your irreplaceable optical drives.

vista and AHCI work perfectly. xp and AHCI dont. geekdrew is right, you need to either have a floppy disk with the ICH10 drivers on it or slipstream sp2/sp3 and windows xp onto a blank cd.

Thanks, but after finally getting XP registered I think I'll just wait until I get my free copy of Vista to re-install (I had to call on the phone as it seems I've installed it too many times...) I'm supposed to get a free copy from that promo they did awhile ago.

Will AHCI really make that much of a difference? The drive (Samsung Spinpoint F1 1TB) already gets 125MB/s max / 94MB/sec average, in HDTach. In IDE mode.

I tried drive xpert superspeed (raid 0) with 2 WD 640 gb drives, but performance really sucks. I get like 77 mb/s average which is about the same as single drive.

i like my DFI Better.

However with DFI its a serious hit or miss. :\

Meaning you either have the best overclocking experience or the worst possible experience.

Anyhow i still need to play with GTL and crank down the voltage a bit, but heres the fsb on yorkfield.

I've never had that problem with this motherboard, but I've had that problem with numerous other computers -- I suspect that it has something to do with the optical media drive(s). Seems to happen more often on those computers that have multiple CD/DVD/BR drives, particularly if any of them use IDE rather than SATA.

Hey all.. Just switched over to P5Q from the DFI ( see sig ) ...

I still need to read through this thread, so I'm sure any questions I may have, may have already been answered ..

I'm still on XP pro - but getting ready to switch over to Vista 64 ..

I left all the voltages on auto and bumped the FSB to 401 --- running Orthos as we speak ...

It looks like auto bumped vcore to 1.29 from default of ~ 1.17 ...

I'm not going to worry about vcore as long as it stays below 1.36 ..

What I'm looking for feedback on - is that I have heard this board ( when on auto ) - might bump other voltages like ' NB ' higher than they need to be ...

Are there any recommendations for manually setting NB, SB etc. with FSB from 400 - 450 ?

Anyone here using any of the P5Q boards with E7200 CPU? If so, could you please advise your S-spec if known..

I'm wondering if there's a compatibility issue because there are two s-spec versions of this cpu

thanks
