I still need to read through this thread, so I'm sure any questions I may have, may have already been answered ..

I'm still on XP pro - but getting ready to switch over to Vista 64 ..

I left all the voltages on auto and bumped the FSB to 401 --- running Orthos as we speak ...

It looks like auto bumped vcore to 1.29 from default of ~ 1.17 ...

I'm not going to worry about vcore as long as it stays below 1.36 ..

What I'm looking for feedback on - is that I have heard this board ( when on auto ) - might bump other voltages like ' NB ' higher than they need to be ...

Are there any recommendations for manually setting NB, SB etc. with FSB from 400 - 450 ?

honestly, i just left everything on auto except for my vcore and vmem, and the board took me to 3.6Ghz from 2.66Ghz.

Hello all,

Just joined this forum, to be honest to ask the following question. But maybe I stick around longer (I could learn something ),

Well after having stored all the stuff on shelves for a couple of month (too busy at work), I'm finally putting together my P5Q de luxe based system, (with an E8500 I bought a few weeks before Intel dropped its price with 30%).

Now I have a simple question. I want to install 2*2 Mb of DDR2 memory (OCZ Reaper). In the rather small Asus manual I read:
"Its recommended to install the memory models from the yellow slots for better overclocking capability"

What are they saying here? There are 2 banks on the board, A and B, both having a yellow and black slot.
Should I put my 2 modules in the yellow slots, leaving black slots empty? I alway thought you must fill a complete memory bank... If I only fill the yellow slots, the banks will only be half full.

Nut I'm not an expert, every 5 years or so I configure a new PC, and each time thechnolgy has changed a lot.

Thanx
Ronald

Go ahead and put them in the yellow slots, that is what they mean. Good luck man I just tried to set up a p5q with the same ram and Im stuck in an infinite power up power down cycle (see the post a bit down the topic list)

Thanks for the answer. Is this the reason why they say a system can get a bit slower with all memory banks fulled up?

Sorry to hear your board won't start. Btw my last system was also Gigabyte based.

Have to say putting that processor on that 775 slot didn't feel very reliable. Everything is so small! Well, wel see what happens when I power up my system (in a day or two).

Reading through the posts, I keep seeing issues with AHCI and WINXP. I have downgraded MANY Dell laptops from Vista to XP, and this is a common issue.

If you would like to get AHCI working properly from the very first install, you will need to follow the instructions found:

Here

REM: You should only follow the instructions pertaining to AHCI.

It is VERY simple to slipstream in the Intel AHCI driver into your XP build CD. It only takes a few min, and once the image is built, you can reuse your media.

Another working hack is to install with SATA selected in the BIOS. Once XP is up and running, you install the Intel AHCI drivers, reboot, change BIOS to AHCI.

If you do not have the proper driver, you will blue screen, etc. Same as any other hardware.

I'm not sure if it's the EPU Engine, or the HDD, or the SATA controller, or the SATA cable, or whatever reason that occasionally caused the error "Unable to detect bootable device" (I forgot what exactly the msg was, but it's something like that) if I leave the computer on/idle overnight. After pressing the SATA cable and the power cable (sometimes need unplug/plug), then restart can go back to Windows. Anyone ran into the same situation before? I'm using XP, one drive, EPU at Auto, no OC. The drive is Seagate 640GB. I'm thinking to uninstall the EPU, and if the problem still exists, I'll get an WD drive. Any other suggestion? Thanks in advance!!!

Yea I'd like to know that too, primarily about the auto voltages for the mbrd, I don't like not knowing what the voltages are .........

Oh btw I have the Pro version.

I get an unknown device found in the device manager. Do I need to install the Asus Probe II for that, or the Asus Ai Suite? Or will either one of them work?

No I know its one of those programs that gets rid of it, I just can't remember which one...

All that Asus Probe does is probe the mobo sensors. It doesn't change any system hardware. I've only used the AI Suite once, but I'm 99% sure that it doesn't change any hardware either.

Not the EP power saving thingy your thinking of is it?
Won't be Asus probe.

Think my Xigmatek s1283 cooler will fit on this P5Q premium MB as it did on my Asus P5B-deluxe?

I'm using a P5Q Pro with a Q6700 @ 3.3GHz & 2x2GB Mushkin DDR2-800 (the 5-4-4-12 stuff).
I was wondering, since i'm overclocking, will adding 4 more gigs of the same ram affect (worsen, hinder, whaterver you wanna call it) my overclock (8x413)?
Thanks!

Very unlikely, though you might need a wee bit more NB voltage.

I run 8.5x465 w/ 8 GB Mushkin, which is a lot more stress (465 FSB) than your 413 FSB is.

Before that i had my QX6850 over 400 FSB w/ 8 GB, & before that, my Q6700 @ 8x442 w/ 8 GB 5:6 (DDR2-1061)

I quite like the P5Q in how it handles 8 GB

I envy your overclocks!
I could get 400x9 on mine, but it required a ridiculous amount of voltage.
I eventually "settled" on 413x8 @ 1.28v.
Do you think that the additional 4 gigs of ram makes a difference?

I just purchsed this MOBO - But originally got the Pro 7 cooler with it. Will be sending it back due to the fitting issue. Have replaced it with tha Akasa AK 965. Anyone forsee any problems?

Full new system to be built:

Akasa AK 965
q6600 processor
Crucial 4GB (2X2GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 Ballistix Memory
Antec three hundred case
Asus P5Q Deluxe mobo
Hiper 630W HPU-4M630-PE power supply (though am a bit over budget so tempted to go for the 580w and save £15).
Hiyatek 20-in-1 Card Reader With Fan Controllers and E-SATA Port, Audio in/out - 5.25" Bay
Plexus Hard Drive Black Plastic SATA Removeable Tray Caddy with Lock

All in for £430.

Any comments? Will this work or have I made a big mistake? Thanks!

Hey a fellow Brit, & you only live 40-50 miles from me too .

I'm running my Q6600 @3.35GHz & HD 4830 on a Antec TPII 430 & thier's still plently of spare power. The most I've seen my PC draw from the wall is 310w, that was running ATItool with 3D view on & 2x F@H SMP clients. So the 580w PSU will be plenty enough, unless you have some monster graphics setup in mind, what graphics card are you getting for it?
One small point though, going for the cheaper PSU means you have very slightly less future proofing from it.
Can't say I could answer you on the rest of your gear, I take it the RAM is on the qualified list?

Btw how much are you paying for the Q6600?

I paid £135 for the Q6600 which I thought was a good price. NEARLY went for the P5Q3 deluxe but didnt think the extra £15 was worth it as over budget already!!

Only using my old MSI NX7900 GTO PCI-E card as think its good enough for what I need for now. Hope it works!

That's a pretty good price , I don't know if you've noticed but prices have gone up recently, I'm sure at one point I saw Q6600s going for £120-125 at ebuyer but now their £150!, grx cards went up too .

I wouldn't imagine that a 7900GTO would be a power monster (btw never heard of that (GTO) model), although I'll defer to other more knowledgeable people.

Btw I'll bump a thread of mine about the P5Q which might be of interest to you.

Got myself a P5Q Deluxe motherboard when my P5W DH Deluxe died and I have some minor difficulties concerning oc on this board, it's has some new settings I'm not used too. ^^;

E6700 @ 3.52Ghz (350x10)
1.6000vcore
(yes my cpu needs lot of juice to run stable, had it up to 1.6750vcore on my old board but still the temp is around 40 degrees celcius)
Supertalent Pc6400 4x1Gb
4-4-4-8 841Mhz 2.1v

Is there any other voltage one should think about other than vcore and ram voltage?
On the old board I had to raise the mch, but I have no idea which one it is now.
Would like to be able to reach 3.6Ghz if possible.
