all the temps i've listed since first posting are open case in a 74~ F room with my ceiling fan on for extra circulation lol.

i'll take a look at the heatsink so see if it seems badly seated etc...

the screws on the backside of this thing that hold the fan and heatsink in place are tiny. I don't even have a screwdriver small enough to take these off!

100% certain. I was hoping there would just be push-pins, but instead they are tiny little screws.

I have an Asus A-45GA PSU to power my new motherboard. It has a small 3-pin connector on it that isn't documented, that looks just like the fan connectors on the chassis fans.

At first I didn't plug it in anywhere because I wasn't sure what it was for. But I tried to read up and from other references it seemed like it must be a fan monitor cable. So I plugged it into the P5W, into PWR_FAN1, and started it up again.

Straight away I could smell something burning, so I shut everything down. It doesn't seem like the mobo is damaged or anything, and the PSU still works too, but does anybody know whether the connector is in fact a fan monitor? Or was I supposed to plug it in somewhere else? What could I have blown on the motherboard?

Thanks!

The connector certainly sounds as if it's a fan monitor. Have you powered-up without the fan monitor wire connected? Are you certain the burning smell was the result of connecting this wire?

A retail E6600 should post fine with BIOS 0801.

Sometimes it hangs for several seconds before entering the Hardware Monitoring section. Are you sure it froze?

Also, the board will not post without any mem installed. Try booting with a single stick, if both sticks do not work.

Hm, this is a tough one. I'll just toss out a bunch of suggestions.

- You have your PSU properly connected? Both the 20+4 pin and 4 pin connectors hooked-up?

- Maybe try resetting the CMOS. This will involve removing the CMOS battery and then moving a jumper (see manual for instructions).

- You could also try removing and reseating the CPU (a pita, I know).

- Check that all cables and devices are properly connected. Reseat PCI cards.

- Turn off the PSU power switch and leave it off for several minutes to let the capacitors drain.

That's all I can think of, atm.

Hehe.

Any chance the computer you're now using has parts that you can try on the new rig? Like, the videocard, mem, etc.

I'm stumped. When you power on, the fans spin-up but no post? This sounds like exactly what would happen if you had an early version BIOS that does not support Core 2 Duo CPUs. But, you already managed to post once, before.

Do you have another LGA775 CPU that you can pop into the P5W DH?

good news phil =)

thanks for all your help/insight throughout today btw.

I ran over to Best Buy and bought another 500W PSU just to give it a shot, so that I wouldn't have to wait for one to be shipped etc...

And I am happy to report it is running well.
I came to the conclusion that it was probably the PSU and not the V.Card when I tried one last idea, which was disconnecting my other non-essential components (other HDDs etc) and seeing if the idle temp/load temps came down at all. Sure enough they did, by almost 10 C. So I figured it had to be a power issue.

Low and behold, its running fine now, load temp is around 65 C now. =)

ahhhhhhh i jinxed myself. right as I was typing that smiley face the computer beeped, ATI Control Panel throttled the card b/c it had hit 70 C. I'll probably just lower the core/mem settings a bit, and just be happy it all works.

I don't know that you needed a new PSU, at all. It seems obvious that you're having heat issues with the vidcard. I don't really understand why the vidcard would be throttled down when hitting 70C, as that is not all that hot for a GPU. It should work fine until it hits 80C or higher.

Bummer. It appears you have a Core 2 Duo compatible BIOS. Perhaps, the BIOS chip was damaged, or the BIOS somehow became corrupt. ASUS will overnight a BIOS chip to you for $15.

The 70 C figure was a guesstimate because by the time the screen loaded the Vcard surely had cooled down a bit, and the first reading I saw was 70 C.

Yeah the V-Card is still having overheating issues, I just ran the 3d View again in ATITOOLS with slightly lower core and mem settings, and it hit 110 C just before beeping. It's obvious this card runs really hot. I'm just surprised that mine runs so much hotter then the reviews of other people who bought it on newegg.

Sucks though, Newegg wants to charge me a restocking fee for returning the video card. $24.80 down the drain... sigh.

How long have you had the card, that Newegg won't RMA it for free?

In any case, exchanging the card is a good idea. Clearly, the GPU is not being properly cooled, either by a poorly mounted heatsink, or some defect.

I have no idea why your machine won't post, so I was just curious to see what would happen with another chip in there. Like I said, your symptoms are exactly what would happen if your BIOS version wasn't 0701 or higher. The fact that you had alread managed to post, before, suggests you had a compatible BIOS. Very odd.

If not a BIOS issue, it's possible that your PSU is toast.

it came in yesterday.

I don't know, I went through the RMA process on their website, selected defective as the problem, and elected to refund rather then exchange/repair. and thats when it let me know they'd be hitting me with the 15% restocking fee.

But I guess it's worth it, in order to get a v-card that WORKS properly.

Why not just exchange for another new card?

you mean exchange it for the same model card?

i figured I'd just avoid that model and get another.
