It's certainly up to you. But, if you like the x850xt, the odds of getting another bad card are quite slim.

You do have a point. I just hate not having a computer. And this would mean not having one for another week at the very least, while this video card is shipped to them, and they inspect it, and ship a replacement.

Being impatient myself, I certainly understand that. In your situation, I would probably try to find something else I liked, that was in stock and ready to ship.

i'll probably order this puppy here:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814161012

It's received great reviews (although my current problem card did too), and after mail in rebate will only cost me $6 more + shipping, and judging by the reviews, it runs rather cool, which gives me some peace of mind before buying yet ANOTHER part for this computer. Only bought 4 components initially (mboard, cpu, ram, vcard) and it looks like i'll end up having to replace 2 of the 4. Yeesh.

Looks good, but what other component do you need to replace?

I was counting the PSU I replaced tonight. Although from the looks of it, that might've not been necessary.

I've got 30 days to return it to Best Buy, so I'll probably give the other PSU (Antec True Power 2.0 550 W) I removed tonight another shot once the new video card comes in.

Straight away I could smell something burning, so I shut everything down. It doesn't seem like the mobo is damaged or anything, and the PSU still works too, but does anybody know whether the connector is in fact a fan monitor? Or was I supposed to plug it in somewhere else? What could I have blown on the motherboard?

Thanks!

The connector certainly sounds as if it's a fan monitor. Have you powered-up without the fan monitor wire connected? Are you certain the burning smell was the result of connecting this wire?

-phil

Yes, the first time I started up without it because I wasn't sure if it was a fan connector. Everything worked fine, but then after reading up, I felt fairly confident it was a fan connector and connected it and restarted. Immediately there was a burning smell which seemed to come from the PSU, even though the PC appeared to be starting up fine, but I shut it down str8 away. I disconnected the cable, restarted again, and everything was fine, no more burning smell.

So of course I'm too scared to plug it in again. Plus although the mboard is working, I am worried I have blown something that will bite me further down the line.

Yes, it works perfectly. PC2-6400 is the highest officially supported memory on this board. I've seen a lot people having trouble getting faster mem to work. In any case, PC2-6400 will run 1:1 at FSB 400. How much do you plan to o/c?

The P5W DH only accepts DDR2 mem.

PC2-4200 - DDR2-533
PC2-5300 - DDR2-667
PC2-6400 - DDR2-800

I recommend 2GB (2 sticks) of PC2-6400. Win32 seems to have trouble with anything more than 3GB, and I'm not sure this board likes 4 DIMMS. I'm not 100% sure about this last point. In any case, you probably don't need more than 2GB.

The fan monitor wire could have been badly installed. Try to powering-up once again, without the fan monitor connected. If you don't have any problems, or burning smell, you could probably keep it and just not monitor the fan. However, a PSU with any defects is one that I would promptly RMA.

so i read on the asus website :

4 x 240-pin DIMM sockets support max. 8GB DDR2 800/ 667/ 533 ECC and non-ECC memory

so ECC memory as well ..

oh my bad.. it's the deluxe version..

but ok.. my question remains.. will the 400Mhz of the ecc memory be sufficient for the e6400/e6600 or does it really need 533Mhz to be able to boot up .. ?

There are no memory issues with the P5W DH, as long as you use one of the following:

PC2-4200 - DDR2-533
PC2-5300 - DDR2-667
PC2-6400 - DDR2-800

You will need XP64 if you want to run more than 3GB. Also, as I said earlier, there *may* be an issue when trying to run 4 DIMMS, but I am not sure.

Thank you for finally answering this! I'm torn between the 6600 and 6700, I'm interested in squeezing every bit of goodness I can out of the RAM- that's why I've been asking. Is there any other well known memory kit that works better than the OCZ for this board? More overclock friendly, even if more expensive?

This board supports several memory dividers, so there's no need to get the crazy highspeed (expensive) memory, in order to significantly overclock. In terms of performance PC2-6400, many people are raving about G.Skill memory, but it's hard to find in North America. Mushkin and Corsair are also offering excellent products. Personally, I'd be happy with best PC2-6400 kit from any of these manufacturers. I chose the OCZ Platinums because my last kit was OCZ and they performed very well. I do not regret the purchase.

I've tried to run memtest with what I have read to be the best settings too eg. Hyperthreading(transport?) disabled, and disabling the legacy USB support too.

I'm about to call for an RMA; I'm sure I've seen people running this Corsair XMS2 6400 RAM with this board and chip (or at least a faster version of the same chip), and can see no further.

Incidentally, I could get to safe mode in Windows XP, but to try normally gives me a flash of a BSOD before restarting. Now when trying safe mode, it appears to hang at the loading(?) of JGOGO.sys...aaaaaaaaaaaargh, a Jmicron job? Getting sidetracked though...I guess the RAM is waht's creating this problem...

Just to confirm, the RAM has been found faulty. Should have the replacement soon.

A bit OT, but I am wondering if anyone knows of (or has encountered) a situation where good RAM has been damaged by a faulty board? I always try ground myself on the chassis, but I could have damaged it. The supplier hasn't confirmed, but I found one stick not functional, and the other showing errors!?

Read this:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=113837

I had to RMA a kit after one of my DDR2 dimms suddenly started to fail, after a few weeks of normal operation. I was quite confused and thought, like you, that maybe the mobo was somehow defective, and damaged the dimm. Then, I saw the above post. During that period of normal operation, I'm quite sure I removed the dimms a few times, without powering off the PSU. I've had the replacement kit for about a month, and haven't had a single issue.

Just a FYI. From what I'm seeing reading a few different website forums using this mobo and overclocking is that the Corsair and GSkill are the two most popular brands with good results. OCZ is a close third and I have seen some others using Geil and Patriot modules also. Alot of people are hitting a wall at 3.6GHz with the E6600 with the P5W DH Deluxe mobo on aircooling so be aware of that. E6300 & E6400 are getting between 3.2GHz - 3.4GHz before hitting the wall on air.

Does ASUS offer an adjustable multiplier option in bios for this board as it does for the P5B?

Not as of yet. For clarity's sake, though, the P5B-D BIOS only unlocks the multiplier downward. Nothing terribly exciting, in my view.
