Phile: sorry if this has been asked before, but the search function doesn't work. You told me fsb of 333, but I see no place to change the fsb. Are the built in OC profiles any good? Currently running the 30% one and i'm at 3.1ghz, dunno about fsb or mem speed/timings, but it's staying below 60c, after running orthos for a few minutes. Idle is in the 40s.

thanksmuch.

I've got OCZ Platinum Rev 2 6400 (OCZ2P800R21G), e6600, and this mobo. I feel completely lost as to what OC settings are best or how to find them. Any help available?

To start with 3.1Ghz would put you at about 345 FSB (3100/9 CPU multi = 344)
Run CPU-Z to see you settings. Check your voltage, and RAM settings.
I personally like to set the OC myself.
To manually configure your settings go to Jumperfree settings, and change AI Overclocking to manual. This will open ocing options.

Edit: I like to run Orthos at least 12hrs to test OC. Are you running Orthos beta?

Until the plan falls apart, I plan to cut a hole in the side of my case for a 120MM fan to blow down onto the NB/SB area.

The wires to the fan can sneak out a hole in the back where I used to have a SCSI port.

Finding someone to do a good job on cutting the rather sturdy side panel will be the tricky part...

PerformancePCs (performance-pcs.com) does mod work. They'll sell you a modded case or you can send them your own in and they'll do it. You'd have to check with them on pricing. It isnt cheap but it never is when you pay someone else to do it. Another downside is that you'll be without your case or its side panel till they can get it done and back to you. Their shop is in Florida. They have a very high reputation for quality work though.

I am hoping someone can help me with this weird issue.

Just put together a brand new machine with a P5WDH deluxe, bios 1401. I am using 3 Sata drives connected to Intel chip set. JMicron controller is disabled. Sony DVD-RW connected to primary IDE as the only device on the cable. IDE config in bios is set to RAID. Everything looks good in BIOS, all devices are detected.

I install Windows XP via the DVD-RW and everything installs fine and Windows boots no problem. However, no DVD-RW/CDROM is detected in Windows after install. All chipset drivers have been installed. Device manager does not detect the drive and it does not show in Disk Management or My Computer. I have already tried the UpperFilter/LowerFilters registry change. I have set the jumber on the drive to Master, CS, and removed it completely. Still does not detect in XP. Again this is a brand new XP install, SP2, all updates installed. NO other software installed.

I know it sounds like a Windows problem but I can't help to think it is MB related (a setting I'm missing). This is driving me nuts, any help would be appreciated. Other than that all is great.

Try using the 80 wire ribbon cable for the DVD drive - the one marked HDD. I can't think of anything else to suggest, atm.

That's the one I'm using. I may try the other one again though.

The CD-ROM labeled cable worked for me.

Something else slightly weird I've noticed, but maybe this is related to my video card (X1900XTX). When Windows loads, there are a few violent "flashes" as the screen adjusts. Anyone else seen anything like this? Definitely not a showstopper, but I've never seen it on another computer.

Those screen flickers have happened with my last 3 ATi cards - 9800pro, x800xl agp, x800xl pci-e. I don't know exactly why this happens, but it's normal.

Just replaced the cable with the CDROM cable. Same problem. Bios still detects it but Windows does not.

Also, I get the same flicker with my ATI card.

My thought exactly. Yes, I do. Interesting update. Same make different model. Windows detects it.

Now even more interesting, I originally had the drive that is not detected on the JMicron controller. Windows saw it fine. I wanted to move it because I figured I could eliminate some resources plus the cable has to stretch across the case and is in the way of everything impeding airflow and such.

So to recap:
1. Bios detects both drives on both controllers.
2. Windows installs with drive on Jmicron and Intel controller.
3. Windows does not detect drive after install on Intel controller.
4. Windows does detect drive after install on JMicron controller.
5. Windows does detect different drive, same make/different model , on Intel controller after install.

Maybe a firmware update is required for the drive not detected on Intel controller?

Very weird and I am not sure were to get a solution from. This particular drive will not work in Windows on the Intel controller.

Peculiar, indeed. I doubt it's a firmware issue, though. Is the problem drive brand new? If so, exchange that sucker.

Hello Folks,

I have joined recently and I have a problem in P5W not posting. I sure have read almost all the posts in this topic here but something is very peculiar with my build. First here is my specs...

Asus P5W DH/ Conroe E6400/ OCZ Platinum 6400 (phile has this also...great job phile)/
1x 250GB Western 3.0Gbs SATA/ Sapphire Radeon X1600XT PCI-E/
Antec Sonata II case with 450W/
SONY DVD ROM/SAMSUNG DVD RAM/
Mitsumi 7 in 1 with floppy/Microsoft Wireless Desktop.

Well, when I first assembled everything and found that the system will not POST. I got re-flashed BIOS chip from ASUS to re-flash and it did not work. So, I did an exchange-replacement on Motherboard with 1201 BIOS....re-built again and it still does not POST.

The processor, case and video fans spin up fine but there is no video and no POST beeps.

I have checked (three times) that the processor is seated correctly. Used AS5 with stock fan.

I have tried the RAM both singly and in pairs in every combination of slot.

I have removed the battery and cleared Cmos.

The current BIOS chip is 1201 which should be fine for Conroe 6400.

I have run out of ideas, don't have a 775 celeron to try and cannot really run to another Mobo exchange --how many is enough ;-(

Am I missing something here? Any help, insights, comments will be appreciated. I have asked local Fry's to check power or MOBO or CPU or RAM issues (awaiting their call .

Thanks for anandtech and helping folks here!

Here's another Q.

I have 3 external USB HDD's (yes, it's excessive). They must go into some sort of sleep mode when not being used, and when I boot the PC up after a several hour power off, it takes particularly long to boot up, since it detects the drives in POST. Is there any reason for this? Can I disable it somehow? I'm pretty sure my last PC did not do this, and the drives were always immediately available in XP, as soon as it loaded.

I'm about to take case apart and do AS5 mod to mobo, so if you don't hear from me soon, assume the worst. ;-)

Could be a PSU issue. Which PSU are you using? Do you have both the 20+4-pin AND 4-pin connectors hooked-up? If this doesn't help, maybe try booting with only one stick of memory.

Let me know if you need more suggestions.

This happens when I boot with USB storage devices connected, as well. Haven't taken the time to search for a solution, just yet.

i've tried overclocking and it gets way to hot imo. should I set the vcore to auto @ stock speed or bump it up an increment cuz of vdroop? i have it one increment up from default vcore now and it idles 36-37 degrees. i wouldn't mind getting it down another degree or two. what do you guys think?

An Antec slot fan plugged into my system caused the PSU to lock up, preventing booting. I picked up an Antec PSU tester at Circuit City and while playing with it found my problem...

Set it as low as your OC allows. Stock is up to 1.35, so you have it at 1.3625?

At stock speed my E6600/P5WDH is rock solid stable at 1.225 - the lowest available setting for vcore. Try a similar undervolt, your temps will drop quite a bit.

Thanks for the reply Phil.

I am using the PSU that comes with Sonata II...which is 450Watt SmartPower 2.0 ATX 12V V2.0 . Yes, I sure have both 20+4 (near floppy cable) and 4 pin near CPU hooked up.

I did try booting it with 1stick which is 1GB OCZon all slots (each time I had to bleed the power out - took out power cables, etc...). BTW, all items in my specs. were mostly from newegg/mwave.

I am right now at wits end so to speak...so any tips would help. I really hope it is the PSU or RAM and not the CPU (very unlikely). Getting two MOBOs received in random not POSTING is very very unusual and enervating right now....

Thanks again
