Well, I looked at that last night. Something (not at home right now) about using the CD or USB, but when there's NOTHING coming up when you turn on the power, the 'corrupted' message isn't coming up either to show any sign of life.Originally posted by: phile

That's why I think crash-free is semi-bogus, if the code that supports it can be killed/disabled by a bad flash. In my case, a bad flash that pretended it had been successful...
Edit: Talked to ASUS about new BIOS chips. $5 for shipping is going to get me two of the 1407 chips, which I was told I might be able to have flashed around here somewhere if I'm lucky, in case I NEED to use 1305 instead. Having a spare that's already flashed to a high-enough revision for no additional money sounded OK to me if 1407 does work.
If it turns out to be a CMOS problem, then somebody really needs to rewrite the loader so that it resets the memory itself if it sees bad data there. Just sitting there doing nothing until the owner does the required reset anyway is just lame...
I guess what I'm saying is, if there's a user-initiated sequence about CrashFree beyond inserting the CD or USB, I didn't see it. My computer does nothing on power-up, so the 'corrupted' message that signals the start of recovery doesn't happen.Originally posted by: phile

At least, it looked like all I was expected to do was insert the CD (which may not work for a C2D anyway) or the USB I did flash from, both of which I tried. If I missed some arcane part of the recovery process, please advise...

You have to boot with the P5WDH CD, and have either a USB device or floppy with the BIOS on it, renamed to P5WDH.ROM.

Two of them stay around 40-45ºC, while the third one goes from 67º-130ºC!
