PC probe doesnt display the temperatures accurately. You should download Core Temp to get more accurate readings. This also gives the temp in each of the cores seperately. It will probably give you a temperature closer to 40c, but don't worry as this is well within reasonable range.

The motherboard temperature I believe is displayed quite accurately and your temps are fine again (make sure they dont go above 60c). If you want a bit of simple cooling you can remove the caps from the Northbridge and Southbridge heatsinks, they are glued on and not too tough to remove (I threw mine away after as they were bent all to heck). They are there for show and serve only to get in the way of good cooling.

Hi. I am new to this board and new to the P5WDH. I have a couple of newbie questions and It would be great to get an answer to them.

Firstly the config is in my signature below. I am using BIOS ver 1506

I have configured the memory as advised elsewhere in this thread by Phil with

Memory speed = 800mhz
memory voltage=2.0 volts
timing = 5,5,5,12.

Q1. Why did the P5W recognise my memory as 553mhz memory rather than 800mhz? Is the change I've made in the bios to have it recognised as 800mhz considered overclocking? Are the setting Ive used appropriate for the corsair memory I have? I see there is an additional memory timing setting in the list (in the bios) after the 5,5,5,12. Its still set at the defult. is that ok?

Q2. I have read a lot in this tread about temperature. The coretemp readings I have are 57/58 at idle. Motherboard is reported as 59 by probe II. These seem higher than other peoples readings. I only have the standard FSF that ships with the E6600 and also the powersupply has a fan (and so does the x1950xtx). I'd like to experiment with overclocking, Do you think that I need additional cooling before I do - or do I need additional cooling NOW? The CPU sensor in Probe II jumps to 256 every minute or so. I have seen other people have had this issue as well, but is there a solution to this problem or should I just abandon Ausprobe II?

Q3. I am running 2 seagate sata II drives in raid zero config. It all works fine. I also have a single ide drive on the jmicron controller. When windows boots the jmicron application that auto loads at boot time always crashes. Is there a fix for this? The drive however works fine under windows once I dismiss the jmicron error message.

Thanks,

Ozjim ~

We have now completed our 1st ever build with your help. Thanks a million.

The build went without a hitch because of this thread.

Our build is the one in my sig, and let me tell you this thing kicks butt in all of our games!

The only question I have as of now is about our temps.
The CPU is 29 Degrees idle and just a few more under load, which i assume is ok.

I am really wondering about the Mobo....it is 46 degrees at idle and around 51 under some gaming load....is this ok, or do I need to do something else for some better cooling?

Right now we have a 120mm intake in front of case and a 120mm exhaust at the rear with the power supply also having a 120mm fan on it. CPU has a Zalmon 9500.

Thanks again for all of your help....This thread is the bomb!

That's great to hear. Congrats. You and you son have a real kickass rig to play with. Enjoy.

NL mkII is correct, regarding your temps. They're just fine. To expand on the difference between the CoreTemp readings and what you see with Asus Probe, there are 3 temp sensors on a Core 2 Duo CPU die: 1 thermal diode (read by the BIOS and Asus Probe) and two digital thermal sensors (read by CoreTemp), one located near each core. The core sensors are located on a much hotter part of the CPU die, which explains the discrepancy between them and the thermal sensor. While it is likely that the thermal sensor provides a somewhat accurate reading of the temperature at its location, there is great debate as to how accurate are the readings from the two digital thermal sensors. Many people believe that those temps are a tad on the high side, many do not. Myself, I have no opinion. I judge my situation by taking into account all 3 temps. Imo, keep the core temps below 70C and you'll be just fine.

As for the mobo temp, an idle reading anywhere between 40C and 50C is normal for this board. The mobo temp diode is located near the sothbridge chipm which runs hot. Therefore, that reading is not so much the board ambient temp, but the temp of the southbridge.

Q1) This is normal. Without getting into long-winded explanation of memory dividers (there must be a few places in this thread where I do explain in more detail), your memory was not improperly detected. The BIOS simply set your mem to run in sync with the FSB. DDR2-533 runs in sync with default Core 2 Duo FSB (266MHz). Increasing your mem to DDR2-800 is not overclocking, as that is the rated speed for your kit. However, in doing so, the BIOS will use a memory divider, since you are now running the memory at a faster bus speed than the FSB. This is NOT a bad thing. As for the timings, you need only set the first 4, as per the specs for your kit, and leave the rest at default.

Q2) First of all, PC Probe 2 is buggy as all heck. The 256C (as well as 128C) reading is bogus. Ignore it. YOu would be much happier using something else to monitor your temps, fan speeds, and voltages. I recommend Everest Ultimate. It's not free, but well worth the low price. A good free solution would be Speedfan.

On to your temps. They are high. You definitely need to address your cooling situation before overclocking. Your case should have at the very least one intake fan at the front and one exhaust fan at the back. Good airflow through the case will significantly improve temps. You should also consider an aftermarket CPU cooler and some Artic Silver 5 thermal paste. You should also try disabling QFAN in the BIOS, so that current fan can run at 100% rpm.

Q3) On this I cannot be much help. I have had the JMicron controller disabled since day one.

Could it be that you have your mouse and keyboard connected to the lower two USB ports on the back of the case? These two ports are always fed power, even when the machine is powered-down, to allow for the remote to power-up the machine.

thanks for the quick reply. actually, i have both the mouse and keyboard plugged into their respective ps/2 ports...does this mean i have a defective mobo?

Hi,

Having some OC problems with these settings with BIOS 1506 :

CPU Frequency: 350MHz
DRAM Frequency: DDR2 700MHz (1:1)
Performance Mode: Standard
PCI Express Frequency: 100
PCI Clock Synchronization Mode: 33.33
Memory Voltage: 2.20V
CPU Vcore Voltage: 1.4V
FSB Termination: 1.4
MCH Chipset Voltage: Auto
ICH Chipset Voltage: AUTO
Digital Home Mode: Disabled

Under Advanced Chipset:

DRAM Timings by SPD: Manual (per RAM specs 5-5-5-15)
DRAM ECC Mode: Disabled
Hyper Path 3: Disabled
DRAM Throttling Threshold: Auto
*All PEG Settings AUTO*

Under advanced CPU settings:

Microcode Updation: Enabled
Everything else: Disabled

I have every device Disabled that I don't need eg. RAID controller, Serial Port etc etc

Problem is that with these setting I run Prime95 or Orthos and it immedietely gives me errors.

Any idea's what mistakes I've made ?

Cheers

Was worried about the temps that the system was producing, so I replaced the stock HSF with a Zalman CNPS9500, removed the plastic tops from the chipset heatsinks and added a 90mm chassis fan in the front and a 120mm chassis fan in the rear. It now runs 10 degrees cooler measured with coretemp and 20 degrees cooler with Probe II!

Great!

Hi there!

I built my new rig a few days ago. But suddenly (well, after installing a few things) the BIOS doesn't show up no more after starting up!

When powering up, there is a white blinking _ on a black screen. Then after 30 secs, Windows starts. Pressing DEL doesn't work.

To be honest, I generally avoid any product starting with the letters "EZ", but it's working...
I was having the same issue as you and I didn't want to bend to the EZ Asus controller. It turns out that the drivers that came with the board's CD are crapped out (I guess this is no news).

I slipstreamed the newest drivers to WinXP and it installed without any issues.

Sorry for pulling a McFly on this thread, but that problem had been bugging me endlessly and I thought I posted my results. Which, I'm betting has already been resolved since page 14.

I was just reading some threads on ExtremeOverclocker and they strongly recommend against any 'auto' settings. It seems that the motherboard will try to adjust the voltages based on a calculation which will push the voltage very high.

Try setting those to
vMCH 1.55
vICH to lowest value or the next one up.

thanks for the reply !

i raised the vCore to 1.475 but Orthos gives errors again after 40 seconds.....

i changed these as suggested

"vMCH 1.55
vICH to lowest value or the next one up."

anything else i can change ?

just idling the CPU is 45 degrees......

cheers

You know, it's really hard to know why your o/c is failing. If you haven't already, you should set everything to stock and run a memtest86 diagnostic on your memory. It's important to establish that all your hardware is working properly, before overclocking. That way, if the overclock fails, you know it's not due to a bad component. Until you verify that all your gear is working properly, you may be wasting your time troubleshooting your failed overclock.

OK I 'll do that

So am I correct in saying that I copy memtest to a floppy and run without windows ?

Also : Do you think I am being unrealistic expecting 3.5GHz (which I'm at now but with Orthos errors) stable on air cooling ?

Download the ISO image file from:
http://www.memtest.org

Burn this image to a CD (Nero has an image burning application) and boot with it. If you get any errors, run it again on each stick individually.

I've downloaded the Zip file, unzipped the ISO and tried 5 times to burn it to CD. Every time I get "data verification failed" ? same on both burners ?? WTF ??

anyone else had a problem with Memtest ?

Are you burning the ISO file directly on to the CD? If so, enjoy your brand-new coaster(s). An image file, like this ISO, is kind-of like a ZIP file. It's an archive of a CD or DVD, compressed into one file. Burning an image is extracting the files directly on to a blank version of the media that it was taken from. This ISO is an image of a CD. If you have Nero, go into the Backup area and look for the option to burn image to dics. The approriate application will start. From there, you choose the bottom-most project from the left pane, and then the bottom-most option from the new main list of job types. A new window will open where you can then point the app to the ISO file. Start the burn.
