I assume the best way to attach the drives is to put my HD on SATA1, and to daisy chain the 2 opticals to the primary IDE connection on the side of the board that is opposite the rear of the computer.

I will NOT be doing any overclocking. I do not plan on using the remote control features, but will try to use the built in wireless network feature.

My question has to do with BIOS setup. What, if anything, do I need or want to disable in the BIOS in order to have the functionality I need but also to have the shortest boot time. I know, for example, that I want to disable the onboard sound.

Any and all tips would be appreciated.

Since a system builder is assembling the system, what should I look at in the BIOS to be certain all is setup the best way? What, if any, of the included ASUS software should I install?

Also, what is best way to verify that all needed drivers have been installed and are of the best release version?

Thanks in advance for all help.

I'll improvise a quick guide for you.

Drive config:
- SATA boot on SATA1 (red port)
- Optical PATA drives in master/slave orientation on ICH7R (blue) IDE port

BIOS:
- flash to latest version (currently 1602) using AFUDOS or EzFlash method (see manual for explanation)
- disable onboard audio, secondary ethernet controller, JMicron controller and the serial port (assumiong you will not be using these items)

Drivers:
- download latest 975X chipset drivers from www.intel.com (this should be the first thing you install once in Windows)
- ethernet driver on the P5WDH CD is fine
- for video and audio, use the latest drivers from the respective manufacturers

Software:
- ASUS Probe 2 (found on the P5WDH CD) will solve the unknown PCI device issue in the device manager. Actually using ASUS Probe 2 another story. It's buggy. Better to use Everest Ultimate for all temp, voltage, and fan speed monitoring. Great app.

No need to install anything else found on the P5WDH CD.

Enjoy the new rig.

Yes, many times, but no BIOS settings. The only effect of hitting DEL is that the JMicron message stays (no following up of Windows) until I press F1.

The strange thing about it that the JMicron driver/setting is apperantly not in the CMOS (it's still there after clearing); and it's not in Windows either (I did a clean re-install of Windows).

Have you checked your keyboard?

Thanks for the advice Phile, but newboy has no floppy drive.
Which method is safer EZ flash or asus update?

I think the keyboard is working fine. I will perform a little DEL-test.

OK, I will press the DEL-button right.... no

Did you see the 'w' in the word 'now'? If not, my keyboard is working fine

Hello everybody!

Newboy has successfully upgraded bios to ver. 1705! Yaaaaay for newboy!

Bios Settings: FSB- 333
VCore- Auto
Ram- DDR2 666
VDimm- 2.0
Timing- 5-5-5-12 (originally 4-4-4-15,)

but

during post, ram is displayed as being 533mhz, is that normal?
CPU temps at load are between 60-65, is that too high?
Would it be better to set ram to 800mhz?

975x Chipset drivers..

Phile, you said " download latest 975X chipset drivers from www.intel.com (this should be the first thing you install once in Windows) " in a recent post.

My PC is working fine but I am just using the "default" 975x drivers. Can you point me to a link with the exact file that I need?

do you think its worth doing if my PC is going just fine?

Thanks,

OzJim

Newboy should know that the mem will normally be set by the BIOS to run at 533MHz by default, at stock settings. Newboy should feel free to set the mem to whatever available settings are available at the desired FSB. For a 1:1 MEM:FSB ratio at 266MHz (FSB), the mem should be set to 533MHz. For a 1:1 MEM:FSB ratio at 333MHz (FSB), the mem should be set to 666MHz. Since the board supports many memory dividers, you will have several options for the mem at any aparticular FSB.

Newboy's temps are too high (unless those are core temps provided by CoreTemp), and he should reseat the heatsink to make sure there's good contact with the CPU heatspreader.

Yeah, installing the latest chipset drivers is worth doing, and very low-risk.

Latest drivers for 975X chipset:
http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts...ct_Filter.aspx?ProductID=2261&lang=eng

Select your OS and download the latest INF Update Utility [INFINST_AUTOL.EXE] , usually the first item in the list.

By "default" do you mean Chipset installation Utility on the P5WDH CD?

Just run the executable and then reboot. That's all there is to it.

CPU temps at load are between 60-65

Temps taken from Everest Ultimate & CoreTemp.
So temps are fine then?

Thanks

I'm also curious about those PEG settings. I need to do some googling around to at least understand what they're for but, Phile, if you already some good links please do post them.

About SPD Enable option. I use a pair of 1 GB G.Skill (F2-6400CL5D-2GBNQ) RAM and I normally set the timings myself. Out of curiosity, I set them to SPD and I get some weird timings (5-6-6-14, then 5-5-5-15 the next reboot; it seems to always change). How come this happens? I thought SPD would, in the case of this RAM, either give the timings for 200 or 400 MHz; whatever fell in between would be 'rounded up'.

Another thing, I can't seem to be able to set the board to wake-up on either keyboard on mouse. Anyone else having this issue?

(apologies for the double-post)

Hey guys, I'm having trouble getting my setup up to where i think it should be able to overclock to as well as others with similar specs have been able to get.

If i follow the settings from this site to reach 3.6GHz, I cannot even get a POST.

Before upgrading to the latest 3dMark06 patch i was able to complete test without fail at the settings below (until most recent patch where a get a consistent sys.lock even at stock BIOS settings, but that is a different issue). Orthos as well as MemTest86 also run without error.

Another issue for me is that when i play Battlefield 2142 i will eventually get a hard reset after a bit with the below settings and a CPU Freq above 327 (yes even 328 hard resets).

So i guess what i'm asking is if there is anything noticeable with the settings below that may be at fault? Perhaps something in my system specs in my siggy? I've followed a few guides and thread suggestions hear and elsewhere but am unable to get beyond my current 3.27GHz CPU freq with stability.

At this point i suspect it is probably RAM related as I see a few threads of PC2-8500 memory being incompatible or at issue with this board. At POST with my current setting i'm seeing PC2-7100, but as others have noted, it is common to have inaccurate POST readings.

Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum and I'm doing my first build with my brother using this motherboard. I just wanted to make sure that my cpu cooler and power supply will be adequate.

My cpu cooler is the Zalman CNPS 9700LED: Does this fit easily or will I need to make any mods to the cooler?

My power supply is the Thermaltake TR2 W0070RUC 430W: I know its a little on the weak side but I'm only going to have a single ATI x1900 video card and I don't think I'll do any significant overclocking. Is this enough power or do I need somthing stronger?

Appreciate the input.

Your mem specs are 5-5-5-15. Maybe this is a typo or something, and the DRAM Write Recovery Time, I'd leave it at default 4.

DOh, yea, definitley a type-o. Lemme fix that, Sorry.

BTW, where did you see the Write Recovery Time is defaulted @ 4?

Write Recovery Time is defaulted @ 4 is in the manual.

If I might add, try bumping up the vcore. I doubt you need it since your C2D is probably a more recent week than my week 24 (L624A573). Otherwise I don't know why you can't run at a higher FSB. ?_?
