But reading a dvd or burning a dvd/cdr this computer becomes slower then the sempron system sitting beside it.

I had/have a very similar problem. I installed WinXP with a Benq 1655; however, when Windows booted the DVD drive was not detected. The drive doesn't show up in device manager (though I can see it in bios setup). I added an old CD-ROM drive and that allowed both drives to show up but then the DVD drive was very very slow and refused to read anything. Also my mouse became stuttery, too (I thought it was RF interference as I moved the computer to a different part of lab). I took out the DVD drive and the performance improved (no jittery mouse, higher 3D mark scores). I put the DVD drive in an enclosure and connected via firewire, but there was no problems with that setup. This was all with 11.01. I haven't tried it with 12.01 or 13.01 yet. Hopefully Asus gets their act together.
kpamir, have you tried connecting only one DVD drive? If so, does that drive show up?

Heathbar, looks like you have the same problem I have. I solved it by using a very old CD-ROM drive and removing my DVD burner. I'm sure that's not what you wanted to hear.

Phil- The blue one.

Vikroda - at this point anything to get it up and running will make me happy.

I also tried to update the bios through AFUDOS utility. However a floppy is too small for both the bios and the AFUDOS.

The P5W DH has EzFlash (see manual for description). Prepare your floppy with just the BIOS. Boot the computer and hit ALT + F2 at POST. The rest should be obvious.

Just wondering as I have the P5W DH Deluxe and I just flashed tothe 0801, but since I was the P5B Deluxe having a new BIOS 0507 with:
1. Support Conroe CPU ratio adjustment
3. Enhance performance when using NVDIA 7950GX2 VGA card
6. Support Max FSB from 500 MHz to 650 MHz
I would like to know when this will also be done for the P5W DH Deluxe. And certainly that Support Conroe CPU ratio adjustment...

I've never used EZFlash but it would seem you need to rename the BIOS file on your floppy to P5WDH.ROM from whatever it is now.

I used AFUDOS with 2 floppies. One boot floppy, and the other floppy with the AFUDOS executable and the BIOS file.

You have another option, still. ASUS has a BIOS flashing utility that allows you to flash the BIOS from within windows. It's on the P5W DH CD, but seeing as you cannot use your optical drives, you can download it here:

Heathbar,

Did you install the drivers for the Micron JMB36X Controller? This controller supplies an additional IDE connection to the P5W DH board. Check the "Device Manager" to ensure that you have installed all device drivers for all components.

i have a question

i just finished the assembly of my computer

i started it and went into the bios to set ddr2-800 and timing

when it comes to timing, i have not 4 but 5 clocks adjustement

i set the 3 first at 5
and the fourth one at 12
(the exact timing that was on my memory when i bought it CL5-5-5-12)

but there is a fifth value below the one i have set to "12"

i think it was at "5"

i didnt change it

is it normal

The first 4 correspond to the rated timings. You can leave others at default.

I have a few questions:

The plastic toppings on the NB/SB Heatinks - Do they easily come off?

Has anyone left the thermale paste on the NB/SB alone? If so how is it running? I'll have a 25cm fan blowing on both bridges.

Has anyone installed a CNPS9500? How hard was it?

I'll be ordering it when NewEgg gets it back in stock (a few days from now) if it somehow dosent have the right bios how can I install the new one? Can I use a flash drive with the BIOS installed or updater on it? A floppy perhaps? If so how do I do it?

Has anyone used an X-Fi with these board? I've hear horror stories about X-Fi's and most Chipsets.

Definitely remove the plastic film from each heatsink.

In fact, have a look here:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=106563

Am illustrative guide to optimizing the passive cooling on both the NB and SB.

re: CNPS9500
I'm using one and it was rather easy to install.

re: BIOS
If your board comes with < 0701 you will need another LGA775 CPU in order to flash the BIOS. The board cannot post with a conroe with any version pre-0701. If you just ordered your P5W DH, you'll likely be ok. I would suggest setting it up barebones, outside of the case, so that you can at least verify which BIOS you have, before mounting everything.

re: X-Fi
Get an Audigy 2 or 4.

Hi Guys,

It felt pretty good my 1st build: Yesterday I built my ASUS P5W DH system (see signature),
I had a ? about the SATA hard drives though. Win XP Pro SP2 recognized the drives so I could load windows OK.
In the BIOS they are listed as IDE... I don't want RAID setup just SATA drive 1 and 2..

For this MB do I need to update SATA drivers? or is the stock drivers on XP SP2 CD good enough?...How come I don't see the word SATA anywhere? If I do need updated SATA drivers where to get them for this Asus MB?

Thanks Vince

If not using RAID or AHCI, your BIOS settings should be:

Configure SATA as: [Standard IDE]
Onboard IDE Operate Mode: [Enhanced Mode]
Enhanced Mode Support On: [S-ATA]

No SATA drivers required.

Unless you made any changes, the above settings should be the defaults.

It should run any PCI-E video card, just fine. Where this board adds ATi-only support is Crossfire - ATi's answer to SLI.

Thank you renozi. I just picked up my X-Fi platnium today. Still waiting for E6600's and P5W's to be in stock over at New Egg. Its so hard to just have these components sitting here :'(.

For installing the CNPS9500 did you have to remove anything to install? Zalmans install video shows you having to install something behind the processor?

Like:
_ heatisnk
_ Processor socket
_ were the guide shows you install something.

I've got my 6600 at 3.4 ghz stable at 1.45 vcore. During Orthos PCprobe says my cpu gets up to 61C when its doing its CPU stress testing. Is that an ok temp? It idles at 39C, and never goes above 45C when I am gaming. MB temp never goes above 45C. Am I ok?

I'm using a Scythe Ninja HS with a Nexus 120mm on it, and a Nexus 120mm as an exhaust fan, both are running at full speed 12v.

You need to download CoreTemp so that you can monitor the temps of each core.

http://www.thecoolest.zerobrains.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=137

The temp read by PROBE II comes from a diode on the mobo, under the CPU socket, while CoreTemp read from digital thermal sensor on the CPU die itself. You core temps should never go higher than 85C. Frankly, I wouldn't let them go anywhere near that high.

Core Temp reported that the highest temp my cores went to was 78C during my stress trest marathon. When I'm gaming Core Temp says they never go above 60C.

Found this out the hard way...unfortunately if you have older revision of NeoHE, Windows will fail to install. I have the NeoHE 550 with serial number starting with S0511xxxxxxx and I cannot install Windows. It always hangs at around 34 minutes remaining. Other users have also experienced this problem:

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=111370

I bought a Seasonic S-12 600W to replace the NeoHE and everything is now peachy. Although the Seasonic's fan is much louder than the NeoHE. Infact, it's the only fan in my system that is audible from 3 feet away.

iAtticus, yea on the Zalman CNPS9500 you have to install the LGA775 retention bracket on the back of the motherboard so that you can screw down the heatsink on the other side. It's really easy and should take no time at all! Remember to read the instructions and use the S-clip on the heatsink for the right fit. Hope you enjoy your Conroe when you get it!
