No... I tried that several times, it seemed like the logical solution. Finally, just removing any/all of the RAID jumpers and it works like a charm. No other configuration or software necessary. Apparently after removing the jumpers (default mode has two jumpers), the EZ-RAID1 SATA connector simply becomes the "missing" SATA2 port on ICH7R -- just what I was hoping for.

Hi, I just built new machine, spec is in my signature.
I just changed my memory setting and was wondering if it is okay or not.

Mem timing changed to 4-4-4-12 and mem voltage changed to 2.1v
Are these setting okay for my system?

I ran the memtest86+ and everything looks okay, however I am unsure of what the memtest86 would spit out if my memory was faulty, I hope you guys can tell me what I should spot and how long should I run the test for?

Thank you in advance.

Your timings should be the rated timings for your particular memory kit. If you post the exact make and model of your memory, I can help you determine if your current settings are correct.

Oh, and you rig link is incorrect. When people click the link you used, they will their Anandtech page, not yours. Using your unique ID, I found your rig page, here:

http://www.anandtech.com/mysystemrig.aspx?rigid=33897

So, use that link in your sig.

Sorry, kinda new in the forum.

So just to repeat
My memory is OCZ 2x1GB PC26400 Platinum Rev 2
Mem timing changed to 4-4-4-12 and mem voltage changed to 2.1v
Are these setting okay for my system?

Then I ran the memtest86+ and everything looks okay, however I am unsure of what the memtest86 would spit out if my memory was faulty, I hope you guys can tell me what I should spot and how long should I run the test for?

Thank you in advance.

HELP PLEASE:

Okay so I was just playing Commmand and Conquer 3 and the game froze and I was waiting for it to crash out, but was forced to use the reset button. After reseting the machine posted fine but it was a tad slower than usually all hardrives and such were detected just fine but when trying to boot up to windows it gave this message:

Reboot and Select poper Boot Device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot Device and press a key...

I have checked all the bios everythings checks out fine, the system posts fine with no beeps or errors in the messages for any of the hardrives, I checked the connects internally etc. any help would be appreciated. I already tried the CHKDSK /R and it didn't really find anything. I dug around and people say that "fixboot" or "fixmbr" should do the trick but some people have gotten mixed result.

WinXP Professional SP2
Asus P5W-DH Deluxe
Intel QX6700 at stock speed
2 gigs of DDR2-800 Corsair Ram @ 2.1V (4-4-4-12)
1x 150gig Raptor
1x 74 gig Raptor
1x 36 gig Raptor

Could be that the master boot record is corrupt. To fix the MBR, you'll need to boot with your XP CD and follow the steps you would normally follow when installing XP. You will eventually get to the screen where you can choose to install a new copy, or repair an existing installation. Choose the repair option. Once you get to the command prompt, type:

> fixmbr

Reboot.

Tried that and fixboot, fix boot said it reset it. Fixmbr did nothing or apparently nothing. Pressed enter and it just went down one line to the C:> prompt. Rebooted same message.

After further examination it looks like my partition table is messed up. Is there any type of tool or command to delete these and rebuild it into a bootable partition? For example I had my 150 gig raptor partitioned into drives C: and D: .

Drive C was the 30 Gig OS and Programs, Drive D: was the 120 gigs or less and I had all my games installed on it.

Is there a program that I could use to at least make the drive bootable or if not that can I recover some of the data off it? Thanks.

Hello, First post here due to the sheer amount of info on the P5W. Great stuff here!

I have a P5W DH Deluxe running an Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 with 2 GB (2 sticks of 1GB)of OCZ DDR2 PC6400 Dual Channel RAM with the platinum heat spreaders, OCZ2P8002GK. Board came flashed with the 1305 BIOS, but while troubleshooting, I"ve already upped it to 1602. Everything was great at first until I realized that the board was only seeing half my memory and at a lower speed, PC2-5300. Reading forums, I realized that my timings were off. I configured the memory and have it running at "PC2-6400 Dual Channel Interleaved ... 1024MB OK".

I've swapped around banks, and tried lots of configurations. With one stick removed, it's 512GB of single channel. It's like it's only seeing half of each stick. Looking at the manual, I've found the line in the Qualified Vendors Lists for DDR2-800that reads "512 MB OCZ Heat-Sink Package SS OCZ28001024EBDCPE-K" with A B and C unchecked. I'm guessing that my particular ram will only run single sided in this board and that is the problem.

I'm currently running it at 4-4-4-15-5 (I think) at 2.1 volts. The only problem I get is when playing a 3d game and I enter a new area, it studders/pauses a bit when loading the new textures.

I had hope reading Matego's post a little bit ago, until I realized that his RAM is "Rev 2".

Should I take this RAM back to the store? or can you suggest something I can try.

Ok, so it looks like you have these:
http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/m.../ocz_ddr2_pc2_6400_platinum_revision_2

If so, the rated timings @ 800MHz are 4-4-4-15

And, welcome to the forums.

-phil

Yup thats the one, so the setting that I have used is suitable right?
Timing 4-4-4-15-4 with 2.1 volts ?
And with the 5th number, will it perform better if I change it to 5 ?

Another question that I have would be with the memtest86.
I used memtest86 v1.70 with the floppy disk.
What would the result be if I have a faulty memory?

Sorry about the series of question, I am kind off new in this area.

Thanks in advance

Only set the first four timings (4-4-4-15). Leave all others at their default settings. And, yes, you should set the vDimm to 2.1v.

Another question that I have would be with the memtest86.

If there was a problem during the diagnostic, you would see errors displayed in bright red.

Sorry about the series of question, I am kind off new in this area.

That's why forums like this exist, so no need to apologize.

Thanks in advance

You have exactly the same memory kit as me. Essentially, it's the rev #1 Platinum XTC PC2-6400. The correct settings for this memory are:

Rated Speed: DDR2-800

Voltage (at rated speed): 2.1v

Timings (at rated speed):
CL 4-5-4-15
(CAS-TRCD-TRP-TRAS)

Note: the P5WDH BIOS transposes TRCD and TRP, so you will enter them in the BIOS as follows:

4-4-5-15

Leave all other timings at default settings.

Now, I really have no idea why you would see only half your memory. What I would suggest is:

- make sure your two DIMMS are installed in slots 1 + 3 (the two orange slots)
- flash BIOS to 1901 (download here: ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/mb/socket775/P5W%20DH%20Deluxe/P5WDH1901.zip)
- reset BIOS to default settings
- reconfigure BIOS (see above settings)

If you still see only half your memory, after having done the above, you should run a memtest on each DIMM separately.

http://www.memtest.org

Download the ISO and burn the image to a CD. Boot with the CD and let all ten tests run. You may have a bad DIMM.

I reset my BIOS, flashed the BIOS to 1901, reset it again, reconfigured it, but I get a voltage setting failed error when trying to boot with one stick inserted and the manual settings turned on, so I set the DRAM freq back to automatic for the tests.

Independently they both detect at 512MB regardless of the slot I try them in. I used the orange slot A1 for the tests, but the RAM still detected at only 512MB each when I ran them in the black slots.

Because the BIOS detects them as only 512MB each, or course memtest only sees them at 512 as well. Both sticks passed a normal memtest, however memtest froze during the memory probe at 4% total / 50% (current) test.

Looking at the RAM, it has small holes through the "platinum" heat spreader and you can observe the dark memory chips on the front, however there are none on the back indicating to me that these are single sided. I wonder if I got a bad set missing the back side of chips, or a bad memory map.

EDIT: Reset BIOS memory again and booted with memory in black slots, still detects at 1GB. Strangely however, it's really 1023 not 1024 like i'd expect. I noticed this from the beginning. I get 511 in memtest with only one stick inserted. Is 1 MB being allocated to video memory? I hope the 320MB or RAM on my GeForce 8800 GTS aren't being wasted! ^_^

Thanks, but bascially the main 150 gig drive was really messed up and I checked it with some diagnostic tools and it had bad sectors so I am 'writing zeros' to the drive now. Here is the new problem though...

Okay so yesterday my main C drive got messed up on reboot. But I had 2 other drives (74 gig raptor and a 36 gig raptor) in the computer as storage. Okay when I initally went to check if all the drives were being read in the windows installation setup I deleted the partitions, but didn't reformat them or reallocate the space. Does this actually delete them? I didnt actually create or format them in the windows setup portion.

So After installing window on the 36 gig raptor I went to see if the 74 gig raptor data was intact. The disk management utilty shows it as RAW data and the total amount of data on the drive as FREE. I was able to make it drive D: on windows without reformating but am unable to view the drive, windows asks to format the drive becuase it is unformated. Check this disk with some utilties it is fine, aslo windows says it healthy, etc.

Bascially is it possible to check the data or if there is still any data on it OR do I have to reformat? Did I accidentally delete the contents when I deleted the partition in the windows setup?

It sounds as if you have a kit of 512MB DIMMS, not 1GB. Try something for me. Download CPUZ (http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpu-z-139.zip) and run it. Go to the SPD tab and reply with the part number.

There does exist software that you can use to recover a deleted partition, like Acronis Disk Director.

http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/diskdirector/

Make sure you do not format the drive!

Hey I had a question. Under Bios Power options I can set the CPU FAN speed to run at Performance mode. Is there any risk with running the fan that fast aside from the sound that I don't mind anyway?

Phile, I have to say that you're the most knowledgeable and helpful guy about any one subject I've ever met on a message board. Bravo!!

You nailed it. I am a victim of fraud. I bought a kit of OCZ2P8002GK and the part number that CPU-Z reports is OCZ2P800512... which indicates a 512MB part and not the 1GB module I should have gotten in the 2GigabyteKit.

I wonder if it's a manufacturing error, or someone at Fry's Electronics in Santa Clara, Ca pulled an ol' "switcheroo" on me.

...a grateful thx...

to phile, et al :

when i was putting together my first assembly, my current pc, just maybe several weeks ago, Phil and others were very supportive on this thread. i've been enjoying this system for several weeks now and i'm now at the phase of doing some fun tweaking of my system as well as starting to do wire management, etc.

i just want to say a short, quick word of "thanks" to Phil and others who have all pitched in to help me out. Those were scary, difficult times for someone who's trying to build his first computer! i really thought i was way over my head - and indeed, i probably was. yet, with the help of the good people here and elsewhere, i was able to do it and am enjoying my new machine now.

thank you all and Happy Spring!

Took the OCZ stuff back. Got some Corsair memory in its place. CM2X1024-6400C4, which is 2 sticks at 1GB each, 800MHz DDR2. 4-4-4-12 timings. Computer runs like butter now. Smooth. Doom3 on Ultra, 8xAA, 1680x1050 resolution. Tiny bit of stutter when loading textures for a new area, but not the hard disk thrashing I had before. Hard drive is pretty darn silent now . Thanks phile!

You can run your fan(s) at 100% rpm, without any danger.

Glad that's been settled. You likely feel victim to an innocent mistake, whether Fry's or OCZ's. Enjoy the new Corsair kit, it's a great performer.
