on this site what is the difference between those motherboards?
i ordered the one just labeled as "P5W DH Deluxe"
do you get the same features listed on Asus's site with both?
little help would be appreciated
thanks

The difference is about $4
Asus only makes 1 P5W DH...

Have one of these, trying to install RAM (Corsair XMS 6400 CAS5). First install was fine ie. Windows XP installed ok. The mobo defaulted the RAM down to PC2-5300, so I set it manually in the BIOS to the manufacturers timing. Machine ran ok for a few days. There began some start-up problems ie. it wouldn't always do so. Got to a point where it would not POST. Removed the 2nd stick of RAM. Got it to boot. Manually configured the RAM at 2V. Added the 2nd stick, all ok again...for a day or so.
Tried memtest (1.65 ie. latest version), 1 stick is failing at 465-466mb mark, consistently. The other stick will not work at all ie. the machine will not POST with the is stick. I have only used slot A1.
I assume it's very odd for 2 sticks of Corsair RAM (packaged as a matched pair) to *really* be faulty?

Does anyone have any suggestions. The current BIOS is 1201. The board was reset with the battery removed and the jumper after the flash.

I'm loathe to RMA this RAM, as I (UK viewers assume the Meldrew tone) do not believe it...but can!

I can't see other settings in BIOS having an impact, but can list these if necessary. There is nothing I can think of that has deviated from the 'default' though. I'm using 2 SATA drives, but not RAID.

Thanks for any input.

Not sure here: does the RAM test out bad at the default (5300) settings, or only when you go higher?

My boot drive died, taking all my installed programs and some files I need, so any attempt on my part to OC is slightly delayed. This is why one backs up ones computer, although also having a bootable Ghost floppy to restore with would be a nice idea...

Yes, at both manual and default settings it (the stick that will enable a POST) produces errors.

I left it running 1hr30 and it produced errors in every test - the most relevant ones(?) being 10K in 7 and 3K in 5. Maybe just relative to the software, but trying the 'advanced' tells me chipset not supported. A red herring, probably...

I've tried to run memtest with what I have read to be the best settings too eg. Hyperthreading(transport?) disabled, and disabling the legacy USB support too.

I'm about to call for an RMA; I'm sure I've seen people running this Corsair XMS2 6400 RAM with this board and chip (or at least a faster version of the same chip), and can see no further.

Incidentally, I could get to safe mode in Windows XP, but to try normally gives me a flash of a BSOD before restarting. Now when trying safe mode, it appears to hang at the loading(?) of JGOGO.sys...aaaaaaaaaaaargh, a Jmicron job? Getting sidetracked though...I guess the RAM is waht's creating this problem...

Well, so far my Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400C4 RAM hasn't produced any errors, but the latest reinstall of XP has only been finished since this morning. After the dust settles I do plan on a few stress-tests to be sure cranking up the performance is a safe thing to do.

Does the motherbord work if you populate the 2nd bank of RAM instead of the 1st bank?...

It just ate up a lot of my free time over the past week or two, and a chunk of change.

Hello all,

I'm doing my build right now, and on Page 2-9 of the motherboard manual, it says that when installing a dual core processor, you must connect the chassis fan cable to a few different places.

The chassis is obviously the case, and I'm guessing the fan cable refers to the main power cable for the fans in the chassis?

Am I interpreting this correctly?

Don't worry about it. I have NO fans at all connected to the mobo headers.

Can you recommend any simple errors to watch out for that you might have overlooked on your build?

Places where you set a jumper or fan incorrectly? Also, has anyone used a big typhoon cooler with their 6600?

I'll just list a bunch of stuff in point-form:

- BIOS 0701 or greater is required in order to post/boot with a Core 2 Duo CPU.

- Make sure you have a ATX 2.0 compliant power supply - one with a 24-pin connector AND 4-pin connector.

- No need to mess with any jumpers, unless you need to reset the CMOS or plan to build a raid array. See manual for instructions on the various ways to use RAID on this board.

- Remove the plastic film from both the heatsinks.

- There are two IDE ports for PATA drives. Only one is natively supported - the blue one. The other port - the black one - requires the JMicron controller driver to be installed prior to Windows install, if you plan to boot of an HD hooked-up to it. If you have no need for two IDE ports, just use the blue one and disable JMicron controller in bios.

- If you plan to use DDR2-667 or DDR2-800 mem, you will need to manally set it to run at those speeds. The mem will be running at DDR2-533 by default.

- You will also want to set the memory voltage and timings as per the rated specs for your memory.

Peruse the following two threads:

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=110193
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=106563

That's all I can think of, atm.

Phil, you are the man. I'm having an issue with my memory. I'm using the Corsair 5-5-5-12, XMS2 2x1024 DDR 800, but it is showing up incorrectly.

Where in the BIOS can I set it correctly?

Findout what the proper voltage and timings are for you rmemory running at stock - DDR2-800.

To set the DRAM Frequency (speed) and voltage:

- Advanced screen
- Set Jumperfree to manual

A bunch of settings will become unlocked. On this page you can manually set the mem speed and mem voltage.

To set your mem timings manually:

- Advanced screen
- Chipset Setup
- Set SPD Timings to disabled.

Again, a bunch of settings will become unlocked. When you write down your mem's timings, note the particular names for each, as the order is slighty off in the P5W DH timings list. It's the first four values that you will be adjusting.

That's it.

Am sorry if this has been covered before, but I haven't seen it.

Asus site shows:
24-pin ATX Power connector
4-pin EATX12V Power connector

Is the 24+4 required? Can I use a 20+4 PSU? (Specifically This One [newegg.com])

[EDIT: Or, wait a minute, that looks like it is a 24+4. Description says 20+4,but I count 24 on the main and I think I see a 4 pin power in the cables shot.]

@phil: Awesome. I'm confused at the picture though, but I assume it'll make more sense once I recieve it. Not quite sure why one of the connectors has an X on it. I'm assuming it's two identical cables and not one and just one end is Xed out.

Phile: Thank you so much for clarifying the memory settings!

I'm looking to build a system using:
E6400
Asus P5W DH

My question is the memory. Which is the better buy for this motherboard (note I will not be overclocking the system, I only care about stability): (all kits are 2gb)
OCZ 6400 Gold 5-5-5-12
OCZ 6400 Platinum 4-5-4-15
Mushkin EM 6400 5-5-5-12
Corsair XMS2 TwinX 6400 5-5-5-12

Right now the Gold is on sale for $185 (all in cdn), Platinum $210, Mushkin $238, Corsair $260. Given that the gold is the cheapest its the one I am leaning towards. Will I regret buying it?

Thank you again for your helpful comments.

Alright Phil, next question!

Which setting overclocks the 6600, and what is a safe minimal overclock if the processor has a TT Big Typhoon on it?

Whether or not you're going to be overclocking, I would go for the OCZ Platinum PC2-6400 kit. Slightly tighter timings. The Gold kit will be just fine if you need to keep within a budget. The slight difference in timings translates to a marginal drop in performance, nothing you'll even notice. Note: at stock speed the gold kit works best with 2.0v, while the Platinum kit works best with 2.1v.

Honestly, you'd be silly not to at least modestly o/c, with either setup. You could easily achieve a 25% o/c at stock voltage and no effort. This gear is meant to be pushed.
