Has anyone run Corsair PC8500 Dominator memory on the P5W DH?

I was looking at :

Corsair XMS2
DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)
Timing 5-5-5-15

I have got my E6400 to FSB 410 Vcore 1.40, vMCH: 1.65,

OC to 3.2Ghz with water-cooling
My memory is Corsair XMS2 PC26400. 2GB at 4-4-4-12 at 2.1 V (in spec).

It seems like my OC is pretty good for the E6400 (50% OC) so I am not complaining. My question is more theoretical. Does faster memory help the OC limit and second, is faster memory (like the newer PC8000 or PC8500 module) even supported on the P5W DH?

The higher speed memory allows that 1:1 ratio to FSB without cranking the voltage to the point where Corsair says they cannot guarantee the integrity of the module. That configuration has seemed to me the most stable when OC the C2D.

The P5W DH's weakness in my opinion is its memory overclockability at fast FSB (when compared to Intel 965 chipsets) is not there. Any opinions?

I found a good discussion on this AnandTech thread., but was looking for user first-hand experiece with these fast RAM sticks on the P5W DH (E6400 or E6600).

After some aggrevation, I found out what my issue was with my build. I had Samsung 2x2GB ECC memory. For some reason, the mobo just doesn't like it. I had to get the system running over the weekend, so I went to get the least expensive memory to get this thing going. I am trying to find the best route or buying new memory. I prefer to get 2x1GB, but not sure on the speed. With the price so high right now, I am limited slightly in options.

Is it better to go with 4-4-4-12 PC2 5300 or is it better to go 5-5-5-15 PC2 6400?

Any memory brand recommendations? I have seen some incompatibility issues, but those might have been voltage issues.

FWIW, the wireless on this thing sucks. I was hoping to use it as an access point, but all it does is screw up the network settings. I can't even set an IP address for the wireless adapter without explorer.exe choking and spitting out random errors (use a non zero subnet filter? Silly me, I thought 255.255.255.0 WAS non-zero?!?). I've even done a fresh install of XP. I cannot, for the life of me, get this thing to obtain an IP address, nor can I give it a static address, let alone get it to work as an access point, so if that's a selling point for you, cross it off.

Hi, looking at getting a mobo for a 6600, reviews Ive seen are quite old and wondered is this the best overclocking board for this chip?

Best Asus overclockers for conroe:

- P5WDH
- P5B Deluxe
- P5W64 Pro

I'm not convinced there's a best, in this bunch. They're all going to overclock really well with the right gear, and an experienced overclocker. If I was buying today, I'd go P5B Deluxe, though. It was an iffy board a few months ago, when it was brand-new. However, subsequent BIOS revisions have resulted in this board being dramatically improved. It's also the most affordable of the trio.

Yeah, best is kinda dependent on the chip you plan on using with it. As it is of this posting for a 6300/6400 P5B-E is closest to best and for 6600+ its a toss up between the P5W DH and the P5W64 WS Pro. The DH model is more affordable but the WS Pro overclocks higher now. The WS Pro can also be volt modded for even higher overclocks from what I hear. For the less technically inclined I'd say P5B-E and the P5W Dh.

Edit: This is subject to change with new BIOSes and/or new mobos that are just being announced.

I am putting a new computer together using this motherboard. Are there any issues with anything I'm using such as PATA optical drives?

ASUS P5W DH DELUXE/WIFI-AP Socket T (LGA 775) Intel 975X ATX Intel Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz LGA 775
SILVERSTONE ST85ZF ATX12V/ EPS12V 850W Power Supply
ZALMAN CNPS9500 AT 2 Ball CPU Cooling Fan/Heatsink
CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Model TWIN2X2048-6400C4
Western Digital Raptor WD1500ADFD 150GB 10,000 RPM Serial ATA150 Hard Drive
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3320620AS (Perpendicular Recording Technology) 320GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s
Creative SOUND BLASTER X-Fi Platinum 7.1 Channels PCI Interface Sound Card
a X1950XTX video card (haven't decided which)
a new optical drive and perhaps a high density one like blu-ray(probably these will be PATA?)

Thanks in advance,
Rich

Phile,

Hoping you might be able to help me with a new build:

P5WDH 1201
E6600
Corsair ddr2-800 6400 4-4-4-12
ati 1950
2x seagate barracuda 7200.10 320g

My problem (so far) ... connected the HDD's to the intel chipset with the red cables. ran the intel utility to set up raid0, made driver disk as per manual instructions, Installing windows, F6 install raid drivers, setup continues, format disk etc... than I get unable to copy error for all raid files on the floppy (eight I think) followed by a windows stop error.
Floppy was made from Asus system cd. ??

The other peculiar thing is that post screen shows the correct processor speed 2.44ghz, but the next line says speed 1.60 count2...I'm guessing this is not normal.

Been a long time since I've made a build from scratch. I assume I am missing something obvious. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Hm. Perhaps, you should grab the latest Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver from Intel, and start over. You may have loaded the wrong driver.

http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts...ct_Filter.aspx?ProductID=2101&lang=eng

Scroll down to Utilities, Tools and Examples, it's the first link. With that you'll b able to create a new F6 floppy. During the Windows install, make sure you choose the correct driver (ICH7R) when prompted - you will be presented with several options, so scroll through the list until you find the right one.

Regarding processor speed, this board support Intel Speedstep, which reduces the CPU frequency (by droping the CPU multiplier by one or two levels) when the machine is not being taxed. If you want to be sure that this is what's going on, disable Speedstep in the BIOS - Advanced/CPU.

I see nothing wrong with your proposed configuration. Some people have had issues with their PATA HDs and opticals, but it's not at all clear that there is a single cause, in all the cases I have seen. I have two PATA opticals running on the ICH7R IDE channel (blue port), without issue.

Well, no such animal ever happens flashing to 1305, beyond a need to save the parameters again. I rebooted 1503 at least 3 times, loading my OC parameters, checking them carefully, then doing a F10 to save them again. Only when I agreed to do a F2 to continue booting with defaults did I get Windows to come up under 1503.

If it's the same people with these kinds of 1503 problems as with 1407, it wouldn't surprise me...

I don't know exactly what causes all these problems you;re having, but it makes perfect sense that the checksum be different after flashing to a new BIOS version. How are you flashing the BIOS. I use afudos and a floppy.

Can anybody help me out with a couple problems I have with this board?

First off, my spec with this MB:

Antec P180 Case
Intel E6600
Corsair Twin2X2048-PC2-8500C5
Thermaltake CL-P0114 Big Typhoon CPU Cooler
WD Raptor 150GB HDD
Samsung SP2504C HDD
NEC ND-3550A DVD-R/W
Sapphire Radeon X1900 XT 512MB
Seasonic S12 600W
Jing Ting JTS0006 chipset cooler for SB
Thermaltak CL-C0034 chipset cooler for NB

I have it OC at 333FSB @ 3GHz using the 1407 BIOS.

I don?t keep my PC on all day/night. Because it?s giving off a lot of heat, I only turn it on when I need to use it. That means it?s off when I?m sleeping or when I?m at work, so when I turn it on for the first after I get back from work, these problems usually occur:

1. The MB is having a hell of time recognizing the WD Raptor HDD consistantly (which I have Windows installed on). Sometime it would spend 2-3 minutes looking for the drive before it crap out and say it can?t find it. I then have to do a hard reboot and hoping it would find the drive ? sometime I have to do this 4-5 times before it would finally recognize the Raptor and boot up Windows. This happened with or without overclocking. Very annoying.

2. When it does get into Windows finally, it would sometime freeze after a few minutes of used and have to do a reboot. However, after this reboot, the system would be rock solid. Passed all tests running Prime95 and SuperPi simultaneously for several hours.

I know the second problems might have to do with overclocking, and I can live without overclocking if it can go away, but the first problem of not recognizing the HDD is driving me nuts. Any ideas?

Werent people having problems using that RAM with this mobo? I thought I remembered hearing 8500 wasnt that compatible with it. I know most people are using 6400 (800)RAM. At 333fsb there shouldnt be any problems as far as OCing goes unless the RAM isnt set right. 333fsb is pretty much a gurantee OC with this mobo.

USB. And the point is, after each REBOOT I got a CMOS checksum error, not just each reflash. Like no matter how I saved things, 1503 didn't like them.

I am not the only person who couldn't get 1407 to boot when I had my Corsair RAM using manual timings (worked OK with SPD timings). I am probably not the only person who had 1503 give errors...

Your spate of BIOS troubles is certainly not something widespread. Both 1407 and now 1503 are official BIOS releases, and you can't seem to get your rig stable with either. I wouldn't be so quick to blame the BIOS. Perhaps, if you were using a rare combination of components. But, that is not the case. You may have a buggered mobo. I would try, if possible, flashing with AFUDOS, which requires two floppies. And, use the following command switches:

afudos /iP5WDH.ROM /pbnc /n

This will reset the boot block and erase the CMOS. This is as clean a flash as you can do.

I'm having a couple of strange USB problems with this motherboard, that I'm hoping you guys might be able to shed some light on. My system is as follows:

C2D E6600
ASUS P5W DH mobo
2gb PC6400 RAM
ATI X1900XT GPU
Windows XP SP2

Latest mobo bios, and all chipset drivers etc fully up to date.

Basically I have the following issues:

1) Logitech USB G5 mouse. If I install the logitech mouseware/setpoint software, the mouse works fine etc - but most of the time when I go to shutdown my PC from windows, it IMMEDIATELY restarts (not a restart after having closed windows properly), usually then giving an MS error when I get back into windows. Without the logitech software installed, I don't have this issue.

2) I get the same immediate restart on shutdown issue if I plug one of my external USB HDDs (which has two card readers built into the case) into one of bottom two rear USB ports (the two that support wake-up on USB). If I have this external HDD plugged into one of the other two rear USB ports, then I don't get this problem.

3) I have two external USB HDDs. One works without issue (the one described above), however the second one, when I switch its power off after I have finished using it, then about 40% of the time my USB mouse stops working, and I have to unplug/replug the mouse to get it working again. The mouse is on a seperate USB port (one of the front two).

Are these known issues with the USB on this mobo, or could it be something else? These items (the USB HDD and my G5 mouse) worked fine without issue on my previous PC, so I know they are not faulty. My system is rock stable - the only problems I have are the 3 things I have outlined above.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Oh, and in case anyone is curious, I'm acutally one of the moderators over at the Futuremark forums (chrisinthesun20) - but I've posted here as you guys have a dedicated thread for this mobo model.

Regarding your USB issues, all I know is that you should avoid connecting input devices to the bottom two ports on the rear. Power is never cut to these two ports, in order to allow devices, like the remote, to wake the machine. Is there any way you can connect all your devices without using these two ports? It would be interesting to see if that resolves your issues.
