Quick question:

Just bought a Zalman VF900-CU for my video card, and the 3-pin fan connector for the cooler should go into which 3-pin connector on the mobo? CHA_FAN1/2 or PWR_FAN1/2? Or none of those? =P

Thanks!

hey guys, i'm having trouble with the JMicron's eSATA port not working in Sata II mode. when the hdd is placed inside the case connected to a regular SATA port (port 2 on ICH7R), HDTach shows the drive(400GB seagate 7200.10) is capable of a burst rate of 258.8mb/s. but when the same drive is placed in an enclosure connected to the eSATA on the JMicron, burst rates goes down dramatically to 135.2mb/s, but everything else (random access, ave read rate) remains the same.

I narrowed it down to the JMicron controller because when i connect the ext drive to another PC, burst rate is ~ 258.0mb/s. does SATA II need to be activated on the JMicron? I checked the bios and manual but couldnt find a solution.. tia.

Is there not a connector on the video card itself? I would think that the video card would want to control the speed of that fan.

1. Upgrade BIOS to version 1707, which includes Update JMicron option rom to 1.06.63
2. Try latest JMicron driver vers. 1.17.08.01 WHQL released by JMicron on Dec. 12, 2006

Hello, I have this board and have difficulty.
Why do I have to keep clearing my RTC Ram for hours(5 or more) just to get this boards to boot with any processor??

You definitely have a problem with your system, because that's not normal behavior. However, you need to provide some information before anyone here will be able to offer any advice. Provide a detailed description of your hardware, BIOS version, and operating system.

thanks for the suggestion. i'm already using bio 1707, and i just updated the JMicron to 1.17.08.01, but burst rate is still stuck at SATA I. not terribly important i know, since the transfer rate is what i should be concerned about. but i'm still curious as to what exactly it is that's limited the speed. btw, i've tried setting it to AHCI, and standard in the BIOS, and the result is the same.

There IS a connector on the video card, but the manual also states for you to plug into the motherboard if you want to connect the Fan Mate 2, which would be ideal.

Here is it's manual (go to step 8): http://www.zalman.co.kr/Upload/product/vf900_eng.PDF

I was just wondering if it's ok to plug it into either CHA_FAN1/2 or PWR_FAN1/2, and if so, which one? I'm going to guess PWR_FAN1/2? To be honest, I would just not use the Fan Mate 2 at all, effectively setting the cooler at 100% all the time, but I would assume that a) that reduces the overall life expectancy of the piece and 2) makes for a loud fan (despite being quiet by nature, and having a P180 case).

I think the CHA_FAN1/2 and PWR_FAN1/2 are mostly nomenclature. In any case, check the BIOS and see if that PWR_FAN shows up in one of those Q-fan options; if it does than it's okay to plug in on it. *Maybe* the PWR_FAN are simply for monitoring while the CHA_FAN allows for controlling.

Edit: Yeah im sorry this is completely off topic

Vista will be available to the general public starting Jan. 30th. Those who are already using Vista likely fall into one of these groups:

- MS Connect beta testers (they received a free copy)
- MSDN members
- Business users
- Pirates (Yaaaaaaar, mateys!)

Ah, I see. I think I'm actually just going to not use the Fan Mate 2 at all, since ATITools controls my fan speed depending on my GPU temp, so thanks anyways! =)

Phil - anyone?

Do you know, or has anyone used/tested the newer Intel Quad core CPUs on this MB?

Is the current bios, 1801, supportive of Quad core? I remember reading that the MB was 'able', providing the bios was avail/

Thanks,

Maria

Quad-core support was introduced on the P5WDH with BIOS 1403. However, many people on the xtremesystems forums had issues (not necessarily quad-core related) with 1801, so you might want to go with 1707.

What do you get when there's trouble: blank screen AFTER the video card has initialized, or no video card initialization at all, or the BIOS hanging somewhere along the way, like when it should have initialized the USB ports?...

Well, I finally did it. Replaced my P5W DH with an Intel 975XBX2, and I'm very impressed. It's recognised all my drives, in and out of RAID, my mirrors are installed and working with XP and performance is solid. Just in case anyone was watching...

Hey,

I was wondering what heatsink I should get for this motherboard that will fit and perform the best?

I was looking at the ninja rev. B, but seems like theres trouble putting it into the board, but heard its worth it? but I have no idea if it fits.

I use that Ninja B and found it simple to install. I have a slideout mobo tray and that helped installation. The upper left anchor would have been a bit hard to reach with fingers otherwise. The heat sink fits ok. The edge of the attached fan hangs over the inner most memory slot but the fan is easy to pop off.

I don't OC as yet but the unit is quiet. E6600 temp is between 23 and 26C usually ( on Asus and Everest. TAT will put it at around 35).

I need some serious help, here is a quick lowdown of whats going on:
Asus P5W DH Deluxe Mobo.
2 x LG GSAH22N DVDRW Drives
1 x Samsung SpinPoint T HD321KJ 320GB HDD hooked up too SATA1
On startup I get an audible beep (I guess that means no primary boot device?) then when everything posts I get the error saying no boot device detected. Then once I'm in BIOS it lists the hard drive as the primary master device and the dvdrw drives aren't listed at all. But when I go to the boot order menu they're listed HDD, DVD Drive, then just the CDROM drive.
The DVDRW Drives have 6 prong jumper selection of which I've put the top drives jumper on the right prongs and the second drives jumper on the middle prongs.
I've also gone to the advanced tab and checked to make sure the JMicron SATA/PATA controller is disabled, disabled the serial port address SATA is configured as standard IDE, and enhanced mode S-ATA+P-ATA.
So the problem is: Beep on startup, bios doesn't recognize boot device, all which means I can't install windows.
Please help!

I'm not sure you're actually having any problems. One short beep is normal.

If the HDD is unformatted, than it's normal that the BIOS sees no boot device. As for your optical drives, do you have them connected to the black or blue IDE port? The black port is on the JMicron controller, while the blue port is the native IDE port, on the ICH7R southbridge. With your setup, I would disable the JMicron controller and make sure both opticals are connected to the blue IDE port, configured as master/slave (set jumpers). Opticals connected to the blue port will be listed on the BIOS's main page. At this point, you'll want to set the boot order so that you can boot from the master optical, and pop in your Windows CD and proceed to install. No SATA drivers are required if running SATA as Standard IDE. You should be good to go.

I need some help here guys. Just built a new rig but on boot up it gets to the stage where the Windows Logo and that blue scrolling bar would be and restarts. I've tried 2 different drives so i know that's not the problem. I'm pretty sure it's not heat related either. System specs are as follows:

Asus P5W DH
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300
Leadtek 7900GTX Extreme 512MB
2GB OCZ PC5400 Gold
500W ATX Seasonic PSU

So can anyone shed any light on the problem??

Thanks, Rob

Hard to say what's wrong without more info, so I'll just ask a bunch of questions, in no particular order.

1) Is this happening on a fresh drive when attempting to install windows? You will have problems if you're trying to boot with a drive that has a windows install from a different machine.

2) Is your boot drive a SATA or a IDE/PATA. For best results, SATA boot drive should be connected to SATA1 (red port). If using a IDE/PATA drive, connect that to the blue IDE port.

3) Is your power supply properly connected. You need to have both the 20+4-pin ATX and 4-pin 12V connectors attached. Also, if your vidcard has a power connector, make sure that's connected, as well.

4) Have you a memtest diagnostic your mem? If not, you can grab memtest86 at
http://www.memtest.org

Download the ISO and burn the image to a CD. Boot with the CD and allow all 10 test to run. If you get any errors, run the 10 tests on each DIMM separately, to see which DIMM may be faulty.

That's all I can think of, at the moment.

I wanted to thank everyone who has posted here. Before I bought my components and built my system, I read this entire thread -- each and every entry. By doing so, I learned the tricks and pitfalls associated with this board. Because of you helpful folks, this was hands-down the easiest and most trouble free build I've done to date. Again, thank you.

The ONLY issue I had was with with Windows not recognizing my USB floppy drive during installation. (The MB would boot from it fine when Bios flashing, so this was a Windows issue, sigh.) Once I convinced a cantankorous old internal floppy drive to load the intel Raid drivers, I was set.

One tip that I can give is that it might be a good idea to connect the primary IDE cable (for those that use it) before instaling the MB in a case. Depending on the case layout, the sideways mounting of that connector can make for fat finger fumbling.

My system is:
ASUS P5W DH Delux (fashed to Bios 1707)
C2D E6600 stock cooling (for now)
Corsair XMS2: 2 x 1GB DDR2 800
Antec TruePower Trio 650
2 x WD Raptor 150 GB (16MB cache) as Raid 1
Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard with LCD Display
+ other misc stuff

I'm a very happy camper. Kudos to this thread.
