Yeah i gotta say thnx to phile to, hes been helping in this thread since page 1

I got a few questions, some of which relate to this motherboard and some of which probably shouldn't be in this thread but the people here are to helpful

Ok well if i remember correctly this mother board doesn't support crossfire x16 x16 its 16x and 8x when running crossfire correct? The thing i am worried about is running dual 1950xtxs or the new r600 (if it wasn't pushed back so much) in crossfire that will the x8 slot bottleneck the card or have the cards still not reached the full potential of pci-e?

second question,

The new r600 has had rumors going around to draw 270w and the 8800 already draws somewhere closing in on that range. Now i have a 620 watt enermax psu and i was wondering will it suffice for running an r600 or 8800 coupled with ym e6300 and other components? I have heard that even a 600 watt psu isnt enough for just one r600 ( i know we havent seen the real wattage draw on that card but taking the estimated 270w) but i have heard else where that a 450w psu will be comfy running a single of the new dx10 cards and that a good 650w psu could run a dual card setup of 8800 or r600s.

I just bought this psu last august and i really dont want to go out and buy a new one or have to run a secondary psu outside of the case.

Thnx savage

IMO, SLI and Crossfire are cash guzzling gimmicks. For twice the cash you don't get anywhere near twice the performance. Best to invest in the best single card you can afford. As for the PCI-E bus running crossfire, it is my understanding that a single card will run at x16 in either x16 slot, while both slots will run at x8 when running two cards in crossfire. I guess the board has only one x16 capable PCI-e bus, split into two ports.

Hello Phil,

Thanks for the detailed reply. (Thanks also to QuietRiot for your helpful reply)

I have taken the advice of both of you, and the Kingston RAM is on its way back to Newegg. I decided to go with the OCZ Platinum Revision 2 6400 RAM, and I've ordered it. I'm really looking forward to building the computer and testing it out on the actual applications I use daily. I'll take data on my four year old Pentium 4 2.4 GHz system, the new one at stock settings, and then the new one at whatever overclock settings I try that are stable and run cool enough.

One further question at this point, though. I don't recall seeing much here about the AI NOS Overclocking option on this board. It seems to make sense to only overclock when needed. Does the AI NOS actually work well, or is it just a gimmick? It seems to go up to 30% overclock, which is about where I expect to end up. I'll try it of course, and take data on my own applications with it enabled, to compare to my manual overclock settings, but is there anything I should know ahead of time, to watch out for? Any other setttings I should also change if I use the AI NOS? Or, are there reasons to avoid even trying it?

Thanks again for the help. This thread is great!

re: mem
You made the right choice. You'll be much happier with the OCZ kit. when you first boot the machine, the mem will be running slower than the rated DDR2-800, with 1.8v. Following the instructions I wrote in my previous response, set the mem to DDR2-800, and boost the voltage to 2.1v. You'll also want to manually adjust the timings, since the SPD has looser timings programmed. I think your kit is 4-4-4-12, but check the sticker on the DIMMs.

re: A.I. NOS
I've never tried A.I. NOS, and probably never will. The best way to ensure a stable overclock is to do it manually, in the BIOS. Also, you'll want to avoid using ASUS's A.I. Booster software. Terribly buggy.

Hi guys and, of course, our dear Phil!

may i ask HOW this Intel INF Update Utility [INFINST_AUTOL.EXE] Ver:8.1.1.1010 Dated 11/21/2006, would compare with the CURRENT VISTA INCLUDED Intel 975X chipset drivers for our P5W DH deluxe MB?

i ask this because 11/21/06, the date of the latest Intel that is available for downloading, seems like quite a while ago. As Vista only came out for consumers on 1/30/07, one would imagine that the INCLUDED Intel 975X chipset drivers/controllers would be rather fresh and new as well.

just curious and trying to learn. i fully understand that Phil, et al, suggests using the one from Intel (Ver: 8.1.1.1010).

thx!

The latest drivers for any Intel chipset, including the P5WDH's 975X, can be found on Intel's web site. Furthermore, the final Vista code was sent to manufacturing around November 1st, 2006, so Vista will not have the latest 975X drivers bundled.

Hi all. My system was built a while back and the E6600 is running at 3.06GHz with G.Skill DDR2 800 2x1GB ram. I have on order OCZ DDR2 1066 SLi certified 2x1GB memory. Can I expect a good OC?

Hey Guys,

Was hoping I could get some help.
I have been using the P5W DH now for awhile running WindowsXP fine on a WD74 Raptor and everything was great.
More recently I wanted to install 3xWD150 Raptors in Raid0 so I have gotten as far as setting up the Raid in the bios and all that jazz but when I got to do a fresh install of WinXP it doesn't see any drives to install on.

Is there a step I am missing? Sorry if this has already been answered, this thread is huge and hard to search through. Thanks for any help.

Assuming your other components are up to the task, your G.Skill could take you to FSB 400 before even having to overclock the mem. If your machine can't do FSB 400 with PC2-6400 memory, it's not likely to do so with PC2-8500.

I haven't ever built a RAID array, so I can't be of much help. However, I think there may be a RAID utility you need to run, in order to build the array, prior to installing Windows.

Ya, well I ran the "Ctrl+I" utility which set up the array. In the Bios it sees the drives and I have created the Raid setup. But when I get into the Windows install it says there are no drives to install Windows on

Hi! May I ask if anyone knows of a good and useful Vista compatible utility for temperature and other sensors/information? A few of the ones I checked out are either not compatible with Vista-32 or else not compatible with P5WDH Deluxe. Thx.

my newly built pc (6600 c2d, cruiser 800 2x1gb, 8800gts, etc) shut down/sleep when i left it on for the first time since i built it 2 days ago today i was only away for about an hour, so i thought it would be fine "unsupervised" since it ran well for the last 2 days.

i have a feeling that it has something to do with the lack of communications between the USB ports and the "wake up from sleep function". do you all think so? i saw the power led blinking, with all the internal case fan lights turned off (except the MB's green LED) - i've never seen the front power LED turned off or the internal fans AND lights turned off before (i've always turned my new pc off over the last 2 days in fear of it being on when i am away, so this was the first time that i was away for around 1 hour). after one press, the computer looked like it woke up: front power led stayed on (no more blinking), inside fans came on, and obviously the inside blue lights came on due to the fans coming on. BUT, the monitor did NOT come on, regardless of my switching the monitor on and off!!

after some research, i decided to push the power button once quickly. NOTHING happened. the power led stayed on. the computer will NOT turn off based on my single press on the power button! then, i decided to take a chance and pushed the power button on for around 4-5 seconds, this time, the computer turned off.

with the computer off, i decided to turn it back on after around 30 seconds or 1 minute. this time, the computer booted up, but it said that windows was turned off improperly or something to that effect, and it asked if i wanted to turn it on in safe mode or this or that. it said that if there's no answer in a certain number of seconds, it will restart in the "highlighted mode" which was restart windows "normally" or something similar to that. i clicked enter and it started in the "normal" mode and everything seems to work.

i then went into control panel and selected power options, and proceeded to select a power mode (i picked "balanced mode") and under that, selected NEVER GO TO SLEEP MODE. did i do the right thing?

i figured that for the time between now and Vista's Service Pack 1, i can live with this PC to NEVER go into sleep function, but i selected the screen to turn off in 20 mins. did i choose correctly? or did i choose my options smartly or did i choose poorly.

maybe i'm mistaken in that the usb ports were communicating w/the pc...just my speculation, but the mouse/keyboard (logitech wireless) had no effect on waking up the pc. ugh!

Hey guys I'm running into another problem with my board.

Basically if the bottom to USB ports are being used by something, say my keyboard or my G7 mouse charger, the mobo is booting the computer up by itself after I shutdown. Usually if I just nudge it or blow at the computer with my breath it'll turn on.

But when I don't use the bottom ports, the computer's fine.

Is there anyway around this auto-booting thing? Has anyone else been experiencing this? I searched the thread and I've read through most of it anyway, and I haven't seen this mentioned ( I hope). The problem was mentioned early on but there was no real way to fix it (from what I've seen).

You missed the part where those ports are rigged to start the computer.

Plug a hub into one of the ports that doesn't do that...

Yea I read that the ports are always on and whatnot for the remote startup.

I was hoping if there a way to turn that off, because I stupidly broke my case's front 2 usb ports by running into something that was plugged into it and I'm in need of more ports. I have a hub and that's no problem, but I'm trying to save as many USB ports as possible for an instance where I forget my hub, hence hoping that I can turn the remote boot part of the mobo off. Sorry if I wasn't clear.

Hi, i need some help and i hope some of you guys can do that for me.

I just bought a Asus P5W DH Deluxe from some guy on ebay, and i recived it a few days ago.
After openeing the case i saw to my regret that one of the ram "lock" pins was broken.
No harm in that, the ram is fairly firm equipped anyways.

But another thing was missing. The little thing that the NB heatsink is attached to was missing. Looks like it was broken off.

If in doubt about what im talking about check this image out:
Missing component

To my luck i have a welder and fair welding skills, and instead of going throuht a long and devistating Ebay, Paypal return process im interrested in getting the component as a spare part and repair the mobo myself...

But i dont know where to find that specific component. If anyone have any ideas where to buy a such componenet please let me know. Shipping to Denmark is also essential.

Hello All,

My Asus P5W has been up and running for over a week without no problems. Phew! I just installed the PC Probe utility last night to check the various temps of the mobo and CPU and everything looks good. I did notice that I am running the 1601 version of the BIOS which was released back in November. I think there have been two or three releases since the 1601 version was released. I am definitely a believer of "if it aint broke, don't fix it" but I wanted to check to see if there is any advantage to upgrading the BIOS to the newest rev.

Thanks, Bill

As I remember Vista would not boot if a couple PCI cards were installed or if Crossfire was being attempted. I didn't have that issue but a lot of people did and you can find stuff around on Google. I think it was 1601 or 1701 that fixed the Vista bug. In this thread they mention 1601 not fixing issue which means it would be the next one (1701 was it?) that fixed it
.

Oh and don't panic if Asus Probe tells you your cpu is 250C one day. That's just a little issue Probe and AI Booster have.
