im pretty sure that the delayed write failed has to do with XP's 'write-behind caching'. iirc, when you are attempting to save a file or something, i.e. in word, the file does not get written to the hard drive right away; it is sort of queued to do so later and stored in RAM. when the system is not doing any intensive tasks, i.e. during shutdown, the file/data is then written to the disk.

I just realized that i did a reinstall with my ich7r set to standard ide. should i bother switching it to AHCI and do a reinstall? are the performance gains worth it?

Maybe someone on here can help me. I just updated my bios today to the latest version 2406 and now my C2D E6600 is showing running at 2.13Ghz when I hit del to go into bios and under cpu info 2133mhz. I was at bios 1305 before and it always showed 2.4Ghz during the post and in the bios. Did anyone else experience anything like this?

I have an E6600, as well, and I stopped updating the BIOS at 1901. Later BIOSes appear to be geared more toward the quad-cores.

In any case, you'll want to check the AI Overclock area to see what your FSB is set to. It should read 266 (stock Core 2 Duo FSB). You can access the AI Overclock area by selecting Jumperfree and setting it to manual.

You may also want to verify that the CPU multiplier is set to 9 (stock for E6600). The CPU speed is derived from the product of the multiplier and FSB.

Let me know if you need any further assistance.

P.S. Boy, it's been a while since I've posted to this thread. Still loving my P5WDH.

Nope. There are essentially no performance gains. Now, if you wish to enable SATA hot-plugging, you will need to have the drives running in AHCI or RAID. Otherwise, the only other feature you would get in AHCI is NCQ, which appears to offer nothing in the area of performance gains in a single user environment.

This was taken from the ASUS forums about 2406 and the E6600

Hi Peter.

There's been a number of people reporting that the multiplier is incorrectly set with 2406 and 6600s.

In most other respects 2406 has proven to be more reliable and has removed many of the problems with recent BIOS releases failing to set and store certain BIOS values. These problems didn't affect everyone but caused big headaches for those affected.

smithy1185 you might want to check the ASUS P5W-DH forums

Phile, just to make sure I'm not wrong, your post info shows CPU: E6600 @ 2.4Ghz and then below that Speed: 2.4Ghz Cores: 2 right(or something similar, can't remember exactly)?

I will check the multiplier when I restart this but I did check and the FSB was at 266 still. I'm also checking out the Asus forums right now too.

Edit:Ok, this is sad but where do I found out what the multiplier is set at?

Edit:Well, I found how to adjust the multiplier and it was weird because it showed the actual value as 9 but when I manually set it to 9, I'm back up to 2.4Ghz!

Anyways, thanks alot phile and rgallant I was going insane with this.

to find the multiplier you could check the bios or use CPUZ which you should have, great free program.
also in the bios you should check to see if the power saving settings are set or not set after the new bios as they will slow your CPU down when not loaded :advanced>CPU settings>speedstep
it seems you were doing your update as I was replying, glad you have it fixed and it confrims a problem with 2406 and the E6600 with the Multi.

Speedstep will keep your CPU throttled down (by lowering the multiplier) until such a time as an application demands more juice. Enable Speedstep (EIST) if you're concerned with energy conservation and/or the reduction of wear and tear on your CPU.

Glad you got your earlier problem sorted out.

I have an E6600 and am running BIOS version 1901. Is there any point in my upgrading? Things admittedly work fine at the moment, but if there's some new functionality in newer updates I'd be interested to know. Thanks in advance!

Hi guys,

Just FYI, I successfully installed an E8400 (1333 FSB) processor on the P5W DH, using bios revision 2602. I had to re-install Windows though, because for some reason my video card was running at half clock. I should have known better than to try to upgrade a major piece of hardware without re-installing Windows

The P5W DH is the motherboard that just keeps on giving! This will tied me over until next generation socket CPU.

Thanks for taking the time to share that I'll be more confident when I eventually decide to upgrade my E6600. However, I want to upgrade to a quad core, so if anyone has success with one of those please let us all know

i just wish that the EIST functions would be put back in for the E8400. I may have to sell this guy soon

I should've checked forums before using the ASUS update program to update the bios.
My good old P5W DH died 2 days ago. (RIP, buddy)

But then, it was a good excuse for getting a new mobo!!!

What do you mean it "died"? You can get a new bios chip if you only screwed that up.

I stopped updating my bios at 2004. After that one it seemed like a lot of bios revisions had many issues. I think there is a new update utility that utilizes a flash drive. I keep seeing people in other forums say to use (they mention its on mobo disk but that must be latter version because its not on mine) that to perform update because it rolls back easier. I am debating tying a Penryn on my P5WDH but I have a earlier version and not sure it will even work.

Bumping an old thread.

I just picked up a q6600 g0 stepping from Fry's and was looking to see if my P5W DH Deluxe was adequate for running this quad core.

Anyone have some sage advice for running this combo or should I look to replace my P5W DH Deluxe?

Yes, I have the P5W DH Deluxe with the 2206 bios and a Q6600, B3 stepping works very well, have had it up to 3GHZ with standard cooling.

Asus' chart shows that the B3 stepping Q6600 works after BIOS 1506, and the G0 stepping works after BIOS 2205. So update before you put the chip in.

I also have an Asus P5KC with a Q6600 G0 stepping at home.

I have this board with the Q6600 G0 stepping... I have a mild overcloak of 3Ghz on it and everything is running fine.

there's also a new bios for this board that supports the Q9300 and Q9450 :Q;

I apologize if this has been posted before but I can't find it anywhere in this giant thread.

I just got a new DVD-R drive, a Samsung S203N (my first SATA optical drive). It worked great under XP 32-bit for the first week. But then I upgraded to Vista 64-bit and while it technically works (it can read and write), there is something wrong.

When you load a disc, generally you expect 3 things to happen:

1) icon on disc drive updates to reflect disc
2) volume label updates to reflect disc
3) right-click context menu updates to reflect type of disc

This is not happening. For example, if I boot the computer up into Vista and then put a data DVD into the drive, these things are not happening. BUT I can still open the drive and browse/use its contents.

However, if I restart the computer with a disc in the drive, it WILL show as in the drive once Windows starts. But if I then take that disc out of the drive and either replace it or just leave the drive empty, it still shows the previous disc as being in there (and its relevant context menu).

So in other words the "Computer" explorer only seems to scan once at reboot for the contents of the disc and disc type, to update the icon, volume label, and context menu. Other software (such as DVDShrink) does recognize the volume labels of newly inserted discs, even if Windows Explorer doesn't.

I've only had this drive for a week... and I don't have this issue with my 3+ year old Lite-On IDE drive if I try to use it with Vista.

I updated all my JMicron RAID drivers from the ASUS site for Vista 64 and this should have the SATA working fine. Any ideas?

Aagh, this is driving me so crazy. I've spent every bit of free time I had the last 3 days in front of my computer either searching for info about this online, or updating my BIOS and trying every possible solution.

I don't know how the Windows SATA controller driver could be bad. I am able to communicate with the drive, and OTHER software ( DVDShrink for example) will recognize newly inserted discs by updating the volume label. It is only the Windows explorer file browser which will not recognize volume labels unless I reboot the whole machine with the disc in.

ok heres the problem,

Was running a dual core conroe e6600 on this morther board with bios 0701 which looks to be the oldest bios that would run a dual core, this was pre installed when bought. So i just got a quad core QX9650 and needed to update the bios as when i popped processor into the motherboard and tried to boot it. It would only get as far as the nram or vram calculating(cant remember which one). So i downloaded the latest firware from the asus website which is bios version 2704. I stuck the new bios onto a disc and let it boot with Use built-in EZ Flash on the asus motherboards. All went fine and completed, so it went to re-boot but the pc only booted as far as a blank black screen and thats it wont go any further.

I know what your going to say, did you back up my bios. No i forgot! How can i flash an older version of bios to this or is the motherboard for the bin?

So can anyone help, Please

thanks in advance

I just bought an Asus P5W DH Deluxe (stock BIOS 2302) and 2 x 1 GB OCT Platinum rev. 2 PC-6400, which has timing of 4 4 4 4 15 and lists voltage at 1.9 - 2.1.

I've scanned through this entire thread and want to adjust my SPD memory timings to DDR2-800 at 4 4 4 4 15.

Do I have to automatically jump up to 2.1V, or should I step up and test to see what is MemTest stable?
