I just got a new DVD-R drive, a Samsung S203N (my first SATA optical drive). It worked great under XP 32-bit for the first week. But then I upgraded to Vista 64-bit and while it technically works (it can read and write), there is something wrong.

When you load a disc, generally you expect 3 things to happen:

1) icon on disc drive updates to reflect disc
2) volume label updates to reflect disc
3) right-click context menu updates to reflect type of disc

This is not happening. For example, if I boot the computer up into Vista and then put a data DVD into the drive, these things are not happening. BUT I can still open the drive and browse/use its contents.

However, if I restart the computer with a disc in the drive, it WILL show as in the drive once Windows starts. But if I then take that disc out of the drive and either replace it or just leave the drive empty, it still shows the previous disc as being in there (and its relevant context menu).

So in other words the "Computer" explorer only seems to scan once at reboot for the contents of the disc and disc type, to update the icon, volume label, and context menu. Other software (such as DVDShrink) does recognize the volume labels of newly inserted discs, even if Windows Explorer doesn't.

I've only had this drive for a week... and I don't have this issue with my 3+ year old Lite-On IDE drive if I try to use it with Vista.

I updated all my JMicron RAID drivers from the ASUS site for Vista 64 and this should have the SATA working fine. Any ideas?

I don't use this board any more , went to sli ,but this board was very picky on how to set up the drives ,there are jumpers ,boot drives should be on sata1,
-if it was me , I know the asus forums on this board has many cases of what works and what does not , so it could be a good place to follow up if no one can help you here ,
-also to the fact your using the Jmicron drivers lead me to believe your set up is not simple
-when I used the board , sata DVD drives where not a option , as I run 4 x drive raid 0 ,
but lots of people had problems with the EZ raid config. screwing up the sata ports for the sata dvd drives

-but to get help you really have to list all your drives and where they are connected.
-and maybe its just a vista issue .

I've scanned through this entire thread and want to adjust my SPD memory timings to DDR2-800 at 4 4 4 4 15.

Do I have to automatically jump up to 2.1V, or should I step up and test to see what is MemTest stable?

Test it @ 1.9v if it fails go to 2.0v but 2 x 1 should run at 1.9v at rated timings -overclocking it you can max. it at 2.1v or 4x1 gigs

I hope this is the right place to ask this question.

I need to reset the CMOS on my P5W DH motherboard. Can I do that by turning the power off, unplugging the power cord and holding the power button in and then just moving the jumper cap 10 seconds? Or, must I also remove the button battery?

What could happen to the motherboard if I did not remove the battery, but just moved the jumper?

The reason that I ask is I cannot seem to figure out how to remove the battery. Does it take a special tool? It seems to be in there rather snug. On my old MSI motherboard the battery just slid out. This one seems to require that I do something with the two little prongs. ?????

Thanks for your help.

My system now freezes when under load after running fine for almost 2 years. After extensive testing using memtest and orthos I have narrowed the problem down to running the memory in dual channel mode. System runs fine with 2 gigs of ram in single channel mode. Updating the BIOS did not help. Crucial Memory tech support is convinced this is a motherboard issue. I believe it is probably the motherboard or maybe the memory controller on the processor. Does any one have any ideas or is it time to try and RMA the board?

System specs:
ASUS P5WDH deluxe
E6600 C2D
Scythe Ninja 2
4 GB Crucial Ballistix
EVGA 8800 GTS 512
OCZ 550 modstream PS
Audigy 2ZS Platinum
2 Seagate 320Gb 7200.10 HDDs
Pioneer 18X DVD burner

2 things you could try

1- clean the pins on the memory ,When I first used the P5W -dh , 1 of two pairs of sticks that were only 6 months old, niether stick would not work in any socket , until I cleaned them , I used printer paper or a coffee filter and there is a static risk. I thought the sockets were crap, not to make connection after reseating the sticks many times.

2-[under load ] could be heat on the chipsets , not so easy with the heat pipes, just built a nvidia chipset system and reseatted the heat pipes when I took it out of the box ,had I known what crap was between the heat pipes and the chip sets on the P5W I would have reseatted that also ,as others said to do at the time but I didn't run a large over clock as I do now,
but onces you take it off you will wonder how they ever worked , but for now open up the case and blow abig fan in there and see if your still having the same problems. if it's heat ,reseat the heat pipes. with MX-2 TM

Thanks rgallant for the reply. I had not really considered heat as the problem because my temps were the same as usual. However I took your advice and put a box fan on the open case, and heat is definitely the problem. I believe my graphics card is heating up the north and southbridge chipsets. I replaced a 7900GTO with the 8800GTS a few months ago and it runs quite a bit hotter. I upped the fan speed on the GPU with riva tuner and have not had any more lockups under load with a closed case. How much trouble is it to redo the thermal paste on the heatpipes? I have been thinking of upgrading my case, so I may go ahead and reseat the heatpipes while I have everything apart.

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit. I currently have 3 GB of RAM installed. My question is: Will this motherboard and this OS allow me to use 4 GB of RAM? I am using BIOS 1201.

If so, what brand of RAM have you found that will boot right up and not require any voltage adjustment. Or do you get the best performance with higher voltage RAM?

Thanks.

I guess this forum is dead. I have asked two questions (8/17 and 8/25) without a single response. This is a good thread, to bad it is so dead. Time to move on.

turn off power cord. move the jumper. wait 10 sec. put jumper on original position. put the power cord back. BIOS and CRT cleared! and your overclock profiles are intact!

Memory remmaping will actually make you see 3,25GB of 4GB installed when running a 32 bits OS. You need to use 64bits Vista for full acess of the 4GB installed- no blame on ASUS- no way around it with windows- I use 4x1gb sticks at XP 32bits- see 3,25GB on OS, couldnt be happier after 2 years with this MOBO!

hi guys,

Ive been having a very strange experience with my MB. i own it for about 2.5 years now and since i got it, it would take forever to POST. now, this doesnt happen all the time. some of the time it goes strait through and sometimes it can just sit there for up to 10 minutes!
ive tried taking out everything connected to it for troubleshooting and now that i bought a new video card i could even test it with a diffrent video card.
two weeks ago ive decided to OC the cpu and since then the POST has gotten MUCH faster but it would still hang sometime for up to 1 minute (big improvment, heh)

the only things i cant test is diffrent memory (but memtest and 2.5 years of intensive gaming says they are ok) and CPU (see memory comment)

just a note: after windows loads everything works great. no issues AT ALL! but i dread restarting.... who know when will the system be back up ?

my spec:
Motherboard: asus p5w dh delux
CPU: e6400 @ 3.00ghz
RAM : 2x 1gb corsair 800mhz cl4 @ 2.1v
Video Card: hd 4870 1gb toxic GDDR5
PSU: enermax liberty 620W
Monitor pilot 22" vga connection
Hard drives: WD 200gb + WD 320GB + samsun 1TB
Optical Drives: LG dvdrw
Additional PCI cards:creative x-fi fatality1
Number of fans present: 5

So can anyone help, Please

I have version 0801 if you still need it.

But I'm assuming you solved your problem. I'm interesting in a QX9650 for my P5W DH Deluxe; did you ever get it to work?

Thanks.

I just got a Q9650 working in this board. Here's what I did:

1) Update the BIOS to 2801.
2) Install CPU
3) Restart; it detects the new CPU and sets everything back to defaults
4) Enter Setup, F10 to restart, and...
5) Dead! I forgot to disable all of the advanced features in the BIOS!
6) Unplug, pop out batter, wait 10 seconds, start again
7) BIOS complains about losing its mind, the time, etc.
8) Enter Setup, disable EIST, etc. etc.
9) Restart, and I'm at 3.0 GHz * 4 CPUs.

I'll try to overclock some tomorrow.

Here's the CPU-Z info: http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/4967/q9650ba1.jpg

Hi folks; This is my first post on this forum.

I built my system in 6/07 and love it.
Specifications:
P5W DH Deluxe 1.04g board with 2004 bios
2 Gig G Skill ram 2x1Gb
C2D E4300 @2.4Ghz
Seagate 7200.10 250Gb hard drive SATA
LG SATA DVD-RW
Evga Geforce 7600GS video card.

I'm planning some upgrades to my little darling.
I plan on moving to a Q6600 processor, hopefully getting a G0.
I need more RAM Gskill again but which ones? I have a choice of 2x2Gb HK @1.8 1.9v or PK @2.0 2.1v both 4,4,4,12, I'm leaning in the direction of the HK, but which one would be better in a 4x2Gb setup?
Next on the list is the video card that I want to replace with this one
SAPPHIRE 100249L Radeon HD 3850 1GB 256-bit GDDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card -
and the hard drive to be replaced with this 2x SAMSUNG Spinpoint F1 HD103UJ 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM in RAID1.
Naturally the upgrade will include a 64 bit OS (probably Vista...yuck).

Questions:
1. Any problem with the hardware listed above? A TR Ultra 120 Extreme will cool the processor.
2. Can I reach 3.2Ghz using 400x8 stable without over volting anything important?
3. Should I re do my NB Heat sink with AS Ceramique? How difficult will it be to remove after a year of use?
4. Should I flash my bios to 2801, update to 2406 or stay with 2004?
Thanks for this great forum and any help anyone can give me.

Problem

Slightly off topic...

This thread served me immensely 2.5 years ago when I built my current system with P5W DH.

I'm considering a new system with P6T, and was trying to find the "Official P6T Thread"... and there is none (unless I searched wrong). What baffles me is that the official thread for a nearly 3-year old motherboard is still active and on the front page, but there are many newer more popular mobos with no official thread.

What exactly determines whether or not a mobo gets an official thread?

Sadly, this evening there was a loud pop immediately followed by my monitors going blank. Smelling the faint scent of something burning I cut power to my computer.

Now, the little LED on the motherboard is on but the computer won't turn on. It won't do anything, not even start the fans spinning, let alone give me some indication of what's wrong....I've tried the usual course of unplugging it, pulling the battery and moving the clip to clear CMOS. So far, no luck.

What else should I try?

It may yet be a dead PSU but if it is the motherboard, what you would suggest replacing it with? Also, will my raid array (a simple mirrored array created in EZBackup) plug right in to a new system without trouble or will it need serious work?

I swapped in a friends PSU and sure enough, my P5W DH Deluxe is still going strong.
