How do guided rockets work for attack choppers?

Also, I've noticed a trend in AC-AC battles where the pilot is able to snipe me out of the cockpit or gunner seat with the rockets from quite a distance away. I've been in situations where both me and another person were both killed IN our respective seats and our chopper wasn't even destroyed.

you get them CLOSE to a vehicle and they will guide themselves in for the hit

-Adjusted the F35's Center of Mass and Hover Engine for more stable, level flight in all flight modes.
-Updated the F35 weapon systems to be consistent with the other Jets.
-The F35 will now only attempt to enter Hover at low altitudes, though it will maintain the hover until forward flight is resumed, even if it reaches high altitude.

thank god that plane is a POS

-Increased the locking distance for AGM Missiles for Jets when locking on laser designated targets

yay. using guided was pointless verse rocket pods. still might be, but you had to get so close to the AA vehicles it was a death sentence to try and use a guided against them

there is alot of stuff I'm very IFFY about, especially all the anti air and countermeasure changes.

they nerfed the jet gun vs helo's to just a bit better than it was before launch, guided rockets now wont work vs aircraft/helos but rockets are more accurrate now....could be good could be bad

Yea, looks like I can't pick off choppers anymore with rockets lol good change though.

What I'd like to see changed is removing the ability of Su27 and F18 being able to basically glide without stalling while trying to kill choppers. The heavy brake spam of EVERY jet pilot now is annoying.

If you fire your rockets to close proximity to an enemy helo they'll guide themselves on-target. I find that shooting above their position tends to work best since most pilots spam the w key to try and gain altitude on you. The proper counter is to drop down to 25m and use below radar, while switching between rockets and AA missiles.

If you're not sure how to aim guided rockets, use this as a general rule of thumb: center of the "I" reticule for the Viper and a quarter of an "I" above the top of the Havoc's. If you switch to AA missiles, you'll need to go into 3rd person and back to reset the "I".

Much of this will probably change post-patch.

Fly higher and stay in friendly air space. The best way to counter those jets is to get lockons on them as soon as they fly within range. Flying higher also gives you room to drop like a rock if they try to glide in for a kill. My favorite trick is to swap to the gunner seat and fire a TV missile, simultaneously cutting throttle/losing altitude since the pilot seat is empty.

Yesterday, I died 5 times jumping over a small boulder. I jump over it, BOOM I die and it says "bad luck"

I hate you "bad luck", especially when I die when I get run over my own jet that I bailed out of. It shouldn't be too hard how to figure out I died.

Not that this is combat related in BF2, but one of the only real flaws in the jet flight model was poor performance at low speed, you stalled and crashed at a higher speed than you should have.

Whereas BF3, like in most things, takes it to the opposite extreme, which allows jets to basically almost stop in midair in order to have a better shot at things.

Thanks for the GR tips! That's probably what allows enemy pilots to snipe me out of my seat.

You bring up a question I've always had about the "I" in the chopper HUD and the circle thing in the jets. I've picked up on the fact that my rockets don't always shoot in the direction of the rocket cursor, but exactly what does the floating "I" tell me about the choppers firing trajectory and velocity? Likewise, what does the circle in the jets indicate?

Assuming your targeting reticule isn't messed up your rockets will always fly along the path of the I. If the I is leaning towards the left or right it just means that your vehicle isn't flying level. I'm assuming by circle you mean the pip for the jet's 20mm cannon. This is a predictive reticule for the cannon but I tend to rely more on instinct in the heat of battle.

Your point is definitely valid, but one thing I will say that the more you play the game, the less you have to rely on the maps know where to click to spawn.

The biggest thing for me is that if you are unlucky and select a teammate who dies as you are about to hit the button to spawn on him it drops you automatically on the last point you spawned on. Just stay on the spawn screen damnit - I don't want to have to run my ass 3/4 across the map!

Now I can be a NINJA again! :ninja:

I missed those days of flanking a squad or group and knifing 5 soldiers in a row...

Heh - I remember swiping someone with the knife with the 'hit' symbol three times and he still didn't die! I however did get shot in the face with a pistol after the third hit

Having read through the changes:
-I am glad to see that getting up from prone is faster. So many times I have died from a grenade/being shot after a revive because it takes so damn long to get up
-I like the bipod assignable key. I stopepd using it for the most part because the autodeploy would kick in (and often result in my death due to bipod deploy times) when I just wanted a quick zoom in on an enemy
-The AN-94 change might be nice. I'll have to give that a try again
-Wait- they made the L85A2 MORE accurate? By far my favorite gun and its already very accurate so this suprised me a bit (but did make me very happy)
-Players can't auto enter SOFLAM? Does that mean we now have to stay by it?
-I'm suprised no one mentioned the mortar deployement change:
The M224 Mortar can no longer be deployed in an area that is out of combat for another team like a home base or other protected spawn
Should be an interesting change. Between that and the MAV the metro grind fests will change a bit

Also like the quick weapon swap. I died a many times from delay in switching weapons.

I think what they mean is when you place it you don't automatically go into the PDA view. Now you can place it then move to cover before using it.

I see he is no fan of the F35.

And it appears if things arent going his way he doesnt hang around:
Win Loss Ratio 6.18 Quits 31%

So much of the air battle is dependent on your ground team. If your ground team is rolling the opposition they don't have time to sit there and paint your with stingers all day, and your team is most likely annoying the other teams jet.

I'm a semi decent jet pilot and I get pissed when people brag about shooting me down when their team is up by 300 tickets, and I've got a constant missile tone while they hunt me down.
