I liked flying heli's in BF2, not so much in BC2. Although a big annoyance with BF2 is if you happen to nudge a tree...INSTA-DEATH.

Me neither. But I think it goes something like this:

Battlefield 3 Best Game of 2011

It’s official. Battlefield 3 will be the best game released this year. So says EA CEO John Riccitiello.

Speaking at the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference, Riccitiello conceded that EA lost the market leading position it once had with Medal of Honor, but added, "we’re after it now”.

"I’ve made no excuse for the reality that I want market leadership in the first-person shooter game business,” he said. "In many ways I feel that we created the first mass market first-person shooter with Medal of Honor and unfortunately with the transition to the PS3 era we lost that. We’re after it now.

"There’s a great thing about an annual franchise, whether it’s us or our competition; when you’ve got that annual franchise it’s a meal ticket, it can generate a great deal of income.

"One of the problems with an annual franchise is you don’t take the time to reengineer the underlying codebase so that it’s as ‘next-generation’ as it can be,” he added.

"We think there’s a window of opportunity here. We’ve been investing for three years to build Battlefield 3. I think it will stand up as the best product in the industry this year… and we’re going dead at ‘em.”

Battlefield 3's impressive Frostbite 2 engine has been described by EA as "incredible technology that takes animation, destruction, lighting, scale and audio to new heights”.

Battlefield 3 will feature 64-player multiplayer on PC and 24-players on console.

Recent tweet from demize99: "@fausto412 @l_twin @gustavhalling I firmly believe when you play #bf3 you'll wonder how commander ever fit into team play to begin with. "

This does not look good. Man, this guy is known to troll from time to time, but this one can't possibly be a troll...so, with that said, is it really wise to leak that there's no commander and force us to wait to hear what's replacing it? This will make for a lot of doomsaying!

yeah that really sucks unless the replacement is awesome

the auto commander on homefront seems like it might be cool(ish), maybe they are going that route with more AI aides

I'm thinking the squad leader will get some commander-ish functions. That's more people, right?

Commander was good for overall command. Get the different squads to where they are needed, not that most would follow. In BC2, it seems people are just running around with no idea of the overall situation. One guy starts capping a point and 2 squads worth of guys run to the point freeing up the other point for the rest of the other team.

yeah.

they really need SOMEONE /SOMETHING guiding players that has the big picture and can order other squads around

a good BF server with a decent commander was great, I used to play it all the time, and as long as 3-4 squads did as suggested it worked out great.

Of the new gaming rig? 130w idle, huh? I'd think you could get that down to 110w even with the dual 5870s. What is it? The high-speed fans? The fancy lights? The jet engine???

yeah I havent messed with any power settings yet at all. but from what i read the dual 5870's account for 54 of those watts

my general hardware thread has some pics of it, but I got some more goodies OTW.....

My guess is they'll build in more communication options (working in-game voice, anyone, and how about voice chat between squad leaders?). The problem with commander, which I played very often in BF2, was that the commander was basically out of the game, playing more of an RTS than a shooter. It will be much more interesting to have squad leaders work together using voice commands and keyboard shortcuts rather than a full-screen command view. Anyone ever seen a painting of George Washington with his head down in a map far behind the front as his troops cross the Delaware River to take on the British?

I didn't think so! This is what he looked like: http://historynotes.net/2010/10/geo...ng-the-delaware-river/us-washington-deleware/.

something I do hope for, for more relaxed games is the ability for everyone to talk. Or at the very least team talk. Even if BC2's had ever worked it was annoying because it was squad only. I can see the advantage to it, but I was never going to play it competitively and neither were 90% of the rest of the players. Ability to talk to your squad or the whole team would be neat as well.

I would like voice activated squad talk and PTT for team talk.

maybe if only squad leaders could talk to the whole team it would be better with less 12yr cod style voice spamming

umm guys think about it, 32 man teams, you can't have team talk. Some people are going to want to talk about the game while others might just want to chat. Witha squad you can at least move to another squad.

AFAIK, the next big date for news is February 23rd. The German magazine Gamestar(.de) has a cover stoy to be released that day, also some Xbox web site that I can't find the reference to right now.

Anyway, GameStar.de posted a short preview blurb with high-res cover art here:

In German - Google Translated to English

GameInformer has another article up today: Sustaining A Legacy: The Battlefield Strategy

Partial Summary of the GameStar Battlefield 3 cover article.

The worldwide interest in Battlefield 3 is very high so I made a summary of the most important information of the GameStar cover story (Issue 04/2011). First of all let me start with a comparison to the article Matt Bertz wrote for GameInformer. German editor Fabian Siegismund also played the demo level but describes it in another way and gives more detail to the destruction. Here is an example: when the huge building collapses during the earthquake it buries and destroys a Blackhawk helicopter. Patrick Bach says that debris can hurt characters. Important here: we are talking about the singleplayer. Not tested or confirmed for the multiplayer (Bach: "We'll see")!

Talking about the multiplayer the text contains a short summary about the multiplayer aspects editor Siegismund was able to see. I’ll give you that aspects in form of a list.

* Most important fact but most likely a typo or mistake: 32 players for the console.
* At a screen there were four classes with five slots for equipment. No further word about the details of the equipment ist given
* Siegismund says that he has seen a F-16 and a Su-27 Jet. Important here: there is a render / picture at the article that shows a F1-8 Super Hornet and not a F-16. Don’t know if this means the existence of both jets or a typo.
* Siegesmund talks about a “Replay-Function which was also included in Battlefield 2”. In our opinion he is talking about the Battlerecorder (as a function to replay whole games). His statement concerning this function: “DICE is playing around with a feasible version for BF3”. The function is not confirmed.
* Sound: DICE is working with a revised system for the sound that enables players to detect from where a vehicle or enemy soldier is coming. Every object (aka tank, helicopter has up to 80 soundchannels with different sound from different angles.
* Singleplayer: there will be Quicktime-Events where you have to push the mouse buttons to win a fight. The example here: an enemy tries to stab you with a knife and you have to defend you (knock him down / kill him).

That’s it for now. I may add some aspects (SP) later but I wanted to get the news out quickly.

Update

* One of the player models has a tattoo at the right forearm (SP possibly). Looks really cool.
* The M16 at Page 22 has no notch and is adjusted to semi fire (1st Picture of this news) (Thx MaxFragg)

Pic 1 - Pic 2

I noticed the German version seemed a bit wordier, so I wanted to see for myself what the person that summarized the article in English might have left out. So, for shits-and-giggles, here is the Google Translation version of the original BF-Games.net German article:

Tense scene waiting for the Battlefield to new information about Battlefield 3 , and hopes are also drawing on the forthcoming cover story of the game star. As hardcore fans of course we have no ways and means spared to get the report in the March edition of the fingers. And thanks to a nice magazine vendor has even worked. We have worked through the nine pages and compared them with the report from game informer. Is it right not to read much news, but one is addressed the most hotly debated issues: the classes.

Four classes in multiplayer
As expected, editor Fabian Siegismund same demo mission as your colleagues from game informer has played, but the report offers at least some pieces of information to the multiplayer. In a start-up screen during the presentation of four classes were to be seen with (text) "five equipment kits. Probably Siegismund mean by that secondary slots for weapons and specializations, as well as in Bad Company are 2 available. There are, however, six slots.

Replay function aka Battle Recorder
Another extremely important initial information on the Battle Recorder, the victories of mouth as a replay function is called. The text here reads: "The already existed in Battlefield 2, DICE is now experimenting with a usable version for Battlefield 3. A real confirmation that's not, but both fans of machinima and the eSports community and anti-cheat can hope again. For all three groups, the recording of demos is extremely important.

F-16, F-18, Su-27 and Solo Mission
Another point in the multi-box is the first confirmation of specific aircraft. Here is made to the General Dynamics F-16 and Sukhoi Su-27. What is interesting about this statement is the following aspect: in the article is a fighter jet imaged at it but not an F-16 is but an F/A-18 E / F Super Hornet (thx MaXFraGG). Also important: in the report as a solo single-player mission is mentioned in one of the jets.

More details on the Sound
For many players also extremely important to the topic of sound is also here, the report includes more details. As a picture is clear, objects such as tanks or other vehicles are assigned to multiple sound channels that play depending on the position of the player to the object. There are about 80 of these objects for individual channels to make the soundscape as realistic as possible. The article does not address the question of whether Battlefield Bad Company 3 as 2 no longer relies on hardware acceleration.

Confusion over number of players for the console
For most discussions of the contribution will not make the multiplayer issues and sound, but the little details. The image of the jet that does not match the description in the text, the lack of sight on the screen shot of the M16 (see scan), but above all, a sentence is only 64 players on our favorite platform Konsoleros have to make do with 32. And that's not the point is hidden, but rather the number is officially responsible for the console that is not 24 and 32nd

Last words - or why the purchase is worth
On the contribution we have said and actually most of you might think the walk to the kiosk would not pay anymore. As a true fan of the series, I must disagree vehemently rejects. The screens of the player models (which shine next to the overall look by the way, details such as tattoos) simply give printed from a very different image than scanned. This is the description of the demo mission by Fabian Siegismund the same way that Matt Bertz, but in some places, rich in detail. Off in a duel (right and left mouse button), the bombers: For example, in describing a Quick Time Events defuse the bomb before the earthquake.

Two sides to Play4Free
Final argument for the purchase are two sides of Battlefield Play4Free, that ends the report. Once a site has an editor Siegismund also looked at the Battlefield online clone and structure and procedure describes the game, which is by DICE and EA still under an embargo. Again, there are some nice screens.
