In theory, the fact that you have to choose between air to ground missiles and air to air should bring some balance. In theory even a good pilot against a not so good pilot should have a mild disadvantage if the other guy has AAM and he doesn't. In theory this should force one jet on each team to use AAM, which, unless the cannon is overpowered, and will prevent them from ground raping.

Of course, sometimes in BF2 jets would simply completely leave each other alone and just ground rape.

At any rate, I would have said that Beta would have address these theories but...oh, wait...no, it won't, we're having an OM beta again. Which has no jets.

Does anyone know if your BF3 Soldier name can be different than your Origin user name? I downloaded the Origin beta today and accidently registered a different Origin user name and there is no way to change it!

I want to use a user name for BF3 that I've been using since the original Counter-Strike. I use this username for ALL my first person shooters...:'(

I believe yes, your soldier name can be different than your Origin name. At least it better be b/c I have had the same name like you for years and people know me by it. In BC2 you have to log into EA, and then it prompts you to create a Solider Name, so hoping it's the same in BF3. Will find out soon.

I've often wondered this myself. Sure, they're fun and all, but they can drastically decay gameplay, especially in pubs. First, there's the ground raping. No need to debate that further. Second, there's the fact that you get a fucking line at the jet's spawn point, so you have a bunch of twats contributing to jack shit. Then when one lucky SOB gets the jet and takes off, he'll probably be shot down by his teammates, OR, his teammates will continue to hang around until he dies, hoping they'll be the next lucky SOB.

Notice that none of this involves the map objective, other than the ground raping. In the best case scenario, you get a couple jets in the sky dogfighting with each other instead of ground raping, in which case you have two separate games going on at the same time: the objective on the ground, and Top Gun in the air. Fun (for the pilots), but stupid IMO.

Sorry, I probably didn't make myself clear. My point was that the guy was complaining what the jets are able to do and if you take away their function as air support, then there's no real purpose of having them. I have no problem what so ever with a jet and agood pilot coming down on a control point and clearing out all the baddies trying to take it.

No, I got your point - I was just using it to make the point of my own that, while cool and interesting, I don't think jets have a balanced place in this game (based on my experiences with BF2).

They didn't necessarily have to remove bombs, but being able to fly back and reload bombs in 20 seconds is extreme, they can rape you off the flag you were trying to cap and reload their bomb so fast they can bomb you before you even leave your respawn flag. They could have used methods like landing to rearm to increase the bomb reload time.

10-4

I think if they don't have jets then the game moves closer to COD than it already has.
I really think they should slow jets down. In bf2 it was easy to get from one side of the map to another in a matter of seconds. In ' 42 those planes where slow and took forever. Also the maps seemed like they were bigger.

If Back to Karkland is out before end of year I will be a happy boy.

The thing that is going suck about back to karkand is that it will not be part of the main game. It's going to be like Vietnam where you are either playing back to karkand, or BF3. Basically splitting the community in half.

Do you guys see your BF3 pre-order anywhere in your Origin account? I don't see it at all. I've placed a ticket with support, will let you know what they say.

I think that, partially, the "splitting the community" argument is a false one. However, it's also partially true, and here's how:

If you can't rotate all the maps on your servers, and you want to run the Karkand maps when they come out, you will have to either stop running base maps OR rent a second server. That's extortion, number 1, and number 2, that causes there to suddenly and magically be more servers than are necessary simply because, again, the clans are forced to rent more servers. I mean, within weeks there will be enough servers to meet player demands for a place to play and yet, then comes Karkand and then suddenly there's a lot more servers and a lot will sit empty.

Mine shows up, you may have an issue.

Where does it show up? Under My orders? Is this in Origin itself or the webpage?

I have the confirmation e-mail from EA from Aug 13 for the pre-order. If there's an issue, it should do the clear it up.

We plan on having 3 servers. A Rush, A Conquest and yet to be decided on.

Rush will be 32 players vs Conquest 64, right there creates an issue if you decide to run a mix-mode server. In regards to Karkand, I'm sure there will be plenty of 24/7 Karkand servers.

When you pre-ordered, did you make sure you pre-ordered the download version and not the physical copy version?

We currently have 3 BC2 servers and I believe we get some deal on them. So, we plan to convert them to BF3. From experimentation, we found with BC2, people love Rush and especially the map Valparaiso. So, we run two rush servers with different map rotations and a 24/7 Valparaiso server. The 24/7 Valparaiso server is almost always populated. We tried Conquest only and mixed mode but population drops when the map/mode changed gave us feedback on what was popular.

Back in the BF2 days, we had severs based in Seattle, Chicago and NY to give everyone access to low ping servers. We had Vanilla, Special Forces, 24/7 Karkand/Sharqi Pennisula servers. And briefly an Armored Fury and Wake Island servers.

We'll see how we handle BF3 and the maps. But it's possible we might make one server only 32 players and we could have it mixed mode. It really depends on the quality and fun of the maps in their particular modes.

Off topic, but what are the names of your server, and where are they located?

Server Names are The Candy Van, The Candy Van2 and The Candy Van3.

1 is in Seattle and 2 and 3 are in Dallas(I believe). The Seattle server and one of the Dallas servers will stay in their current location but we may move one over on the east coast so that our European players can get a better ping.
