what??? NO! they shoudl continue to allow that type of customization. if you dont like it, get on a different server that plays how you like it. why would you want that to go away? if you like that shit get it on 360

Don't get me wrong, it would be even better if they designed maps so that uncap rape is either impossible or at least very difficult to sustain so that rules are unnecessary. But if they design maps again like BF2 then you need the tactical freedom to take the fight to your enemy wherever they are.

With that said, you may think it's easy to find servers that allow it but the problem is, even though over 50% of the playerbase accepts base rape, for whatever reason the people who actually pay for the servers tend to implement these rules. Maybe they want to cater to the other 25%, I don't know, but either way it makes base rape servers in short supply.

We tend to lean on the side of the fewer rules the better, as it's less work for admins and it leads to better game play. In our experience, anyone should be allowed to go in, steal/blow up assets, etc. But if they sit in a corner and spawncamp, we tend to frown on it. It's usually not an issue, as once a person is killed once or twice, they're usually able to kill the camper and the problem is solved. And if the person keeps spawning in their main and they have other flags, we encourage them to not be retarded and keep spawning in a place that gets them killed repeatedly.

It's worked pretty well so far....but we get a bunch of new members who immediately insist we ban spawncampers, at which point we remind them that insta-nuke isn't how we roll.

Plus, if BC2 is any indication, there will be more and varied spawn spots within a flag or uncap area. BF2 really lends itself to insane spawn camping because often enough, there is a point at both cappable flags AND uncap areas where a tank could sit on that spot and have line of sight to all or nearly all spawn points. Base raping, as with everything, should be designed to be more effective if done by more than one person, so they should not design it so that one person in a tank can do it. Kind of like how a single jet pilot should not be able to get 100 kills per round, nor should a single person be able to hold down an uncap.

But again I think if BC2 is any indication, it WILL take a coordinated effort of more than one person to sustain a base rape.

Yeah, we're pretty much the same on our servers. The worst in BC2 Rush is when people whine about base raping. It's Rush!

But BF2 had tons of base/spawn raping. When teams get stacked, it can useless to spawn as you know you're going to be killed in an instant, people leave and kill the server. We let people know that base raping without trying to steal vehicles is frowned upon and we'll kick after a warning.

BF3 will most likely have the same random spawning as BC2. In regards to un-enterable uncaps, kind of on the fence. Uncaps can vary greatly based on the map, Procon in BC2 had a plug-in that allowed you create safe zones but I believe using the plugin was not allowed on rank servers. We'll have to see how they handle it in BF3.

Yeah, we had some issues with killing the server pop on BF2 also, if a tank or a helo would roll in followed by carpet bombing it was unbearable, which is why we eventually settled on the "no excessive spawncamping" rule...we wanted it to be intentionally vague so as to rely on our experienced admins.

We have the BC2 procon plugin you mentioned...we had it running (it works fine on ranked servers) but I think it led to connection problems or some other issues...it was kinda wonky.

I'll be honest, 90% of the time if I am uncap raping it's because that base houses a vehicle that's raping me all over the map. Take, for example, the beach house uncap on Sharqi, from which the rapefest Mi28 spawns. Don't get me wrong, sometimes it's good to rape for the purpose of grinding the enemy's bones to dust, but I try to not to do that too much because I do recognize that people leave if they can't stop you from doing it after a couple of minutes.

I don't have any problem with compromising base rape rules where you are allowed to rape as infantry or jeeps only and are not allowed to rape with jets, choppers or tanks, and if you do steal one of those you must leave immediately. Compromise is always good, it just really sucks when the chopper pilots on your US team in sharqi suck and you as a ground troop need to help by taking the enemy chopper out where it spawns, but you can't because of uncompromising uncap rules.

Guys,

Two questions:

1.) What's "uncap rape"?

2.) Has the release date for BF3 been announced yet or is it still "Q3 - 2011"?

Dang... In my entire life I have preordered 2 games (almost 30 years old here), one was Oblivion and the other was BF:BC 2. The only thing holding me back from preordering this is the lack of availability on Steam. C'mon Steam, I'm ready to give you some money!!!

600+ hours of BF 2 in 2 different tournaments for 2+ years and 140+ hours (and counting) in BC 2. I'm thinking this will be yet another time sink... and I so can't wait! I just hope my 6970 is up to the task.

An uncap is a base that is owned by one team and can't be captured by the other team. Conquest maps usually start with one of these for each team. Uncap rape is having the enemy surround that base and shoot the enemy and/or their assets as soon as they spawn.

The release date is still Fall 2011. Which I believe means between September and November.

Rookie! Just kidding.

BF:BC2 and BF3 have been my only pre-orders because of the awesomeness of BF2. I think I have almost as much time as you in the attack choppers alone and a total playing time of about 1300 hours since the demo was released in June 2005.

I've never pre-ordered a game before, but I'm definitely going to pre-order BF3 once Steam gets it!

Currently I have a Core 2 Duo running at 3ghz, with 4gb DDR2 and a 9600GT. If the system requirements aren't much higher than BC2, is it reasonable to think that it'll run well at 1680x1050 if I upgrade my GPU to a 6950?

Well you'd want to upgrade to at least a quad. BC2 ran better with a Quad so you can be sure BF3 would need it even more so with a more advanced Frostbite engine.

Crap. I was afraid of that. Maybe over the summer I can save up for a Sandy Bridge upgrade, too.

Well if you can sacrifice other visual aspects I'm sure it'll run fine on lower settings but I'm the type of person who never runs on anything other than the highest settings.

The Game Developers Conference starts today. Karl Magnus Troedsson (L_Twin, DICE General Manager), Patrick Bach (Executive Producer of Battlefield franchise) , and Daniel Matros (Zh1nt0, Community Manager) from DICE are all in San Francisco now.

Word I am reading is that BF3 is to be shown tomorrow, but the news is embargoed until Wednesday.

Heh - I usually am too but I always experiment with lower settings. I have found a couple of games where it is much easier to spot someone if you turn various details down

War Tapes: The Sounds of Battlefield 3

War Tapes: The Sounds Of Battlefield 3
by Ben Hanson on February 28, 2011 at 07:00 AM

The award-winning team behind Battlefield: Bad Company 2's terrific sound design is back. Led by audio director Stefan Strandberg, DICE got up close and personal with the sounds of battle during a live military exercise. Their recordings and subsequent lessons learned could make Battlefield 3 the most realistic sounding war experience in gaming.

Watch the video below to hear how DICE plans to make a great-sounding series even better.

BC2's field of view : Am I the only one that feels like it's set to permanent 1.5X zoom even when not using any scopes? I mean, it's as if your soldier's very eyes were at 1.5X zoom.

BF3 Campaign info from a French Magazine?

Battlefield 3 in PC Games: 8 pages preview

After Operation Flashpoint 3 last month , PC Games is once again on its cover an SPF warrior in modern context. The difference is that this time, the game in question is highly anticipated.

The article focuses on the single player campaign of Battlefield 3 for the simple reason that DICE wanted nothing to show for the multiplayer event press. Result, the 8 pages are quite scarce in details, the reporter simply telling precisely the tasks which he was able to attend, while recalling what we already knew. Here we go:

Conduct of one of the first missions of the game:

The headset will tell you that he must immediately join the hideout not far to attend the briefing . It's beautiful, it moves well and total immersion. The reporter found the PC Games Frosbite Engine 2.0 more impressive than the ID Tech 5 and the CryEngine 3. He compares the received slap than Crysis in 2007, no less. Back to the mission briefing is finished now and we need to attack to kill all those nasty. Ouch, that bad start: just out of the briefing, a teammate to take the ball from an enemy sniper holed up in the next building.

It's scripted, but this is not a reason to let him drown in his blood. You grab his body and drag to cover with the help of a QTE (we know no more). Meanwhile, the bullets whistling past your ears and your squad members to kindly remove the few enemies who came to the debates.

Once the area is cleaned, it must quickly find a place conducive to the elimination of the sniper. The building located a few steps from here seems found. Once on the roof, shooting deletions made by the enemy force you to put on his belly to grow. The low wall that serves to cover crumbling seen eye contact with the ball. Once in position, there is more to eliminate the sniper with a rocket launcher.

Another sequence from the same mission:

The player is sent alone into a building to investigate a suspected electrical line, following the orders given to him by his superior via an earpiece. Arriving in the basement of the building, the player discovers a room where a bomb is already primed and ready to explode. The hero looks at the camera and begins to craft defuse the device. Too late, a terrorist has put his two cents in history and shakes you violently. QTE sequence ensues, and you stick him good frigged bare hands and finally defuse the bomb.

You go back to the surface and land on a pedestrian bridge to repel an enemy offensive, with the help of an entire squad. The atmosphere is electric and the deafening sound of helicopters flying over the city covers all the other sounds of the scene.

Once the fight goes on, the player climbs into the back of a jeep and seized the heavy Mitralias. A new wave of enemies appeared and, in the heat of the moment, the Jeep can be found on the side. You're wrong, the image is blurred and distorted sound attenuated. Seconds later, an earthquake sounds and the building located a few tens of meters you crumbles like a house of cards. A tsunami has you covered with debris. Black screen and end of the demo.

Some info in bulk:

* The Frosbite 2.0 was already in development when the first Bad Company (released in June 2008) was still in production.
* When an explosion took place close to the player, it is projected on the ground (it seems that it is not scripted). When the player is shot so insistent, our character blink (?) And the view is cloudy.
* The basis of body awareness is the Mirror's Edge, which was subsequently improved. 3P animations come largely licenses FIFA and NBA Street.
* Environments should be varied: plains, woods, night scenery (not to mention Paris, New York and of course the Middle East)
* DICE wants to release a game where the player has the feeling of playing as a soldier, while alternating phases of intense fighting with other much quieter moments. A bit like FEAR 1 (and quite the opposite of Call of Duty)

The Technology Behind Battlefield 3

The Technology Behind Battlefield 3
by Ben Hanson on March 01, 2011 at 07:00 AM

Battlefield 3 is not a simple rehash. DICE has spent years building the new technology to ensure that the third entry in the series stands apart from the rest. In these three interviews, we speak with the team to learn how the new technology will affect each player's experience on the battlefield. Check out the first video to learn all about the greatly enhanced destructive capabilities of the Frostbite 2 engine.

Want to know how Mirror's Edge has influenced Battlefield 3? Lead animator Tobias Dahl talks about the company's increasing emphasis on animation and how the team is incorporating a system called ANT from EA Sports.

The third video features Battlefield 3 art director Gustav Tilleby explaining the new lighting system in the game and DICE's approach to creating environments.
