Not a big fan of the browser based server browser. Reminds me of the old school quake days. I'd rather use a 3rd party program like qspy or all seeing eye. I want to be able to only refresh my current list of servers instead of pulling all the servers from the master again. BC2 and killing floor are examples of bad in-game server browsers. This battlelog thing just looks like the elite thing they have for modern warfare.

I was getting about 40-45fps on average using the "high" setting at 1080 with i5-2500k @4.2Ghz and 5850 stock clock. It's so early to get worked up about it but overall gameplay was smooth. I have no problem using BF3 as an excuse to get a new vid card

Can you post some screens? Most of the ones out there are from people running Ti4600's.

New Battlefield Blog Post: Battleblog #4 - Up Close and Personal

Thursday, 28 July 2011 16:00

Dog tags have always been a part of Battlefield, acting as a personal calling card for every soldier on the field, and these little emblems will be making a return this fall in Battlefield 3. After the launch of Battlefield 1942, the development team received physical dog tags from DICE as a token of appreciation. The team was so tickled by the gesture, they made sure dog tags have been a part of the in-game experience, becoming a part of the franchise since Battlefield 2142.

Your dog tag is your personal business card in Battlefield 3 – it’s what you dangle in front of an enemy you’ve taken down, and you can also collect the dog tags from your enemies as trophies, adding an extra bit of bragging rights to the festivities. “When we introduced dog tags in Battlefield 2142, we immediately knew we’d turned the knife duel into something new and very personal,” says Alan Kertz, Senior Multiplayer Designer at DICE. “Now players could have a record of their humiliation takedowns, and players were striving to protect their neck.”

With that in mind, DICE wanted to make sure dog tags in Battlefield 3 were even more personal, bringing an extra weight to them. You’ll be able to choose a design that goes with an in-game stat that gets tracked dynamically. “Dog tags in Battlefield 3 go beyond just having your name on them,” explains Kertz. “We have hundreds of dog tags that can be your personal calling card. Every time you kill an enemy, they see your tags. It’s your calling card – it’s your place to brag, and dynamic tags can show off how great you are with a knife, a jet, or even show off your personal play style.”

(Please visit the site to view this media)

The only way to get a dog tag from your adversary is by performing one of the new, brutal knife takedowns. That not all – you’ll have to take out your target from behind. That’s right – you’ll have to employ some stealth and sneak up on your enemy and put them out of their misery before they realize you were even there, making for some well-deserved bragging rights. Now that these dog tags are highly customized for your own play style, it helps make things that much more personal, so the only way to gain one is to get the jump on your opponent. Yes, these dog tags may demand a bit more than usual to collect them, but that just makes it a greater insult when you take one from your foe.

These knife kills look amazing and provide a great new way to prove your prowess on the Battlefield, and thanks to the new ANT animation system, these takedowns add a dynamic visual flair. “ANT technology allows us to make the knife takedown a truly immersive part of the physical Battlefield,” Kertz adds. “Takedowns encourage players to get in there for stealth kills, and makes bringing a knife to a gun fight the risky but rewarding experience it was always meant to be.”

Stay tuned for BF3 Battleblog #5 soon.

If you reload without emptying the mag it leaves one in the chamber so you'll have 30+1 (or whatever).

It seems like you unlock optics, attachments etc. per weapon, and per side (US/OPP). >_<

Well, I'm not going to post screenshots because of nda. But...I just went back in and paid a little more attention to the framerate. It seems I overestimated a bit. When looking at my surrounding cover, the framerate averages high 30's and low 40's, but when I'm looking into the battlefield (where all the action is), I'm getting closer to 35 average. I probably was focused on the action yesterday and only glanced at the framerate when I had safe cover. So, hope this helps. Again, it's very early and I expect a lot will change. The graphic options are very basic in the alpha and I expect that we'll see more optimization and graphic settings when the game goes gold.

I'm going to remap my keyboard tonight and maybe turn up the clock on the 5850.

Now, I'm not one to care too much about the mag pool vs ammo pool deal, but for them to pay attention to that little detail but then use ammo pool seems...assymetrical.

If they wanted to maintain the maximum appearance of authenticity they should have had mag system, and just had everyone carry a few extra mags so that reloading early wouldn't hurt anyone.

But oh well, contradiction works too.

Firing sounds really muffled for some reason. Not being able to change my keys is awful. Everything looks pretty washed out or over saturated. Rocket has tons of drop but it reloads really quick. Game gets real slow if everyone starts proning instead of rushing. Rocket & nades seem very weak against infantry.
I hate idiots that just sit there and try to wipe out everyone before they advance. Drives me CRAZY...they end up never moving, never advancing, and let you run ahead to your death because the defenders only have like 2 people advancing to focus on.

Rush is a speed of attack problem...the more people in front of the defenders at one time, the more likely the rushers take the point.

It would really be a cheap and non-inventive way to "lengthen" the multiplayer game. Not a fan.

Of course it does. The fans wanted prone and a slower game, apparently.

Nothing wrong with a slightly slower game. I for one don't want to have the entire game consist of spawning under fire because the map is tiny and because you can't take cover against anything.

Actually I think it's both. Your battle rank (level?) is global and that has some universal unlocks like perks. Then for class progression I'm not sure if it separates per side or not, I don't think it does. I'm not sure what unlocks here. Gadgets are core global stuff like medkits maybe?. But on top of that, weapon attachments seem separate. Unlocking the heavy barrel for the AK74 is separate from doing it for the M16. It's kind of confusing.

I'm wondering if you reload a touch quicker this way. I prefer the ammo pool anyway.

Ammo pool is lame. Mags put more emphasis on thinking about your shots and greater importance on the support using his ammo kit. I thought it was weird they sprung for this little detail too when going for a pool. I'll have to pay attention next time I play to see if you cock the bolt anyway when you reload mid mag or not. I HATED in BC2 how pump shottys would pump after EVERY reload no matter what.

There's no way crossfire works. I have a 4870X2 card, and I turned my resolution down to 1280x 800 and settings to low and I'm averaging 21 FPS. Sad.

Awesome. I know when I finally got into a server I crashed after 15 minutes. I was even on the beta drivers.

Oh nice, I'll try those drivers out when I get home. My machine at home was constantly freezing. If I wanted to test, I was basically staying late to use my work PC. Though, initial reports are not good from the forums about it fixing the crash issues.

In the alpha forums someone posted a fix that worked for me.
The 275.50 beta drivers somehow get loaded twice on your pc. If you go into add/remove programs, you'll see the two. The solution is to remove the second listing, which takes all of about one second.
After doing this, I have yet to have a freeze issue.

I have not yet loaded the new 280.19 beta drivers but will be checking in the add/remove programs to make sure they aren't in there twice as well.

Someone came up with another 3d spotting solution. Sadly this one wasn't my idea:
Basically- when you look at a 3D spot, the triangle disappears. That's it! When your aiming reticle comes within a certain number of vertical and horizontal degrees, it poofs. This means, if you can SEE the target, then the spot served its purpose and called your attention to it. And if you can't, it still notified you where the target is, but you can't shoot through trees/fences/etc even if they are moving - ie it's no longer a tracking wallhack.

It's such a simple solution, I can't believe no one thought of it. And people like to talk about Recon's job to spot? Well, under this system, it would be useful for a Recon to KEEP spotting the target. If you're looking at where a guy is and your triangle has disappeared because of it, if he gets re-spotted, it will flash back up for a second and then disappear again so you can't keep using it as a wallhack.

And if you choose to do so you can look away and reacquire the spot(if it's still active, which, under this system, spots could last longer), although if you re-aim you'll lose the triangle again.

Pure genius.

It is just me or does anyone feel that the only thing thats keeping this from being called bad company is prone?

I swear playing in the alpha I feel as if I'm playing bad company 2.5 this doesn't feel like a battlefield direct sequel. Maybe its just me, I know a lot of others might disagree with me. Also the god damn scope is annoying, click to hold down.

Forgive me if anything I'm saying is in direct violation of the NDA.
