Well I finally got everything up to date (I actually haven't updated Windows since last August, just installed SP1), and I'm still getting the fps drops. I enabled the performance overlay in-game, and all the drops are caused by huge CPU/GPU spikes. I still can't attribute them to any one cause, maybe I will have to record it with fraps and take the time to watch it closely.

And I think I've realized where a lot of my frustration comes from with this game. I think I want it to be something more than just COD with vehicles, but that's what it is.

I don't understand how every time I pop my head out of cover I either get instakilled from a sniper, or I'm immediately shot at, but enemy players can just run up and knife me in the back in the middle of one of my team's capture points surrounded by my teammates. Then during the killcam, I can see them just standing in the open shooting, but not being shot at. It's getting really tiring always being on the losing team and all my effort completely going to waste. I stuck around in a few servers for longer than a few games this time to see if the tide would turn and my team would get the upper hand, but we never did. We just kept losing, game after game.

Yeah, making air vehicles more realistic or even remotely complex would never work. There are sims for that. When I'm lining up the A-10 in my DCS sim, the IP (initial point) is miles away, and that's where weapons go hot and targets are acquired. That kind of stuff has no place in an arcade game like BF.

I searched for people, but none of my real life friends are gamers, and the battlefield 3 forums have pc, xbox and ps3 all in the same forum, so it's just filled with console players. And I figure the only way for me to meet new people online to play with is to join a clan, and I have no interest in joining one.

Nah, my clan mates and I play with the same group of people all the time, typically on the same 3 or 4 servers. Our clan is small and its really only 4 or 5 of us that play, the rest bitch and cry and wish this was Battlefield 2: Reloaded. Anyway, we almost always take the top spots in a match, along with ace squad. We don't always win, but playing as a unit is fun

True, though I've been on the other side about 10,000 times It's nice to not be on a team full of morons once in a while.

this may be console related but the new tank destroyers handle like fing crap, good god, its like driving a boat on land
The new Tank mode should be renamed tank zerg, because thats all that happens, also everyone is running IR smoke as its like the first upgrade you get for the tank destroyers, so you cant lock on to anything with a Jav/Guided
the new maps are large, the desert map is fing huge on the PS3 (5 caps) that are pretty far apart, i imagin the PC will have 8
hard as hell to kill things with the gunship
jets still need to be nerfed into the ground
tank reload change is very obvious and will take getting used to

Honestly Im never really bothered by jets, as long as I stay out of the air. It is an extremely rare occurrence for me to be killed by a jet while on terra firma. However a good pilot and gunner in an attack chooper can be a nightmare for us ground pounders.

its prob more of an issue on the console TBH as you have less people to distract/take stuff out but a good jet can take everything out of the sky and then just do bombing runs with rocketpods with close to zero chance of getting killed

They did some DB upgrades last night that affected all of the EA online services. Unfortunately you may have been part of the small percentile (overall EA online users) that got disconnected.

Back on the AK update. I wonder if anyone has driven the Sryker can chime in on how they feel in real life. From my impression is that they will be a bit spongy as they are a small platform that has a really big gun on top. They need to make the suspension able to soak up the massive recoil. Still looking forward to next Tuesday.

BF2 was absolutely insanely stupid once people starting owning from the skies. Literally ALL of the top 10,000 players or so were jet pilots, and could go like 130-0 round after round against the completely useless AA. That's why Karkand was so popular, you could have a reasonable ground battle without being relentlessly destroyed by jet cowards.

At least in BF3 you can have a reasonable ground game even with some pretty good pilots up there. It's best when there's a good balance of air power fighting it out above, and incredibly annoying when your side has no air power at all. Nothing like running through the woods in Caspian under the trees only to be instakilled by some douchebag in a jet. Jets should be focused on fighting other jets, helis, and land vehicles, not doing 20mph and strafing infantry that wouldn't even be as large as ants to them.

Other than that, it would be fantastic to have a limited lives and vehicle spawn setup. It would really boost teamplay. Even more awesome would be to combine that mode (3 spawns per player, 2 land vehicle spawns, 1 air vehicle spawns total) with a ratio system for classes, so you don't end up with 14 players out of 16 being engineers or something retarded like that.

Exactly why I find myself gravitating towards Karkand again. Air is either OP or the Stinger needs a seriouse buff. Tired of getting constanly strafed by nose down jets flying slower that the freaking attack chopper.

Who's scared of tanks? Just keep cover between you and them. Can't do that with a jet.

So I'm still trying to figure out what is causing my fps drops/cpu spikes. I just played a few rounds with a few programs open to monitor hardware usage. I don't think it's caused by overheating because my GTX460 never goes above 70C, and my Q6600 never goes above 54C.

I sit at a steady 40-50 fps 90% of the time, except for those random spikes.

My best guess at this point is that it's caused by hard drive activity. I had resource monitor up and when the spikes were at their worst, I had a lot of activity on my C drive (firefox, punkbuster, etc). Punkbuster seems to be the worst offender.

I don't know what it is about this Samsung drive, but it tests fine and seems to otherwise be running ok, but everything just feels slower with it than with any of the WDs that I've had before. My next drive will be WD, no doubt.

It depends on the laptop you get. The "gaming" laptops in most cases can accommodate the SSD's, my friend did that with his ASUS G series one. It had a spare bay he installed the SSD to.

I'm done with this game. I'm just not getting any enjoyment out of losing again and again and again, constantly getting baseraped, etc. And I don't want to join a clan where I would be the team doing the dominating, shooting fish in a barrel, that's not fun either. I was finally on a team today that was working well together and winning. Got autobalanced after glitching through a rock and dying.

I've just had it, there's plenty of games out there that are just more fun, or offer any fun at all. Only half the people playing this game at any given time are actually enjoying it.

It's not that I only enjoy the game when I'm winning, but in this game, there's no such thing as a close game, or evenly matched teams, and if you're playing by yourself you are doomed to lose, get dominated, and get stuck with incompetent team mates. Maybe there are plenty of good players on my team, but with a lack of voice chat, there's no way to properly work together unless you've already set up some kind of third party voip outside of the game.

What the game needs is a team shuffle at the end of the round. If you want to play with your friends, then play in a server without shuffle, but it would greatly increase the enjoyment for those playing by themselves to have teams randomized before every match. There is just no incentive to leave your team if it is winning, because it will continue to win round after round because the people on the winning team don't leave at the end, while the losing team ragequits and gets filled with more randoms. I realize this is the same as any other game with dedicated servers, but I've never seen it get so bad as this. I suppose it's the stat tracking and stat whoring.

I could write a novel on the problems with this game, but it's just not worth my time anymore.

Meh, I play with friends, and we dominate as squads. Sometimes other squads on our team do, too, and that's when we win. Other times we lose. If you want to play a team based game and excel, you should get with some people on your friends list and play together, simple as that. It was more of a general statement, I don't know if you're good or not Well, here's one AT platoon, and another AT platoon. Plenty of guys have listed their names here, in the last few pages even.
