Armored shield is an absolutely horrible map in terms of balance; US has a much easier run on the GS capture point, and RU can easily be pinned at spawn. It's a fun rush map though.

Love Alborz as a pilot, detest it on conquest playing as anything else.

On Armored Shield conquest I can take the mobile AA and keep the skies clear and all the while harass ground forces even if the enemy has the GS.

I had a match last night on Alborz playing Tank Superiority, and it was an abysmal experience. Why?
Either SOFLAMs or something else, or a combination, were painting the spawn with lasers. We were getting vehicles destroyed before we could even leave the hill thanks to locks and missiles/rockets. Only being a little skillful and relying on timely use of IR Smoke would you get away on some occasions. Killed a sniper or two throwing HE rounds from the Tank Destroyer, from spawn, into the mountains to the right of our one spawn point (US?).

For Tank Superiority, I probably prefer, in this order:
Armored Shield
Death Valley
Bandar Desert
Alborz Mountains

Bandar can be fun, but it seems a little one-sided.
Death Valley offers a few routes and some good shootouts.

Alborz has its moments, and with good teams, can be a pretty fun match. But, it's not often the case.
Bandar, with good teams, can really flow back and forth quite well - but it's very easy to get raped by the team that gets the benefit of spawning from the higher elevation.

Armored Shield feels quite balanced imho, and offers a few strategies. It's easy to get raped by a good team from either side, if your team blows, but with good defensive strategies, it's possible to sweep into the capture point and take control. The one side does have more hills to hide behind and place AT - be they missiles or snipers with soflam, but it's not game-changing as long as the other side has their wits about them.

I'm thinking of buying BF3 cos they are on sale at 7.50$ at Amazon.
My rig is a Phenom II 955BE at 3.6 with an AMD 6870. The monitor is a run of the mill 1080p.
Is there anything I should know about BF3 before buying it ?
Are official servers widely available now ?

Servers are widely available. The game kicks ass. That you should know.

An old CoD4 clan mate and friend of mine finally broke down and bought BF3 at the $7.50 price on Amazon. Looks like Ill be playing on the original maps more now to try and show him the ropes before he gets discouraged, as he is a total noob to battlefield.

do a lot of people still play this game? I haven't been on in awhile but now every time I go into the server browser there are maybe 3 full servers, a handful of semi-full servers, and then a ton of empty ones.

You might want to adjust your server browser settings, I have no trouble finding billions of servers to play on.

Check multiple game types up top under 'mode', then in 'free slots', check the middle three, and leave 'full' and 'empty' unchecked. I really only play three maps any more, and even with just that there are dozens of servers for me to choose from.

I think the game browser is just a little flaky.

Check your server browser settings. And scroll down until it stops loading more servers.

Are there as many players online as when BF3 was fairly new? Probably not. But there have been a few expansions and more game modes and maps, and this splits up player interest as well. So put in some filters in the browser and you should see a few more heavily-populated servers.

Hahaha yeah, I was puzzled as to 'agresive' as a reason for being kicked. At least I'm not banned from there, I've been perm-banned from maybe 30-40 servers now. Badmins rampant in BF3.

To clarify, I obviously don't hack (my stats are meh for the most part anyway), I never spawnkill, I never TK (on servers that have team damage on), but damned if a lot of admins just want to ban anyone who gives them a tough game.

I had a blast this past weekend playing. All weekend long I had assholes on my own team driving jeeps into me and bailing out. Totally epic time!

Does anyone actually like tank superiority? Get a tank, drive to cluster F in middle of map, fire shells, die. Rinse and repeat x 30.

What a stupid game mode.
