Lots of registration problems

Bought a key off of amazon, and during registration they remind me I have a GW account I can link to. Can't remember the password (my fault, haven't used it in years) but there's no password reset link. Luckily through some poking around I was able to find a reset link on NCSoft's site. Well after resetting it they tell me that the account was blocked. I'm not sure if it was because of all my failed login attempts or what, but I got a password reset email so I assume I got through okay. I most likely got hacked at some point and never knew it. My issue is I have no option NOT to link my GW1 account. I don't care about any perks there may be to having them linked, I just want to use the email address I use for all of my game registrations. I can register another junk email address just to start, but I'm hoping I don't have to. I submitted a support ticket so hopefully I can get my email back, but who knows.

Bah, annoying

Same thing happened to me, not that I was locked out of my original GW1 account, I just didn't want the two tied together and it wasn't giving me a choice. I ended up just making a new e-mail address for GW2.

Using an email linked to a game that has probably been hacked is a good recipe to have your GW2 game also hacked.

I use the email address all the time so I would know immediately if something was wrong there. It's not like I'm going to use the same password, when you're creating a GW2 account it even warns you if you've used a password you've used before and won't let you do it.

I did the same thing.

So... other than Stormbluff is there another server anybody else is on? It's currently full which is the one my friends are on too.

Also, from what I read there's not really the "roles" that are typical in the online RPG world (tank, healer, etc) so it might not matter... but is there something more geared towards PvE, possibly solo at first?

I play on Kaineng cause it was the least populated when I signed up. Server transfers are currently free so it probably doesn't really matter which one you pick as you can always move later.

Ranger pets are actually pretty good tanks for solo play, necros have a panic button that can basically double their life if they need to get away, guardians have some of the best self heals and defense. Pretty much any class is viable in PvE though, you can get on the wiki and go through all their skills, and use one of the build tools to get a feel for what character would interest you the most.

For PvP some classes are definitely stronger than others. I play an engineer and they're pretty much terrible for PvP, but it's flooded with mesmers and thieves. Mesmers are definitely the strongest PvP class, if all I cared about was winning I'd roll one.

I don't know what I did to deserve this but my human ele had like three krait/risen/underwater story quests in a row between Claw Island and Orr. Real fun.

Now that I think of it there was even another underwater one early on when I joined the vigil. At least ele is fun underwater, but still.

Also I don't think any game has ever had worse targeting than this one. It's like everytime I rotate my camera I lose my selected target and half the time I end up with some ally targeted.

The guild was going to be on Kaineng but it was inactive at launch time. Stormbluff has been nice, though.

yes, that really pisses me off. target nearest is also rather broken. It goes by vectors, I guess, which is understandable, but you end up targeting something a level below you rather than what you are looking at. annoying.

You also lose your target on knockback or confusion or some other skills. Not sure if that's part of the skill--I can get that, I guess--but damn is it annoying.

Well, I jumped in last night just so I could get some time in. Picked Magumma as that's the only server I saw in the OP that wasn't full. I also went with a Nord warrior as it seems like a pretty easy to understand class for a noob. Will probably get through a bit with it to get a handle on everything then maybe start something else.

ya--Warrior is the easiest class to play for sure. Norn area can be kind of boring, though--but it's fun to start anywhere, really. If you get bored really early with spamming hundred blades on your great sword, I suggest trying out a different class/race before putting all the blame on the game.

You can always check for open servers as they open and close daily it seems, if you ever want to join us on Stormbluff.

I can still send a guild invite if you want, as it allows multiple server guilds and multiple guilds per account.

Lornars pass might be the worst zone in the history of MMOs. I liked the first two zones on the Norn side. But that one just grated on me. And I cant believe there is another 10 levels of it. I may move my warrior to another races zone for the 35-45 grind.

Lornar's is a common zone, really. I think all races/classes/order's quests take you there at some point. (especially if you choose the Priory). It is very long with some hyper-annoying areas (that infernal skritt cave in the north), so I'd suggest to either use it as a leveling zone early on or just skip ahead when the story quest takes you out of there.

I have 2 humans--whipsers and priory, and 1 norn--vigil, and all have taken me to Lornar's for a quest or two. I think my sylvari (whispers) will put me there soon, as well.

I think the human zones are generally the best for low-mid levelling. Herbs there are plentiful and the right ones are really valuable (relatively) and they always seem to have a decent amount of people in them. Plus I just prefer green zones to snowy zones. And the less time I spend in Dredge and Skritt caves, the better.

there are 2 seedling nodes in Caledon forest (sylvari starter zone) that rather consistently drop vanilla beans (going for about 1.8s each--may have dropped, though, since I know ANet tweaked the drops for them in 2 higher level zones recently)

I freakin hate Dredge ugh.

That one vista in the huge cave full of 30 second respawning dredge with all the catwalks... you know, where all the mobs have knockback/launch? Hell.

Doing some latenight spvp, but otherwise just logging in to rape orichalcum veins. Playing some Torchlight 2 if you guys play that, and some old school Age of Wonders 2 atm.

I remember that vista, I was in a large group roaming around in that place trying to figure out how to get up there, took us a little while. Would have really pissed me off a lot more if it wasn't for all the people so the quick spawns died quickly.

those are skritt, not dredge. that was the "evil scritt cave" that I was talking about earlier.

Well, i started off as a Sylvari Elrmentalist and had the worst time figuring out the class. Plus the Grove is so confusing (not as confusing as Rata Sum though). so i read up a little and restarted as a human warrior. Nice. I think ill probably use him to ubderstand the basics and then move on to levelling my elementalist.
Also, i second the targetting frustrations. As a warrior mistargetting causes a lot of unwanted frustrations.

Yeah, the targeting is an issue. Actually I'm not a fan of the entire control system as a warrior. Given that I can do damage to any enemy that makes contact with my weapon it seems odd to force me to select a target before attacking. It makes sense to use a skill where I'm throwing something but for normal attacks I should be able to just click wherever I want and I swing my sword.

Also, I feel like the skill system is just as dumbed down as it is in Diablo 3 and I don't like that. I'm still below level 10 so haven't done anything with traits, but I feel like nothing really is happening as I level up. I have an extra utility and heal skill, but everything else just unlocked on its own. It seems to be very gear focused... however there doesn't seem be much of it to be had. The only gear I've gotten has been from the story line. Maybe it's just too early but it's just not what I expected.

All classes can swing weapons and use skills without targeting an enemy, you're free to miss as much as you want. There are certain skills which require a target but those are few and far between and are usually reserved for stationary weapons. I'll also add that I have zero issue with the targeting system.

As for the trait skills, they make game-changing differences as you get to the later levels. Or at least that's the case for the Thief profession. I haven't really noticed this as much on my Guardian which seems to only have a handful of interesting trait skills.

Guardian skills depend on the type of guardian you want to be, or what you are trying to do. For dungeon runs, you are pretty much forced into "Stand your ground", "Save yourselves", and "Retreat". Your heal is typically the "signet of restoration" (for passive condition removal ever 10 seconds), with your elite being the only thing that you have a choice in terms of changing things up. This also means that you will be running with the trait to do -20% shout regen time, and either greatsword or hammer traits as well (typically greatsword seems to be the preferred weapon). The reason you are forced to those skills as the guardian is pretty obvious once you play a dungeon. You absolutely need "Stand your ground" avoid knockdown/back attacks which are extremely common in dungeons. You need "Save yourselves" as an added skill to break out of stuns/knowdown, as well as give you a speed buff and to be a team player to be able to remove conditions from other players in your group and place them on yourself (who most likely has much MUCH better healing due to an extremely good passive heal as well as at a minimum 2 skills/abilities to perform healing). Finally "Retreat" is a requirement to gain a speed buff which is absolutely required in dungeons so you don't have to fight EVERY single group of mobs in the dungeon and simply bypass a lot of the extremely hard/annoying fights.

I must say that I do really love my guardian, probably more than I like my warrior, but my warrior by far is the better WvWvW player in terms of kills/deaths ratio because he gets so many kills.
