I have liked Ace's review the best so far and I must say, this chip while not a slam dunk is extremely impressive.

The ability of AMD to gain such numbers in traditionally Intel dominated tests is very good for AMD, the 3200+ is cheaper than the 3.2C and the EE only manages to beat the FX in certain tests.

However the real test lies in time, the 3.2 EE has better performance than the Prescott 3.2 which has been implied by Intel, AMD is supposed to be able to ramp up clock speeds. If they can get the FX to 2.6 or above by Prescott, maybe even 2.4 then the FX I am sure would beat the Prescott 3.4.

The EE is impressive by itself because Intel was able to pull it off without anyone finding out. Besides that it was a well placed despiration move.

The architecture is very efficiant and it was overall a very good launch for AMD.

I've only managed to peek at Anand's and Ace's reviews so far, but the A64 seems to be a pretty fine chip, and usually quite an improvement over AthlonXP 3200+ I might have to grab one, although I'll probably take Evan's advice and hold off about a week to see what mobos pop to the surface first

Pentium4 EE... you gotta wonder what they'd be charging for that if it had 603 pins and a Xeon logo, considering that the 400MHz-based 2.8GHz Xeon MP is over $4000. If that's what Intel has to do to counter Athlon 64 just on 32-bit performance, then they'd better get Prescott going so it can "work smarter, not harder" with its new instructions and architecture. Throwing $4000 CPUs out the window for $700 is an expensive way to compete.

Intel has already admitted that the P4EE is faster than an equivalently clocked Prescott. Prescotts main advantage over the P4 is its ability to scale higher.

I'm just curious if there's a link on this that i'm missing somewhere? I find that hard to believe...

I think the Inquirer quoted Intel officials as saying the Pentium 4 Extreme Edition would be the fastest gaming CPU released this year. The EE is nothing more than marketing hype - I would be surprised if it was faster than Prescott.

I think it is amazing at all the different benchmarks from all the different sources everyone looks to the site that the results are more inline with there preference. These reviews are definatley biased from site to site. Some have the Intel in the lead some the AMD. Whats funny is that a 2.4C running an FSB of 275 1:1 will be near the top of all of those results. So for a mear ~$160 you are set for awhile.

Lets enjoy this competion while we can.

WEll my thoughts..... I have read most of them. The two best are Ace's and X-bit labs. For one the reviews are night and day between the different sites. First off the A64 3200+ is the best performance/price processor. It generally outperforms the P4 3.2 and at times runs with the FX51. The FX51 and the P4EE are very equal with the FX have a slight advantage overall. I think Aces which showed no less than 11 different games with the FX winning 7 out 11 over the EE. But now let the truth be told. Both are so expensive very very few will ever be bought. The EE is interesting in several ways. One its a total paper launch. Second according to X-bit it performs even better in games than the up coming Prescotts, wtf? The FX ain't much better. Why would AMD release a processor in which you gotta buy buffered ram? And while I'm on AMD, these people need to get back to developing their own chipsets. The best chipset ever made for their chips was the AMD 751. They need to spend more time working on optimizing their platforms. Its the optimization that Intel is using to kill them with in certain benchmarks. What it comes down to is this. Whoever can master their manufacturing will win this war and be in the driver seat for at least a year and half. I think AMD has taken a huge step forward today. While Intel stole some of the thunder, there is no denying that these new chips have a chance to be down right off the hook. But if someone can loan me $850 and I can find one, those P4 EEs like pretty slick as well.

Did anyone see the screen savers on Tech TV yesterday with the AMD people in the audience? Someone called and ask if he should get the Athon 64 and they came right out and said no even with the AMD reps there.

Yeah...I'd like to see a link. I'm guessing that maybe in certain cases the large L3 cache might give it a slight advantage, but overall, the Prescott should do better than an equivalently clocked P4.

I?ll I can say is I?m glad I got back into woodworking, Nitro RC racing, fishing and hunting! I will always care about technology because I work with it every day but with the distance I have found I?m buying way more for my money today than I did back in the day I was on the top of the game

And a paper launch also for the EE ? I will make my final judgement on the Athlon 64 series in 6 months or so, but today I am impressed, just not enough to buy one yet (XP3000-3500 OC'ed 2700 is fast enough for me for now). I think a lot may change in 6 months with a 64bit OS and maybe a few apps coming out. Also still being able to run 32 bit and 64bit at the same time ! Time will tell........

heh yeah but right now for today's usage the P4 EE is either beating the Athlon 64 or just underneath it. If the current P4 can do that just wait until Prescott comes out...AMD will be clobbered

I already hate the FX and the EE versions simply for the tremendous confusion that it created around this launch. OEM computer manufacturers wanted a dual channel "super-dee-duper" gaming chip to lie about...err...market to their customers so both AMD and Intel complied with such a ridiculous offer (perhaps the OEM's should investigate the costs of custom engineering a microprocessor for their needs) by rebadging their most applicable server chips as desktop chips. Wave a little magic wand and voila...the Opteron becomes the Athlon FX and the XeonMP becomes the P4-EE (yes I'm aware it wasn't QUITE as simple as waving a magic wand...but considering all that's involved in chip design, it might as well have been).

The real competiton is between the Athlon 64 3200+ and the Pentium 4 3.2Ghz (yes, yes, Prescott will end up being its main rival, but Prescott has not been launched....that's like saying the ATI 9700 Pro competed with the GeForce FX 5800 Ultra at its launch...not very possible when NV30 isn't available). In the REAL comparisons, the Athlon 64 did quite well, is priced reasonably (for a brand new chip release) and spanks the P4 3.2 in most benches and cuts significantly into the lead in traditional Intel strongholds. Performance of this chip will not be an issue, yield and thus availabilty will.

You make it seem as though AMD is going to stand still. AMD will have a 3400+ Athlon 64 (2.2GHz) by year's end and you can expect a 3600 and 3800 by 1H '04

but you miss my point...there is no 64bit OS for us to get, and no 64bit apps. Oh and did I mention no OS for those apps to use? And no linux doesn't count.

Plus where the P4 EE is about equal to the Athlon 64 the Prescott will definately beat the P4 EE and that means it will probably beat AMD's fastest.

Maybe but what about chipsets? Are we in for another round of incompatability with certain cards and software that will lock up just like a couple years ago with.

It remains to be seen how well the Athlon 64 will scale, NFS4...if anything, its slightly checkered past doesn't give one too much confidence. Intel, on the other hand, generally delivers on their yield promises, and, if anything, can go beyond if necessary. I doubt Intel will stand by and let the A64 steal the crown...

Oh, like the i875/i865's inability to work with certain Radeon 9500/9700 cards or its pickiness with certain memory modules?? Or how about Granite Bay AGP issues? Pot...Kettle...Black

Yep, and you all sitting here praising a paper launched P4 EE that won't be released for another couple of months. Intel sure knows how to time their "launches"

Doesn't really matter. Intel took AMD's best punch today which ended up as more of a jab than an uppercut, and remains standing. The cat is out of the bag and AMD didn't not decisively take the speed crown back, and it's debatable whether they got it back at all. We know there will be higher speed grades and we also can pretty much predict speed increases from here, so we aren't expecting any miracles out of the 3400+ and above. The Prescott is still an unknown. We know it will be faster that the same clock speed standard P4, the question now is how much. If it is a little, they remain neck and neck with AMD. If it is by a decent amount than AMD is right back to where they were with the Athlon vs P4, playing catchup.

All I saw today was Intel's paper launched P4 EE blowing in the wind It'll take it a couple of months for it to formulate into something "concrete"

Wow, that was incredibly irrelevant. I don't see anyone lining up to buy either $750 CPU.

I never said anything about the P4EE...and, in the past year, Intel has been executing very well with their launches.

No, THAT statement is irrelevant. One of those CPUs you can actually buy IF you wanted to. The other is just a stopgate counter to the Athlon FX to steal AMD's thunder for today.

B/C everyone is saying that Intel stood up to AMD's best punch today. The only thing that really weathered those punches today was an unreleased CPU...the P4 EE. You sorta have to use a little thing called reading comprehension
