So what's the story on how all of this got started? I tried to find the original thread, but it looks like it's MIA. Closest I found was what appears to be the second-year-running thread in 2002:

http://www.portvapes.co.uk/?id=Latest-exam-1Z0-876-Dumps&exid=thread...a-half-away-atot-secret-santa-updated.923827/

My forum join date was February 14th, 2004, although I really didn't venture into OT for a couple of years...my first Secret Santa was in 2006. So I got a full 10-year run in. Wow! Hats off again to amdskip & MartyMcfly3 for putting up with all of us over the years

I started my "career" in hosting in 2005, so 12 years hosting with Jeff (amdskip). I know it went a few years prior to that.

For all the thanks given in this thread, the secret santa wouldn't have been successful all these years without you all participating, so thank YOU! This secret santa was always fun to run/be a part of, and some of my best xmas gifts were the ones received from online strangers.

Bummed it has to be discontinued, but appreciative of the many years it ran.

This is unfortunate news, too bad there weren't a few more signups, always enjoyed giving and receiving gifts for and from online strangers/friends

The whole internet isn't the same anymore... not just ATOT. I think too many trolls / idiots have kinda ruined it. Also technology has really gotten a bit blah. Not like back in the day when a new video card or new sound card, etc... were game changers. I have lived in the era of the Atari 2600 to the XBOX One. How much further can they really go? When NES first came out it was amazing... Then SEGA Genesis... and so forth. Has technology jumped the shark?

I think people are more worried about whether they live or die.
And healthcare has always been more expensive than entertainment.

Cloud automation is the big thing now.

Honestly, I think once Trump gets out of office, everyone will settle the hell back down. The guy made all those angry grandpas that yell at the TV feel legitimate and started enacting arm-chair quarterback plans that put everyone on edge. It will get better.

That, and this year, I've seen VDI with vGPU come out as a legit DaaS solution. Like, actual gaming, streaming Youtube fullscreen, etc. Now that they're over that obstacles, Fiber with 5G backup will let businesses really take advantage of thin clients for desktops & workstations. Then it's just a matter of marketing it & making it accessible to small biz, for example. Amazon would be smart to be one of the first big ones to offer it, especially if they were to bundle it with a VOIP solution. Like, get a dual-screen-capable thin client (with a cloud client) with a VOIP phone (with unlimited domestic calling) for $30/user/month or something like that. Between their VPS & Workspace service offerings, they're almost there, but they need to take the McDonalds route & make it even easier for small biz clients to slide into. Bundle that with Office 365 & you're gold as far as compatibility & usability go!

Yep. Back in the 90's by the time you got home with a computer it was already obsolete. These days you can get a processor like a i5 2500k and it will be good enough for half a decade before you have reason to upgrade.

My company is actually bringing VDI to small/medium business this year. You just described our whole business model

That's awesome! I would really like to see something like this as a bundle offering from a cloud solutions provider:

1 Fiber + 5G service package
2. VPS + GPU-accelerated VDI + quality thin clients
3. VOIP with Facility Paging (ex. Shoretel hybrid) with a desk phone, mobile app, chat, etc.
4. Office 365 (Office + Skype)
5. Hosted networking (ex. Sonicwall VM) with local mesh-style WAP's (ex. Ubiquiti)

I think like an Amazon "build a business" package would be amazing...if you have 10 employees, they'd ship you out 10 thin clients, 10 VOIP phones, and all of the rest of the bits & pieces for a local installer to put in. I've worked with one or two companies that do that now (with a high degree of integration), but they are not quite as turnkey as I want (or really, as big of a company as I would want backing a service offering like that). But it's allllllllllmost there! And NVIDIA's cloud GPU stuff, along with with various third-party compression & streaming utilities, have gotten really, really amazingly good for giving a user a real full-desktop, no-compromise experience this year. I still don't like being dependent on the Internet connection (although it wouldn't be as bad with a 5G failover...4G, not so much), so a hybrid approach like Shoretel takes with one of their "edge" phone systems would really be ideal for the desktop systems, but still, I think that would be a huge gamechanger, especially for small businesses where you could literally just pay a monthly fee, have a dude come out for a one-day setup, and be up & running the next day with the latest of everything & have it managed for you. That would be really killer!

I kinda agree here too. I've seen Facebook put an end to high school reunions (well, mine did) because we see just about everyone we care to see every day. There is not big reveal except from those who've tried to remain off the main grid. Sure there may be some small localized gatherings but nothing like before.

The internet has changed, and sadly there are too many toxic personalities/troll accounts around here these days. Sad.
