This is an extension of the nef fest that was the previous chess thread. What do you think of a chess game open to the public and run through the message boards?

***OFFICIAL RULES***

1. Contestants must have a redhotpawn account
2.Pieces are moved by stating the location of a current piece and the place that you wish to move it to. This text must link to a screenshot of your move on redhotpawn.
3.Move can only be undertaken AFTER the opposing player has posted his move
4.Strategy discussion is not allowed in the thread, but general comments are.
5. 24 hour turn "timeout" limit,
6. No using chess aids or software to assist you in move decisions
7. Prizes are awarded at the whim of the ATOT moderators.
8. Tournament assignments will be posted on Tuesday night, CDT

Prospective Players:
rise
Xonoahbin
DangerAardvark
eLiu
sao123
ChAoTiCpInOy
n yusef
tagej
CelSnip
zebano

Assignments:
First name is white, second is black

zebano vs rise
Xonoahbin vs n yusef
DangerAardvark vs eLiu
tagej vs ChAoTiCpInOy
Celsnip vs sao123

Updated summary to reflect that AnandTech is behind this idea -- we'll help make it work!

yeah, number 2 is unnecessary. if a player states where he is moving from and to, there is no need for pics. the moves will be made here, anyone can figure out who is cheating.

i'd think anyone interested should post and state their assumed skill level, then we could do some matchups

There has to be some way to have a visual representation of the board. It's too easy for everyone to get lost if numbers are thrown out without any pictures to look at.

well, if each player has a board, and the moves are listed here, that would be the visualation. you say c2 to c4, i can follow that.

But if you post a picture, the players can play from anywhere w/o access to their respective boards.

For the chess board, we can always just use a board like this or this and then resize the pieces from wikipedia. It wouldn't be a problem for me to provide a zip file of all the official pictures to each of the players, and it wouldn't take too long for them to photoshop each move.

Edit:
The purpose of the picture is not just to allow the players to play, but to allow casual poster to follow the game without too much trouble.

or we can just call each other out for yahoo games. But it's spring break, so I'm going back to my 60 hour work week. No night school != chess playing. No night school = more overtime

when i got back in it was a great way to get a game whenever you wanted. I always have to sit around for someone willing to play without a 2 second move timer.

I made a chess board in no time. With photoshop and layers, it's pretty easy to move individual pieces around. The only real time consuming part is setting everything up in the beginning.

Edit:
Nevermind.

Yes I know the board is setup wrong. That's what happens when I'm rushed and studying for finals.

I think a forum-wide chess game will be... a total crap shoot, lol.

I tried posting a wall chess board in my dormatory--you walk by, you can make a move (so long as you record it on a neighboring notebook). It was impossible to make anything too interesting happen, b/c inexperienced folks would inevitably play something goofy. (Though I guess that made for some nerdy funnies.)

edit: unless I'm misunderstanding you and you want 1v1 games. In which case I'd be in so long as I don't have to take pictures (no camera) OR the photo editing is easy (I have MS Paint & am too lazy to learn/get anything else).

Copying and moving the preformatted images I made into the chessboard is about the easiest thing you can do in photoshop.

I'd love to see chess threads ...

my thoughts ::

don't need the players to post pics, but it would be good for a mod or "helper" to come in and post a pic of the current status at different intervals ... we don't need photoshop either, ascii art would work right?

also, we could make this official and talk about awards like custom titles or avatars for the winners / current champ.

I think this is a great idea guys!! keep the input coming (and don't go to yahoo or redhotpawn) let me know how AT can help to make this happen and to make it fun!

As long as they post the rules ahead of time so everyone knows what they have to adhere to, everyone will be happy.
