Best laptop deal? I'm going to guess that it would be the Circuit City deal, especially if you can do that "sign up for AOL for 12 months at $15/month, get the laptop for $200 in store out-the-door no-rebates (and lower sales tax on just $200 and not $450 ???) BS"
The Circuit City laptop is basically the same as the one at Best Buy except it has a nicer screen, a larger HD (60 GB to 40 GB), and 512 MB of DDR2 RAM instead of 256 MB (of DDR2). If you could end up getting it for less than the one at Best Buy (via the AOL thingy and a sales tax savings) there's no question it would be better. At face value, for $450 versus $380 it wouldn't be worth it for an extra 256 MB of RAM (visit NewEgg for that) and maybe not for the HD unless you'd use the extra 20 GB, but the nicer screen pushes it over the edge.
Of course, that's all based on what I've read at various forums.
As for the Walmart laptop, we're not sure what the price is yet. Some have reported $400 and some reports have said that the $400 was a mistake and it will be closer to $500. Even at $400 I'd go with the Circuit City deal over the Sempron. The Sempron is a nice processor and the Walmart HP is supposed to have better battery life, but for $380 (CC) versus $400 (WM) I'd take the 512 MB of DDR2 (faster RAM) over the 256 MB of slower RAM in the Walmart laptop plus the larger hard drive. I'm not sure which one has the better screen but the CC laptop has a nicer screen than the one at BB, so presumably the CC laptop would at least be on par wtih the WM laptop if it doesn't beat it.
Gonna have to get there at 1 or 2 am, maybe even earlier to get it from CC though. They probably only have 8 at each store and they'll be gone instantaneously. Not sure what you do if you're in line and need to use the potty. Wear an adult diaper maybe.
Man, if that $200 for the out-the-door price with AOL signup is real and if the taxes only apply to that $200 and not the entire $450 cost, that would be even hotter. For me the with-AOL cost would end up being $380 + $12 ($200 x 6%) = $392 versus $450 + $27 = $477.
Now to figure out how to do the AOL signup without actually using or instaling the AOL. Someone on another forum suggested installing it on your comp but on a "virtual machine".
