What?s up with those ugly reflectors on the front of American BMW?s?

EDIT: HERE is a link for reference (front arches). I've seen them on quite a few American BMW's now, weird.

Federal safety regs. Amber side reflectors ahead of the front wheels, red side reflectors behind the rear wheels. That way you can tell the direction the car is travelling even from the side (even from a stop, i.e. at a cross street). Most manufacturers integrate them into the turn signals and/or headlight assembly. Kind of like how the required rear red reflectors are integrated into the wrap-around taillights in that pic.
