We don't know that. At stock volts the power consumption is decent enough. If they can get low enough voltages in the 2GHz range, it might still be competitive.

True, we will have to wait and see how it scales to lower clocks. I just have no faith left after these revies.

Well it's midnight and Anand still doesn't have his article up, unfortunately. I'll just have to learn why 'dozer is a failure in the morning. I still can't imagine what the design team was thinking three years ago...

100W more than a stock 2500k/2600k isn't awful. But keep in mind, it takes an overclocked FX-8150 to keep up with those CPUs. You may want to check out the power consumption of an overclocked 8150. The difference grows to more than 250W, and easily surpasses an overclocked X6 1100T. However, an overclocked 2500k/2600k still maintain reasonable power consumption.

Quick question, there will be no bulldozer laptop parts correct?

Not officially, at least not any time soon.

I'm not even sure a company like Clevo will even bother to try and put Bulldozer in a laptop like they did with Gulftown.

For a complete departure in their design philosophy I'm happy for them. This is a pretty good first impression for a brand new arch. For a little improvement, or even a slight step backward in singlethreaded apps, there is a decent enough improvement in multithreaded apps. I think it could've been a lot worse for them and these results come as a relief. I like how resentful the gamers are that BD doesn't cater specifically to them, though. I look forward to the 4S Interlagos benches.

Actually, it is embarrassing. A 4.6-4.8 GHz clock speed is needed to equal the performance of i7 2600K.

They would have been better off just making a 4-core bulldozer with an integrated GF104 with the same transistor budget.

At least it would kick ass at folding.

power consumption isn't so awful here:

i'm guessing GF is going to keep doing respin after respin until they figure out wtf they're doing.
It's not terrible at stock, the alarming thing is how terrible it gets when you start to overclock. I'm sure this is the reason behind the delays, they had to increase clocks to keep the chip competitive but it took some time for GloFo's 32nm process to mature to the point that they could hit the clocks they needed and stay within a reasonable TDP envelope. Hopefully they can continue to improve the process and hit higher clocks, because BD desperately needs more speed to stay competitive. The max turbo especially needs to be much higher considering how underwhelming the IPC of this architecture is.

I kind of knew that OCd power consumption would be terrible when we learned that the 4-core BD had a 95W TDP. I was expecting it to be much lower than that, but since it is clocked pretty high, it makes sense that it would draw that much power.

They had to bring 10-20 new apps along the FX launch to show the performance of the new ISA's, now they look stupid with the older software every online site used in their reviews.

No upgrade for me this year. Gonna wait for PCIe 3.0, USB 3.0 to be more mass market (more mobos, cases, etc. to choose from), and to see how Intel reacts. Hopefully they will keep tick-tocking as if AMD had been competitive. In defense of Bulldozer though, it may be one of those architectures that generates a weak first product but gets better over several iterations. I'm not holding my breath, though.

The GTX 460 was a crap card, but at $100 it is actually still the best deal on the market. Get two of them and you are outperforming an FX 580, and with better power consumption.

The 460 used quite a bit less power than the 470, and when the 460 was overclocked it could match the performance of the 470 while still using less power. The idle consumption on the 460 was very good as well. It wasn't the most power efficient overall but brought a lot to the table.

And from a sales standpoint the 460 was a huge hit. It's #2 on the Steam survey under DX11 GPU's.
