Good riddance!

NDP Boot was true

I think he deserves respect for at least steering(as Finance Minister) the country from a Fiscal Crises.

if Canadian cons are anything like American cons.....you can kiss the budget curpluses you've been having goodbye.

Our cons are quite fiscally irresponsible.

Layton is speaking like he won the election...

*Newsflash* you got 1% more popular vote, get with the program; NDP never gets more than 18%.

So it is almost reversed compared to the previous Parliament. Almost, because the Liberals are having a better showing than the Conservatives in the last election. Despite Stunt's wet dreams, the Cons will not have a majority government

I wonder how long until that pompous *ss Layton brings this government down. His ego grows unabated, and if he think Georgie's (Bush) boy will give his constituents better deal than the Liberals, he's in for a rude surprise.

give him his due, he was a great finance minister
He was...
Horrid PM though...

thank's for that insightful analysis

The facts speak against him. He may have been part of "balancing" a budget, but as far as a leader, all he managed was a minority government which dithered, and tried to bribe everyone with their own money. As a PM Paul Martin failed and as such he is leaving the leadership position of the Liberal party. To his credit, he is maintaining the Liberals strength of keeping its leadership tightly run. They sacrifice personal ambition for the good of the party and he gives hope for a revived Liberal party, provided they come up with a strong replacement.

hehe, but he increased NDP seats by 50%(edit: previously stated "doubled" in error). So for the NDP he did win big time. The NDP knows it's place as never able to Govern, but able to influence Government. That influence is very strong, though it comes in spurts, but those spurts have changed Canada significantly over the decades.

I guess that's why they're forming the next government :disgust:

Best FM ever, too bad his PMship didn't work out. Can't say I'm surprised, I just thought he'd take a few months.

So, who are some of the potential leaders? There's talk of Ignatieff, but he's a big time rookie.

Ignatieff is sharp as a tack and a well thought out person, but his personality reminds me of Kerry. I don't know if he has the presence to win an election, but he might make a good PM.

That said, I haven't a clue who can replace Martin, nor do I know a Liberal I could vote for outside of Martin. As Finance Minister and as a PM, Martin moved the Liberals from Left of Centre to Right of Centre. I think the Liberals will likely move back to the Left without Martin at the helm. Certainly Manley will be back and wouldn't be surprised if whatshername tried another run at it.

I wish Martin would stay, but if he was going to step down, now is probably the best time. Since Harper has only a Minority government, it will fall in a relatively short time. The sooner the Liberals can select a Leader and give that Leader some experience in the role, the more likely they'll be ready for the next election.

yah it's in the national anthem...

Stop being a negative, do you think we should boo our troops in Afghanistan? Or that alienation of provinces (Quebec, Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia) is an acceptable platform for a national party? I think a lot of positive will result from this campaign. We have a PM commited to creating a more efficient government, which doesn't step on other levels of government's toes.

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!

From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

Nope...not there

I am not entirely downheartened, I just think we will regret this..nothing good has come under a conservative government (at least in recent memory) I might be proven wrong, and hope I am, and perhaps this will work, but I can see him flaunting a few Canadian traits, ideals to appease a few. Either way..we will see, hopefully I am wrong and this will work out for Canada.

Well...Conservative party...with the Bloc Québécois
We could get something good out of this...or another election in 1 year
Anyway, I'm happy since the Bloc won in Ahuntsic,no more liberals here for at least 1 year..I hope.
Election every year or so...not good for Canada.
