Wow, what a sad commentary on the state of modern affairs. This is a tech forum... your only instructions for IRC should be "come visit #atot on dalnet" no further instructions should be required..
Well I suppose dalnet is the newb irc network.
Haven't been on any in a while...
I used to have like 7 bots on efnet. You need to have them on several servers to maintain op through netsplits... It's harder for people to take over nowadays, but it still sucks to end up with no ops.
eggdrop bots are fun!
Then I created my own IRC server, and joined an IRC network that had a few thousand users...
My irc server is still up, and a few of my friends still use it....but I never log in.

For those of you that do not want to use mirc, or want to access the chat via a web page, you may use this:
http://www.sagalore.com/anandtech/irc
I'll try and tweak this later. It will automatically connect to a dal.net server and add you to #atot.
Keep in mind that pjirc is a java applet, but is still connects over port 6667/6668 - so your employer can see this in their logs...

dalnet is used because it's easy, we don't need a bot, etc, etc. On top of that, you cannot reg a channel on efnet.

You're reasons FOR using dalnet are included in the reasons others DONT use dalnet
Registering a channel or a nickname was viewed as a negative by the majority of IRCers

I view it as a positive so that people can reg there name and not have some jackass pretend to be them. IRC isn't our first identify, it's related to our AT identity, so it's important to most to not have someone dragging their name through the mud.
