I have questions about the lore if anyone can answer. I'm having trouble understanding the fundamental start where the Ghost raises the player from death. Ghosts are machines with AI, created by the Traveler to "seek out those who can wield its light as a weapon".
1. Why are the ghosts raising the dead? Do any living beings have the ability to become guardians without dying first? If machines can wield the Traveler's powers, why bother? The ghosts can open doors and repair derelict space craft that have been busted for a century. Couldn't they just build a new machine army and take it to the baddies? Better yet, they have the power to repair Exos; therefore, they have the knowledge to build more. Ghosts share the travelers knowledge; therefore, that knowledge can be shared. See #3.
2. I get that the traveler has power and has somehow imparted the ability to raise the dead onto machines (ghosts). I get that not all beings can become guardians, but if a ghost (a AI machine) has the power to raise the dead, why not just raise every dead person it comes across instead of just ones that can potentially become guardians. Also, how does it know who can become guardians if they are dead as doornails when it comes across them. Wouldn't it need to, you know, somehow detect life energy to make that call?
3. The Exo "began as self-aware war machines developed by humanity during the Golden Age...Exos are "so advanced that nothing short of a Ghost can understand their inner function." So let me get this straight, humans built, from the ground up, a self aware war machine. Yet this same society, having built those machines for a long forgotten war, lost the technological knowledge to even restore them to their original war machine status and must rely on ghosts? Even in a diminished state, in the many many years since the "long forgotten war", humanity should have at a minimum maintained their tech knowledge and even improved upon it. During the golden age the traveler taught "humanity new powers and mystical technologies". Even assuming those powers were forgotten when the traveler when away, the ghosts are specifically raising people who can wield those powers. The ghost already knows how to raise the dead. Wouldn't it be simpler to simply teach that power to the guardians and let them start raising people en-masse?
To be fair I have no problem with disbelief. I don't need to understand how the jump drives work or why the guardians are only ever needed within a very limited area within old Russia. It's like watching Moon with Sam Rockwell. That said, there are some serious logic issues with some things. Hmmmm.
