Here is what I have heard so far.

Leveling to 40 is quick with bounties and such. Your saved ones did not get reset so you can use those to help. You will find tons of blue and green engrams that are useful and stronger than your old legendary stuff. The speaker has a quest that rewards a year one exotic that you do not own currently.

Bungie has put in a new mechanic that walls you off from end game events. You need a certain amount of light to participate but every legendary from venders requires legendary marks. So far the only ways to obtain these that we know of is the daily and the lv41 playlist that asks for a light level of 260(which not surprisingly requires you to have legendary gear). The daily gives you 15 and you can only do it once per day per character. Today it is a rift pvp game you have to play. Win or lose you get 15 legendary marks. Here is where the wall comes in. The cheapest legendary is 75 marks including a ghost. Helmet is 120. They have 280 light which should be enough to get you into the playlist. Since you can only get 15 per day so far it will take 5 days to buy one piece of armor. That's 5 weeks for a full set excluding the helmet which is 120 and would take an extra few days. So let's say 6 weeks for a full legendary set of armor before you can grind the high level strike playlist to get more at a time. This in addition to the daily sometimes being a pvp game means some people will be stuck at around 230light and the play list is too hard for light level 230. This is depending on your luck when it comes to engram drops.

So thinking about buying those year 2 exotic upgrades for your year one version? Forget about it for a long time I think.

I have a friend who is already 260

banked a ton of crypatch and re bonus items as well as pup event things in the mail
parked all his reps just shy of leveling and got legendary from the packages

you can go 34-40 nearly instantly with bounties + banked things

Ok but for anyone who didn't cheat the system you're screwed when you get to 40 and finish the new storylines. In the past saving stuff didn't work so I'm sure a lot of people didn't do that.

I'm ok with it, the new story is good and I'm liking actually having to compare the stuff I find to what I'm using. Already got a few things that replaced lots of my gear. I really like that getting your new subclass is a quest with some story behind it and some of the weapon models are badass.

Question for anyone out there:

I'm a day 1 destiny player that hasn't played destiny since the day the first expansion was released. I'm all in with the taken king now and is it worth playing through with a new character or am I still just going to end up replaying the entire storyline anyway through bounties and nightfalls and stuff? I've got a level 29 Hunter, 25 Defender and wondering if I should play through as a warlock or just use the light thing to level him to level 25 instantly.

You can use the light to go directly to 25 and skip the content you already played. It's up to you what you want to do. The problem for me now is it's too difficult to keep up with multiple characters because of all the new gear for light level. I'm lv40 with light level 234 and I don't even have a full set of legendary yet. I'm still finding new items and dismantling old. Trying to do this across multiple characters is going to be ridiculous, at least for me.

I'd pick one main class for now and at least work on getting it leveled up and geared. Then you can share the weapons across characters to help out. You're going to want legendary marks for sure which are somewhat difficult to obtain. Anubis and I tried to do the daily heroic story and failed. We were close, but got overwhelmed by lv41 enemies on a mission that recommended light level 240(we were 230ish). There are very few ways to obtain legendary marks. Daily crucible and story 15 marks each, vanguard playlist(first 3 strikes give marks), and you get 3 from dismantling year 2 legendary items. Going forward that is the currency and it is shared across your characters. So if you build up a good amount on Titan, you can go on Hunter or Warlock and buy items.

this is from another friend of mine (the one i was talking to dredd about)

a far from impossible, I have 283 light - and that's about 10 lower than the turbo nerd average

heres the order of operations

1) do the quests that give 20-25 legendary marks; like the "set up patrol beacons on the ship" one, there's I believe 3 of these you get right off the bat

2) daily pvp/story - 30 marks

3) if you are less than 250 light, do pvp and get 250-270 light weapons and armor, played like 5 games for shits to test out the hammer and got tons of gear like that

4) at 250, do heroics, 3 guaranteed purple engrams and 30 marks and possibly more purples from random drops (i found none, friend got 2) there is also a quest tied into this that will give you a 280 weapon as reward with 20 legendary marks

5) you should be able to buy a pair of boots/legs/chest from a vendor

6) with good rng you should have another 75 to spare, buy a ghost shell

7) 2 manned nightfall with a friend at 270 light, got a 290 purple helmet - there is also a quest that rewards a 300 attack fusion rifle or shotgun along with another 25 marks

I played for about 8 hours from 2am-10am and 7 pm to 2 am today; so that's about 15 hours to be raid ready - spread out across 3-4 days this is perfectly reasonable. Don't forget that it doesn't have to be a purple, I have blues that are 280+ light

raid will probably have to be pushed back to saturday to give people an extra night which is fine, I might tag along with some other friends for the first couple bosses but either way going to do the whole thing at some point with SF bros.

THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER IS TO NOT FUCK AROUND WITH "OH HEY LEtS GO EXPLORE THE DREADNAUGHT FOR SECRETS GAIS" court of oryx is fine IF YOU HAVE AT LEAST THREE FUCKING SEALS to get the better rewards. make sure you bring at least 1 other person who has a mic and a fucking brain otherwise pub shitlords will just not do the fight correctly and run the timer out

As for exotics melb, they are super cost inefficient in terms of getting your light up. There's also literally zero good year 1 weapons for PvE, if you find yourself close to 280 and have a primary weapon you don't like aim for the scout rifle from dead orbit (vision of confluence clone) or the handcannon from fwc (basically a fatebringer) though I would not recommend HCs for pve right now, the first random purple I found was a HC and it felt like I had to present myself to 50 pissed off taken to even have a chance to land headshots with their fucking awful cof

I need to know what quests give marks for sure. That will help tremendously. Though like Anubis said to me it might be worth waiting to see what xur is selling before burning marks on other stuff from venders. Just in case there is a 280 item he has that can compliment your set.

I really don't like pvp but it seems like that's my best bet to get some starter stuff to bring me up to 250 so I can start doing strikes. I am simply unable to grind all day. I gotta work lol.

yea

I think I did 3 more games after you left last night for gunsmith things, I got some more strange coins and such but a cpl people got legendary weps/engrams just for being there

doing the daily PVP for free marks is easy and takes 10 min, if you wanna grind it out I suggest playing Control as its generally the easiest to manage if you don't know the maps or don't PVP often

Guys, I have a stupid question. I don't have the game but I want to get it after hearing about how its content is much better now after The Taken King has come out. My question is: do I have to play through a bunch of awful content before I get to good content or will all the content be good from the start? Ie - is the new content only available in expansion areas and I still have to complete everything in the base game first and those missions/quests are still the same as when the game first came out.

If you buy the $60 edition you should get an item called spark of light that brings you to level 25 instantly once you get past the opening sequence of the game and get to the tower. You can then skip everything up to the taken King. It will even give you some starter gear for level 25 as well I hear.

But note that some strikes and events require you to play through the story to unlock. So for nightfall if it rotates to one you did not unlock you can't enter as fire team leader.

So it sounds like vanilla will still be the same and available to play through if I wanted. Is it worth it? Would I miss out on any fundamental game dynamics that I couldn't pick up just by leveling up to 25 instantly and starting from there?

Maybe but the starter missions have you learn to aim and shoot, duck, jump etc.

It may be worth playing through the story at some point, really only a few hours because you do get experience from it which you will want for leveling your subclass.

Not sure about Xbox, but if you're on PlayStation, then download the demo and try that. It's basically the first part of the story on earth so it will give you an idea of what you'd be in for. It caps you at level 7, although you can continue to play (or role a new character).

It's what I did when year 2 patch came out and was my first time playing it since beta (sadly on ps3 which was horrid). Really got into it this time and my disc arrives today. Was waiting to see how this expansion shakes out, and seems worth it. Personally I'm going to be going through it from the start to the end. I know it could get a bit grindy or lonely, but I've no current friends playing so I've no rush to get to new stuff. Besides I don't really understand what strikes, nightfalls, dailies, etc are yet.

FYI, not sure if its for everyone but I got a $9 discount on Amazon for having prime when I bought it.

So do your gunsmith things, I hit rank 2 this morning, dude gave me a 260 damage scout rifle also once you get rank 1 you get armor orders or some crap that give you free weapons ever week, I have one of each type that I can redeem next week for free purples,

also this has been confirmed - when opening engrams have the gear that gives you THE MOST LIGHT equipped and open engrams 1 at a time, check each one to see if its better, if it is equip it and then open another engram

the level of the item you get from the engram is dependent on the level of light you currently have

That's where bungie screwed up this system. Some of the stuff that has the most light that I have are garbage weapons so I don't run around with them. Now I gotta remember to actually change and check engrams one at a time. Man that's stupid, at least I have 106 marks now.

I like getting stuff that is useful as I go but to have to remember to change gear all the time when checking engrams because the game won't give you anything you can use otherwise is pretty lame. It's no wonder that a lot of my friends and people on other forums are asking why they can't find gear that is better than what they have.

Oh and I dismantled this yesterday.

also you can infuse gear even if its not for your class

so if your on your warlock you can infuse a titan item to upgrade your lock stuff

not sure if that works with exotics tho

some good info

So, since launch, I think I've put at least 40 hours of playtime in. I'm not even kidding. I've been snared by TTK. It's everything I've always wanted Destiny to be. (sidebar - Echo of Oryx is an asshole)
A few tips to get as much light before tomorrow's Raid release as possible.
  1. Quests give a lot of great rewards, including legendaries and marks. Keep after those quests, you'll get given great gear for just doing content.
  2. Don't be afraid to keep blue items. They may not have as good of perks, and don't have the stat boosts or boost perks that legendaries have, but don't shy away from them. Light is the most important thing this week. Get yourself up there.
  3. Regardless of what gear you typically use, MAKE SURE you're equipping your highest light gear possible when turning in engrams or completing quests. Ratings on the gear you receive (from engrams for sure, quests I'm not certain) is based on your current light level. Sure, you're going to get junk too, but every so often you get a gem. I've seen blue gear as high as 296.
  4. Early on, if you find a blue that has higher light than the legendary you're using, unless it's a weapon or armor piece you're ABSOLUTELY attached to, don't infuse and waste marks, swap out for the blue and dismantle for the marks. If you have motes, use them to level the gear first. You get 5 marks instead of 3 for a fully leveled legendary. You don't have to upgrade it, just level it with experience. For those of us around through Y1, this is a familiar concept.
  5. Don't waste marks purchasing vendor gear right now. First, wait for Xur to show up. You don't know what he's going to have. Don't kick yourself in the teeth by wasting precious marks on something you're going to have to replace.
  6. Infusion, when you're capable of it marks wise, doesn't require armor for the same class, only a higher rating and of the same slot. Xur selling an exotic 290 helmet for Warlock and you play a Hunter lucky enough to have a 280 Legendary helmet? Have spare coins? Of course you do. Buy that mofo and infuse it into your legendary helmet. Or, buy that shit and save it for later. You're going to have it in your kiosk for later purchase as well, so don't worry. I think most of us are focusing on our main currently still anyway.
  7. Don't get too wrapped up in trying to force yourself into content that you're not leveled for. We all know how frustrating it is right now to try to get into Heroic and Nightfall strikes. There's no more Radiant Light buff from completing the Nightfall, so it's just straight rewards now. With that said, don't be afraid to try content either. Get yourself some friends together and just go slow. You can do it if you're patient and marginally well equipped.
That's all I've got at 5am, but I'll update this later if this thread gains traction.
