It was bound to happen. I bet Gears of War's activity will double when Gears 2 is near release.

Ya know, I quit last week when the ladder reset (ya know, this is probably why the ladder reset, they knew they'd have a bunch of new people) but after watching the video I might make a new character and actually play through the game/watch all the vids and such just for fun. Anyone wanna join in??

One HUGE positive for Diablo 3, those bosses (especially the hell hound dude) are awesome. It was a bit ridiculous that all the huge bosses in Diablo 2 would stand right next to you and shoot fire and such. When it grapped that girl barbarian and ripped her head off with its teeth I gave a silent "HOLY CRAP!" in my chair. Can't wait to see what Diablo will do to people Although I can already imagine people complaining about "why did it pick ME to decapitate!"

As was stated in one of the dev panels, they've worked a lot on death animations. I would imagine that barb was already dead or that hit would have killed them. Essentially it's a custom animation for dying to that boss instead of just slumping over.

Surely there must be a way to perform a 1 for 1 comparison? I am not certain how hackers try to get around such things so I could be mistaken. Of course, I will not be too upset if they just make us create a private room to play alone.

It's impossible, think about it. For an offline/online character to work, the online database has to accept changes to the character file and assume they occurred during normal offline play. All I have to tell it is that my level 1 guy is now level 80 and I found xyz armor in single player and it has to assume it to be true. The only thing it could possibly due is estimate time and say that isn't possible based on the time this occurred in, but then you get in ugly scenarios where you punish people for being better than average, and plus that sounds pretty damn hard to code in the first place.

Reminds me of another game...

FATALITY!

You're probably right and I kinda knew that was the case even before I made that post. It's more of wish than a realistic demand. There is probably a good way to manage it client side, but most likely the juice isn't worth the squeeze. In any case, you will not see me complaining if they do not implement that feature.

Aah, haven't seen the dev panels. Still, I thought it was awesome. Adds alot of danger to the game as opposed to Diablo 2 where everyone surrounds a boss and hammers away. And the fact that the bad guys have more than one animation is a nice touch

based simply on past WoW expansion knowledge WOTLK will either be a Xmass 08 release or come out in Jan like TBC did

Think this has been covered - multiplayer is on Battle.Net, which is free. WoW has a fee because it requires a whole seperate system of dedicated servers with an entirely different structure. (and is online-ONLY.)

No way in hell they would make it vista only.

Yea it would be very unlikely especially since they have announced the game will be released simultaneously on PC and Mac.

Mac support means they are already writing a 2nd graphics codepath other than DirectX10. Then the only question becomes where they want to set the minimum system requirements; by 2010, DX9-generation cards should be mostly gone... but you never know. Blizzard in particular tends to support older hardware than most other vendors.

They stated in an interview that it wouldn't require dx10.

I know you just posted it, but here's proof for the non believers

Here's the Video at about 4:10
When asked about DX10........ we will not require DX10 at this time and I don't think we will at any time

They need to roughen up the graphics a bit. It's just too clean and too color saturated. D2 had a pretty distinctive style which was rough and dark. But now its like there's rainbows and pretty colors everywhere instead of a world that's being taken over by Evil.

I think they could stand to darken things up a little bit, but keep in mind the areas they showed are pretty early in the game. Diablo 1 and 2 both had some bright areas (magma levels in D1, outdoor regions of act 1 and act 2 for D2). The most important part is that they make the last couple acts really dark. I'm assuming at some point we'll be descending into hell or the giant crater formed by the meteor ala FF7, and its critical that those set the appropriate tone. I don't really mind if the initial areas aren't as dreary, it will serve as a good contrast for later.

Looking at the concept art certainly shows the right atmosphere, it's just a matter of transferring that to the game itself. I think it's probably too early to make a judgment on the game's art direction at this point.

no way - D1 had the rough and dark style, D2 was rainbows by comparison. i much prefer D1 over D2... but D2 has way more replay value.

if D3 = D1 + D2... that would be a game i'd probably never stop playing

I do think Diablo 1 was a much darker and more roguelike Diablo game. And I do prefer it over Diablo 2. But at this point, and with the massive success that D2 got, I'd expect D3 to be much more similar to Diablo 2 than the original. The footage we've seen at this point sort of demonstrates that fact. While they show giant demons, even those do not look scary by comparison to the butcher. The biggest difference between D1 and D2 is that D1 was a game where you may or may not get powerful but the game actively wanted to kill you at all times. The series has moved from this, very roguelike sentiment, to the monty haul perspective, which is your character should become the god and the enemies should fear you. Monty haul is actually the original loot whoring term, but the end result is that your character gets massively powerful due to a constant stream of good items.

Played a bit of WoW last night and then went digging through my boxes for my D2 stuff. Found the original in one of the old style large boxes and then my copy of LOD, in the now standard small box still sealed shut.

Got it installed (fairly fast compared to current stuff) and then started a USEast char...only to get the message that server was down.

I agree, but it was less so with the original Diablo II.

When the expansion came out and especially starting from patch 1.10 (also 1.09) Assassins could Whirldwind, any classes could Teleport, Barbarians could have Paladin Auras and the Paladin could cast Battle Orders... I mean playing D2 doesn't feel unique as it did without the expansion. The influx of good items doesn't help, and the mega-powerful Runewords are just basically screwing everything, turning most Lvl 90+ characters into auto bots running Baal non-stop. I never finished the original Diablo, but I remember having a very hard time with it when I tried it, and I cannot recall ever finding any "awesome" item, contrary to Diablo II which happens roughly twice a week or so.

Basically, yes, Diablo was more challenging than Diablo II, but Diablo II was also more challenging than Lord of Destruction. I hope that Diablo III's general atmosphere and chosen colors palette won't reflect its challenge, because we'll have DII all over again with polygons and physics this time around. I am going to buy D3, but I'm honestly not over-hyped for it, I believe "it's cool", you know, it's getting to be released, well, nice, but nothing more, let's wait, then buy, then play, and then judge, for now I'm still busy with TF2 and M2:TW.
