PS: got a legendary out of a barrel. SMASH THOSE BARRELS, PEOPLE!

Same here. I got a legendary axe on normal. I checked the auctions and the cheapest buyout for a similar was 10K so I put a buyout for it for $8.5k and it sold within 10 minutes. Honestly, I didn't think it was much if any better than some of the rares going around 2-3k. I'm now about halfway to the 100k needed for a new tab.

Finally got through Act II. It's definitely getting better. Too many characters and trying to coordinate schedules with my friends so I keep jumping in different games and playing with people that aren't as far along. For the record, that's each class level 15+ 3 still in Act 1

While I agree with some of the complaints, to me, it FEELS like a Diablo game, and that's important. Everyone's complaining about version 1.0. There will undoubtedly be fixes/tweaks that are going to be patches to address some of the glaring issues.

WoW 1.0 is totally different than WoW 5.0. While I certainly know that Diablo 3 will not have the long term longevity (save for an expansion pack or 2), it will be on the radar for changes in the foreseeable future. I'm not worried. It's a great game already and I'm sure it will only get better.

Getting through act 1 on hell is considerably more difficult but also a hell of a lot more fun. I'm slowly figuring out how to handle elite packs with 3-4 abilities without dying, so far. The damage I take is absurd though. As a barb I have almost every health recovery option between bloodlust and my weapon I'm at over 5% vamp and still constantly flashing red when I get a pack of 3-4 mobs. I manage to survive but most of the time it's just barely...

Yeah, Hell is good fun so far. Just finished Act I. Ran into a yellow champ with minions of the type that:

1) make walls
2) shoot vaporizing purple lasers that kill me in about 2 ticks
3) immunity shields

Died about 8 times before resorting to the 'ol clear the rest of the dungeon out and kite them while lapping the place about five times, tactic.

Only lvl 40 in nightmare mode but I've accumulated about 2mil yesterday just buying low and selling high in the AH. You learn some pretty valuable information about what people like to buy and what it's worth for them.

Now I need a commodity to spend that gold on since I'm starting to think down the line, gold is going to be worthless once everyone hits 60 and have their pages of shared inventory bought out. I think gems will be a good hedge against rising prices.

That's what I'm afraid of... 2 million is a lot of gold now but I'm willing to bet a year from now, 2 million is a drop in the bucket. There's just not enough gold sinks in the game for the amount of gold that's being dropped. There has to be a use for it. In the real world you have to buy gas, food, pay rent, etc just to keep prices stable. Can you imagine in the real world you didn't have to pay for any of that and money just drops out of thin air?

If there's no purpose to gold and it keeps droping, prices will continue to rise for the stuff that people do need.

There's a key that allows you to ignore attacks, right? I think I saw it in the key bindings listed as "Move Only".

I ask because I encountered one of my biggest pet peeves in isometric point-and-click games... trying to move around large enemies. When I was fighting the end boss in Act IV, I had a lot of trouble moving out of AoE, because the boss was really big.

It's really not uncommon to hear me yell at my screen, "No! Stop fucking attacking!"

I was working an approach close to yours and the post above yours.
THEN I FOUND a +7 to life for each HIT.
WHAT? That was a pleasant surprise. Up till then it was +4 to life for kill. + 2EXP..... Per hit. Etc. This was like Christmas for this old man LOL.

Yep, I use both of those types. In fact, you can get both life stealing and life on hit on a weapon at the same time.

I think the latest weapons that I bought after I beat the game (for about 5k each... not bad) have both of them.

Part of me feels like the AH is cheating. When I played WOW we called it "twinking". Get my shawl and cane LOL. I hate seeing a toon, low level using stuff you KNOW he didnt earn or forge it.
It appears I need to LOSE that feeling.

I still feel kind of dirty buying gear in Diablo. I think it's because the entire point of Diablo is getting loot, and by circumventing the normal method of doing so, it kind of feels contradictory to the point of actually playing.

This is probably a dumb question but is there any way to filter auctions by the amount of time that's left on them?

It appears that the only sorting you can do is by buyout. I actually didn't think you could do any sorting, because I kept trying to sort by time left, but it didn't work.

Sorting by buyout is definitely really nice though, but make sure you shorten your level range, or else you'll run through too many pages of no buyouts. Although, it seems if you put in a max buyout, the game will not show any auctions that don't have a buyout.

How do you tell if an item has 'perfect stats' ?

I find a decent thing to look for is only a single primary stat. If you start getting multiple ones, then you're wasting item points on something that another class won't get much use out of. Note that Intellect = Resistanecs, Strength = Armor, and Dexterity = Dodge regardless of your class.

Then there are simply powerful stats that are helpful. At least as a melee, anything to help regen your life is nice. Also, "+x-y Damage" is probably the most powerful damage stat in the game. I think I mentioned this earlier, but I have a level 11 ring that I believe is "+2-4 Damage" and a ring with something around +30 Dexterity was considered a significant downgrade according to the tooltip.

EDIT:

i feel like a noob. what does kiting mean?

The other person didn't explicity mention this intrinsic part of kiting, but the idea of kiting is to avoid getting hit by your target while you gradually take their health down. That's why he mentioned the slowing effects as it makes it a lot easier to keep the guy away.

hit and run technique against bosses

hit, move away, hit, move away, normally using some slowing skill too to make it easier

Unfortunately the gameplay in Inferno is all about kiting and running past harder champions you don't have to kill. Melee characters can't tank for crap in Inferno.

When a skill says it does 125% of your weapon damage...is it 125% of the max damage, average damage, or 125% of whatever number it "rolls" between min and max for each shot?

And how is the DPS stat calculated anyway?

Im finding a lot of crossbows that have a huge range like 5-32, or small like 28-31. The ones with the wider range seem to have higher posted DPS, but that seems backwards...

That I knew, but I was figuring someone said that 'perfect stated' items exist somehow ... but I imagine they don't really, as each class would prefer something slightly different...str/dex on an item.

personally...

magic: vendor
rare: save for alts (if applicable) or attempt to sell on the AH once (and then vendor if it doesn't sell)
legendary: haven't found any yet

how many have people found? personally i have about 20hrs into the game and i found 1

its a helm - broken crown i think its called.

I know I have more hours than that, and I've only found 1. Forgot what its called, but its a chest piece that has int, vit, resist all, another resists (fire I think), another useless stat and a socket. Its only like lvl 36, but its still better than anything I've found or can get at a reasonable price on the AH for my 53 WD.

Right now the sweet spot is 1-5k depending on the piece. The ones that sell are the high stat items with +vit. Weapons are the cheapest, rings and ammys the most expensive.

I have not found any yet, I have played about 40 hours..brother found one from a barrel, buddy found one from a mob.

I also vendor my rares, they're pretty useless compared to equal level blues.

I started Hell yesterday on my 53 Wizard and it is insane! On normal I died maybe once, Nightmare a few times but Hell is a whole new level. There were four of us that died to a a pack of mobs ~10 times before finally getting them down.

For awhile I was really struggling in Hell. Changing my skill set helped a ton. I was using Disintegrate / Ray of Frost / Archon since they're amazing aoe / single target dmg but standing still + channeling resulted in either a ton of deaths or very little dps done since I was constantly having to move.

I switched to Arcane Missiles (Seeker) + Arcane Orb (Oblit). These with runspeed increase + Teleport + Blizzard + Energy Armor (Galvanizing Winds passive for health regen) have made me a kiting machine, while still being able to do decent dps. Any wizards struggling might want to try it out to see if it fits your playstyle.

On a side note, is there a way to move without having the risk of clicking on a mob and attacking it? When there are a ton of mobs and I'm trying to get away, I sometimes have a hard time of finding an open space to click on and move- instead I click on a mob which results in me standing still + casting a spell.

Also, I didn't play D1 or D2 and had some trouble finding this- Does Magic Find increase your chance of finding Rares and Legendaries too or just the normal blues? I assumed it worked on Rares + Legendaries but I've been running ~25% MF + getting the Shrine buff (another 25%) for rare/elite mobs and still don't usually see any Rares. A Monk friend of mine has literally 0 MF and tends to loot more Rares than I do ;( probably just poor luck but thought I would double-check. I tried googling and I keep finding forums posts of people saying "It works like it did in Diablo2", which doesnt help me since I didn't play Diablo2.

Increases your chance of finding any items above white, the more MF the higher chance for yellow and orange.

In coop games, your MF is shared, so you both have equal chance.

In general rares are only worth selling on the AH if they have a strong assortment of properties. A rare with crappy stats is just vendor fodder really.

Practically anything with high Str/Int/Dex are all good as long they're wearable by the appropriate class; even more attractive if they've got some Vit on them as well. For weapons almost anything with a high overall DPS number will sell, regardless of rarity. For armors, just look for high base armor + sockets + stats; any secondary stats are gravy.

That I knew, but I was figuring someone said that 'perfect stated' items exist somehow ... but I imagine they don't really, as each class would prefer something slightly different...str/dex on an item.

In theory there's a perfect version of unique and set items but not rares or magic items. Uniques and set items have a series of 'base' stats with random ranges and getting the max in those ranges would be "perfect"; however it also appears that many/all of them are also subject to having some random properties thrown on them which means that even a unique with the lowest base stats could be better than the same unique with the max base stats if the random properties were good enough.

The ones with the wider range seem to have higher posted DPS, but that seems backwards.

Skill multipliers I'm not sure of yet, but I would guess it's additive to your "main" stat. Meaning if you have 100 str on a barb and use a skill that gives you 150% weapon damage, I would -think- that means it's like having 250 str instead. But that definitely isn't official.

This probably isn't exactly right but I would guess DPS works like this; your 'base' DPS is the DPS on the weapon you're wearing (calculated by weapon damage range / weapon attack speed). That base number is then multiplied out based on a number of factors; your swing speed, your crit rate, your crit damage, your str/int/dex, passive skills, buffs, anything you can think of essentially.

However where it gets confusing is each of those individual factors are additive I believe. So if you have two items with +10% attack speed, that means your final attack speed is calculated by (base aspd) * 1.2, not (base aspd) * 1.1 * 1.1.

Essentially everything gets added up and then multiplied together.

As for the DPS on those crossbows, chances are the one with the higher range had more dex/crit damage/aspd to make up for the difference.

In coop games, your MF is shared, so you both have equal chance.

Hmm MF is shared? So if four people have 25%, your group has a 100%? Or whoever has the highest MF provides it to the whole group? Player one has 28% MF, so the whole group has 28%? Thanks!!
