Like why the heck did they tie damage (from spell or summonable) tied to DPS of the weapon in your hand? probably because they want you to buy better weapons in the AH?
In my view, the damage a wizard does with a spell, or a zombie dog does, should in no way reflect the weapon the toon has in their hand. A monk should still be formidable with nothing in his hands what so ever (and no equipment that Augments his abilities). Because he is a Monk.
The DPS for weapons is just plain ridiculous.
