Any reason to choose two handed weapons or dual wield over one handed + shield, as a barbarian? The DPS seems only to increase slightly.
I think what a lot of people don't realize is that the VAST majority of abilities are effected by the damage of the weapon itself, NOT your dps. When I say the damage, I mean the number that appears directly under the Damage Per Second when you hover over a weapon. Almost all casted abilities are affected by your attack speed as well.
To showcase the importance of understanding these concepts, lets look at a Wizard. This Wizard wants his primary damage ability to be Arcane Orb and wants to maximize its damage potential. He has a couple choices:
1h + Source for his offhand gives him 10k dps
2h gives him 9k dps
Many just assume the 1h + Source is his best option. But he forgot to look at a few things.
His 1h weapon has a damage rating of 200-300, with a base attack speed of 1.4.
His 2h weapon has a damage rating of 400-500 with a base attack speed of 1.0.
So what happens is hes casting his Arcane Orbs faster but they are actually hitting for less damage than they would with the 2h weapon, because your SPELL damage is not based on your dps, its actually based on that damage rating. The end result is get less overall damage from your Arcane Power pool using the higher dps combo than you would using the slower but heavier hitting 2h weapon.
**Please note the damage numbers are completely made up**
Thats just one scenario of course.
For a long time with my Wizard I was using Electrocute is a primary damage source, and since it costs no resources, attack speed and high dps were a good thing.
A Barbarian who is built around surviving based on stealing hp through Life on Hit modifiers wants the fastest weapon he can find, because the more often he hits the more he heals. Dual wielding is also much more attractive for Life on Hit builds because you can essentially double the amount of life you steal per hit (all your life on hit modifiers add together and apply to EACH strike, not just whichever weapon you hit with), and dual wielding gives an innate 15% attack speed bonus.
I'm not even going to bother going in to the details around the advantages of using shields vs offhands, I think most of that is pretty well understood.
But yes, there is a difference between 1h and 2h weapons, and its a lot more complicated than just which one gives you the bigger DPS number on your character sheet.
