If you are having to kite in act 1, you are NOT ready for act 2. You need to be able to stand toe to toe with every foe in act 1 before you stand a chance in act II. Despite what blizz says, there is a mostly required skill setup required to be successful as a barb.
Passive skills:
100% armor from vitality
25% bonus to armor
-20% damage from non physical attacks
+ crit/aspd/rage depending on weapon type. (choose this when you are surviving to add more damage in place of one of the armor stats)
Active skills:
Frenzy with +% damage rune
Revenge with % chance to proc rune
+Armor shout with +50% resists rune
Wrath of the Betrayer with +100% damage rune(WotB) This is how you kill elites quickly
-65% damage take with 20% lifesteal rune
For the last one you can pick things like
-20% damage taken shout, Leap with armor, whirlwind, +damage shout.
As you get stronger you can replace some of the defensive skills with more offensive ones.
Stats you need for act 1:
Armor: 6000 to 8000
Resist all: 500 to 700
Life on Hit: 500 to 1000
HP: 20000 to 30000
Damage: 10,000 to 15,000
For act II
Armor 8000 to 10,000
Resist all 700 to 900
Life on hit 1000 to 1500
HP 25000 to 30000
Damage 15,000 to 20000
All of these stats are after using your shouts and full frenzy stacks. You should never be kiting, but you will occasionally have to move to get out of desecration, fire, lazer beams of death, waiting for immunity to drop, etc. But you're not a DH constantly running away to avoid getting hit. You need to be more concerned with survival than DPS. If you can stand still and constantly hit mobs, then no matter what your DPS is you WILL kill them.
No, these stats do not require RMAH and millions of hours of farming. You can get a baseline set of gear on the AH pretty cheaply. 30 resist all per piece, some with str, some with vit. One thing is you NEED a shield. Pay attention to the block % as well as the block amount on the shield. You want around 18% block with 1500ish or so block amount. Most things in this game don't hit for a lot per shot, so the block amount doesn't need to be high, but you want to block often to give time for revenge to proc.
Holy crap; thanks. Yeah with full frenzy I'm doing 25k damage, but my resists are way below what you have there, and my armor is at the bottom range, same with the HP
Also, no use for cleave? Seems like no one uses it but I find it useful for mowing down packs all at once
edit: also "Revenge with % chance to proc rune" do you mean provocation rune?
